Rain washed out all 26 matches Wednesday in Rio so those players competition for gold this weekend will have to work extra hard in the coming days. And that includes Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard who won gold at 2008 Beijing has am ambitious schedule ahead of him, with 10 matches in four days if he wants to win gold in singles, doubles and mixed.

Nadal will start that journey Thursday with three matches all scheduled in one session during the make-up 26-match ticket.

With all players in action, Juan Martin del Potro returns as does defending gold medalist Andy Murray who meets Fabio Fognini.

Brazilian hope Thomaz Bellucci battled David Goffin.

The women will be headlined by new tournament favorites Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys along with Brit Johanna Konta and Petra Kvitova.

As it stands though subject to change, the men’s doubles gold medal match will be played Friday, the women’s singles gold on Saturday with the men’s singles, mixed and women’s doubles on Sunday.

The weather however still calls for some more showers Thursday in Rio.

50 Comments for Rain Washes Out Play At Rio Olympics; Rafael Nadal Faced With Winning 10 Matches In Four Days!

Colin Says:

In recent years more and more sporting events worldwide have been and still are affected by rain, so the present log-jam in Rio is yet another example of rushed building and inadequate planning.

Maybe there is something to be said for the suggestion that a permanent site for the Olympics be built in Greece, the country where it all began in ancient times. Properly planned, with international involvement, this could, as well as making at least some Olympic sports weather-proof, provide much-needed help for the shattered Greek economy. But of course, in the real world it won’t happen.

Margot Says:

That’s such a good idea Colin. As you say, would save billions and billions and would really help the struggling Greek economy.

BBB Says:

Agree, Colin – it’s distressing to think of the money that gets poured into these venues every four years.

Meanwhile, Keys has won again – less than an hour today. She’s really rising to the occasion here.

AndyMira Says:

Okie!!!Rafa’s backhand work wonders today..

Colin Says:

I hope Rafa doesn’t get to the final, because the way he’s playing today, he’d be beaten by any decent top tenner, which would hardly enhance his reputation. Simon is worse still.

skeezer Says:

Colin,
A recent HBO Real Sports special did an interesting piece on that very subject. After the investigation, it was surmised that the reason they keep shifting the venue around is $. Because they shift it around, countries are “bidding” for it, highest bidder mostly wins.
I think your idea is a great one, but pressure from the outside and a different money model needs to be injected into the IOC before that is gonna happen. IOC is a very strict piece of machinery. Another thing that was shared is that each athlete that gets a sponsorship ( you know those patches and logos the athletes will wear for $ ) well, a portion of those $ has to go to the IOC.

Okiegal Says:

Awww, c’mon Colin….Rafa’s reputation is already enhanced by having AndiMira, Willow and myself as avid faithful loving fans…..just saying…..and that’s no 🐂🐂!! 😀😀

BBB Says:

Rafa is not my #1 guy, but I have a huge amount of respect for what he’s doing right now.

Okiegal Says:

@AndiMira…..Well, you little smart thing, you called that one right…….No dips in play Rafa…..keep going strong! Good luck in dubs!!

Okiegal Says:

DelPo moved on too! Good for him. C’mon Andy! Fabio will not beat him….Andy in 2!!! Andy is looking so good. JK and Margot…..I will be cheering the Scot on. I really do like him…..anyone who would pose for the pix that are sent worldwide, has to be a fun loving guy……he’s got a great personality! Here we go….the coin toss! Fabio has shorter hair than the norm, and I like Andy with a shorter do too! GO ANDREW!!

Daniel Says:

Bellucci one set away from QF with Nadal, that could be a cracker for him. DelPo virtually on semis to face winner of Nadal Bellucci.

Can’t see Murray lising to neither Foggy nor Johnoson so he is also safe in semis to face Cilic or Kei.

Think it will be DelPo x Nadal and Murray x Kei. Good matches for semis, Gold and Bronze of these line up happens.

AndyMira Says:

That’s alright okie..Colin can think whatever he wants..IF Rafa fortunate enough to get to the final..it’s a bonus..this is his first tournament after all, rememberrrr?but we have to admit, today the ‘old disease’ of 2015 crept in back again…can’t hold his serve, nervous to close up the set but also there’s several positivity that he add to his game..he step up closer to the baseline whenever his opponent want to serve and attack his opponent second serve very aggressively and make several winners from that..Rafa of last year didn’t do that..he usually stand 4,5 meters behind the baseline and with that position it’s hard to dictate the game..also it means he’s lack of confidence and self belief but this new rafa not only full of confidence and self belief but his famous forehand and backhand also start working again and this new development that we should cherish okie because that means rafa is back little by little..

BBB Says:

Sorry, but no one is safe until they win the match they’re in. And even then they’re only safe until their next match.

AndyMira Says:

M,JK,RZ…don’t worry,agree with Okie..Andy will win in two..if not two..three that is..but win nonetheless..

