For the first time in tournament history, a fully day of play was washed out in Rome today. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Noami Osaka and my other were scheduled to play their first matches at the Italian Open, now they will be forced to not only play tomorrow, but also play their second match as well.

With a massive schedule today that included the return of Federer, tournament organizers doubled ticket prices which was met with widespread criticism. And the result: an historic washout!

chrisford1 Says:

Kyrgios on the loose!
Tennis needs a talented bad boy.
In a podcast, he makes some cutting remarks about Rafa, Uncle Toni, Andy Murray, and especially Novak Djokovic. Cutting, but also hilarious.

Van Persie Says:

Lol CF1,

Poor soul craving for attention and respect and love. A desperate cry for help.
Andy to go out with him and buy him a hot dog, maybe he will shut up :)

FedExpress Says:

You just cant take the choker out of Verdasco.

FedExpress Says:

Prince of clay falls at the first hurdle. Too hot and cold.

chrisford1 Says:

Hot Sauce does it again. 2-3 times a year he comes out of nowhere and plays up to the level of his own estimation of his abilities. Not to worry, Thiem will get there. He’s got the game, he’s got a great attitude.

VP – One thing I liked with Kyrgios is his colorful remarks. Often in Australian lingo. Sponsors like bland, fans don’t. Like now with labeling Rafa as “Ol’ Super Salty” (cranky, irritable). You know I am a big Djokovic fan, but I loved Nick laying into him about his “cringeworthy” new way of celebrating a victory, Novak’s “sick obsession with being loved”. And the highly quotable ” Personally…..I feel like he just wants to be liked so much that I just can’t stand him.”

Long day of tennis! Wish I could watch some, but business and making money intrudes….

Van Persie Says:

CF1,

still think, he is craving much more for attention while talking about his colleagues.
He is entitled to his opinions, but he should expext negative reactions as well. Bad part with him, he cannot be funny, as he is full of hate.

Looks like he is out now. He gave his best while talking about what he dislikes :)

Daniel Says:

Shocking loss for Thiem, But Nando is one of the worst you could play 2nd rd on clay, he may click out of nowhere.

Glad big 3 all won easily 1st matches losing few games, buzy day and they are all veterans who need the rest for next matches today.

DelPo also got a win, with cheering crowd behind him.

j-kath Says:

It’s the “veterans” who are most likely to win 2×3-setters as they have the highest training standards.

RZ Says:

Considering the schedule in Rome, losing early may be a blessing in disguise for Thiem. BTW, he wasn’t happy with how the tournament organizers handled the information to the players about scheduling yesterday. He used the word “pretty pissed.” It’s the first time I recall Thiem being pissed about anything.

FedExpress Says:

Wtf, Federer broken from 40-0 up vs Coric

FedExpress Says:

Federer double break down in no time

Daniel Says:

“Wtf, Federer broken from 40-0 up vs Coric” And than open 0-30 and couldn’t break back

Courts pretty shady, Fed old eyes can’t cope Lol

jatin Says:

Fed Express
Don’t worry, He is just getting started.
He will fight back.

jatin Says:

Coric is enjoying a fed like start.
Almost 4-0 in 15 minutes.
Its weird to see such scoreline in a fed match

jatin Says:

Hope, Fed holds here. Don’t want to see him getting baggled.

jatin Says:

Phew

FedExpress Says:

First game set the tune in the wrong direction for Fed.

FedExpress Says:

Amateur level of play by Fed. No good lengths in his ground strokes. Already under pressure when Coric returns. Too many UEs.

Coric has this truly in his hands.

jatin Says:

Trainer for fed, Oh

jatin Says:

Its blisters it seems.

FedExpress Says:

Has Fed injured his hand?

FedExpress Says:

Fed injured, annoyed and playing like a drunkard.

jatin Says:

Playing 2 matches in single day does not help either

FedExpress Says:

What a game. Saves 3 BPs and holds to lead 5-2.

jatin Says:

Even with all the drain and stiffness, Fed somehow leads 5-2 in the 2nd.

FedExpress Says:

What a waste. Gets broken when serving for it.

jatin Says:

Wins the 2nd set.
Kind of tells how difficult it is to straight set Fed even when he is playing in such levels.
Hope He can somehow maintain some of his level in the 3rd set.

EMILI Says:

How funny that the 3 Big play double on the same day!
So far, so good

As for Kyrgios, he may be a little ‘jealous’ but definately he is unhinged. No wonder he was disqualified.

Speaking of Nole, he would have been loved as much as Fed if he hadn’t been a Serb. (This was stated in the biography written by Chris B. who, by the way, also wrote a biography if Federer).

FedExpress Says:

3rd set TB

Coric has been the better player in this set.

EMILIA Says:

How funny – the Big 3 playing twice on the same day.
So far, so good.

As for Kyrgios, he may be a little jealous but is definately unhinged. No wonder he was disqualified.

Speaking of Nole, he would have been loved as much as Fed if he hadn’t been a Serb (as plainly stated by Chris Browers in a biography of Novak and by the way, he also wrote a biography on Federer).

FedExpress Says:

Madrid reloaded

skeezer Says:

Yo Fed, You da MAN!!

jatin Says:

WHAT A POINT. WHAT A MATCH
WHAT A FIGHTER FED IS.
Saved 2 match points.
Speechless.

Madmax Says:

Skeezer,

A double match on one day? Come on!

This was testing Fed to the max and against Coric who had every chance of taking it.

Our man did it. When you think Coric is 22 years old, we always say that Fed is the Daddy, but here, he kind of is.

Great match Fed. Keep on moving baby.

Madmax Says:

Jatin,

He did it. Again. Our man is the bizz.

Madmax Says:

Jatin,

He had to get that winning feeling back after missing out on the two match points he had in Madrid against Thiem.

Perfect symphony.

jatin Says:

Hi Madmax.
Great to see you.
Yes, it was great.
Remember he also saved 2 match points against Monfils.
This clay season is one heck of a rollercoaster.

Hope he will be well rested for tomorrow. Its already been an amazing result.

Daniel Says:

Awesome fight by Fed, next foggy or Tsisi. Kind of prefer Foggy at this point for Federer.

Nadal in statement mode here: 6-0, 6-1 earlier and now 6-1, 6-0. Onto QF to face Verdasco. Fedal on clay 1 round away, don’t even recall last time they played on clay, was it also Rome?

j-kath Says:

Yep – the superior dedicated-training of the “veterans” get the wins…..and long may it last.

Daniel Says:

Djoko 6-0 2nd set. This is shaping up for a Nadal x Djoko classic final. And if Djoko wins that beating Nadal, no one is stopping him for RG, 2 career Slam and 2nd Djoko Slam and rewriting history once again. He will be full of cofiden

To me he is in finals already, because DelPo may not be up there yet even with 2 wins today and neither Kei nor Swartz won’t beat Djoko in semis.

Noname Says:

Aussie hick Kyrgios is well & truly deranged! Blames Rafa for turning his (2.5) fans against him & Verdasco for not showing due respect. Huh, the irony! Respect is earned boi, not given! 12 years of highly revered ‘Aussie education’, the comedy just writes itself 😂 Now, back to your little village, mr. man!