AndyMira Says:

@BBB 12:13pm…i’m also have a huge amount of respect for you sis..thanks..

AndyMira Says:

@OKie 12:23pm..You said i’m cocky the other day..now you believe me??

AndyMira Says:

That’s alright Andy,win the 3rd set..you can do it!!C’mon!!

J-Kath Says:

Agree BBB:

And we are just witnessing what I anticipated. The fabulous Italian is almost a nemesis for Andy.

Humble Rafa Says:

The schedule here and the rain, and the crappy surface remind me of another crappy tournament in England.

Humble Rafa Says:

Benoit Paire has been expelled from France team for unspecified breaches of disciplinary code

He refused to abide by the team code #1 of promising to choke at every opportunity?

Okiegal Says:

@JK 1:50…….Rafa too…..FOCUS ANDY!

Yes, Mira I believe you but I still don’t like to get too cocky…..Sometimes being too cocky can come back to slap you in the face! I prefer the humble way…..But you’re your own person and you can say what you feel! You’re young full of spirit…..I’m old and pessimistic….

Andy, get a handle on this match! There are days when Fabio is a genius out there….this is one of those days. C’mon Andy you can do this!!

Markus Says:

Andy cannot put two good points together. He should lose. W

Markus Says:

Andy cannot put two good points together. He should lose. W

AndyMira Says:

@Okie 2:22pm..actually,it’s not cocky okie..it’s called BELIEVE..last year,we rafa fan don’t dare to believe..we just dare to HOPE..but seeing the new Rafa, make me dare to start believing again and we can’t be afraid to do that…and same with Andy now..he believe he can win, that’s why he can dig out from the hole that he’s sinked into for the past hour..i believe in him and i won’t stop doing that..

Margot Says:

Fatty foggy snatching defeat from the jaws of victory there, thank goodness! Sheer will power got Andy through, cos his tennis was pretty awful.
Aaaaaahhh…. shouts of “Andee, Andee” as he leaves the court being mobbed as he signs everything in sight. What a doll.

Margot Says:

And cheers to OK and AM for their kind thoughts and good wishes xx

Tennis Vagabond Says:

… just checking in to say, Humble, good stuff lately! But don’t let it go to your head.

AndyMira Says:

Of cozz M..if i didn’t say that,you wouldn’t want to be my guardian angel anymore!He he..kidding M…

J-Kath Says:

Being the only Scot currently posting (to my knowledge) – Was not impressed by Andy. Decided to wait to “see you all” at the US Grand Slam.

Good luck to your favourites.
K

Anto Says:

Yeah Rafa won the doubles match. Now atleast a sliver is guarenteed, Glad to see his dedication paying off.

Giles Says:

Yessssss! So far Silver for Rafa and Marc in the dubs.
Vamos!

jane Says:

what a comeback from rafa, esp given he says his wrist isn’t 100%

i have to say, though, i am very sad for vasek/daniel. :*(

jane Says:

it’s not just the poor and quick planning re: olympic venues (as colin talked about above)

it’s the fact that MILLIONS goes into that while the homeless people of a particular city stay homeless. apparently in rio there is even a wall built to hide the REALITY of the city. people say “what about the tourism money etc?” well that may be good for local businesses – i.e., the haves – but not so much the have nots.

just look

Humble Rafa Says:

Uncle Toni is mad at me for talking too much. I am going to rest.

Okiegal Says:

Rafa isn’t doing mixed dubs….this may be posted on another thread…..not sure. He would have to be worn out….so good decision imho.

BBB Says:

Okie, the commentators said that it wasn’t so much the playing time, but concerns about having it affect his recovery.

Van Persie Says:

Congrats to Romanians Mergea and Tecau for reaching the finals in doubles! Wow, they beat tbe Americans! Well done, boys!

Okiegal Says:

@BBB……He is still in the mix for Cincy, but I bet he pulls out….USO more important…imo….

Margot Says:

Wheeeee AM and OK, your man’s gonna get a medal!

AndyMira Says:

Wheeee M,JK,RZ…your man’s gonna get a medal as well!

AndyMira Says:

But M…i can’t help but feel sad because the other big two is not there atm..well..this is life i guess..everybody has their own shares to swallow..wish the best for the two of them..

Okiegal Says:

Thanks Margot for the wheeee……as AM said, your guy will too!! I can not believe how happy Rafa was with the dubs win…..the reaction was so neat. Does he love his homeland or what!! Marc was ecstatic. They will fight hard for the GOLD!! It was a great match….

Margot Says:

AndyMira @ 2.37
You have a very gentle heart.:)

AndyMira Says:

M..ha ha ha..you have no idea how gentle i am M..[i’m not a bragging type M] but i am a very gentle and soft person..whether in action or speak..and THANK YOUUUUU for the nice words M…..LOVE UUUUUU!!
