Happy 30th Birthday To Novak Djokovic!
by Tom Gainey | May 22nd, 2017, 9:05 am

Exactly a week after his friend and rival Andy Murray celebrated, Novak Djokovic joined the growing ranks of 30-somethings on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic becomes the 42nd player to hit 30 in the latest Top 100! And he makes the Top 5 all-30+, a first in ATP Rankings history.

Some wishes from his peers:

Djokovic also is going to be joined by Andre Agassi in Paris. Agassi won two Slams and was ranked No. 1 as a 30-year-old.

You pick a couple of players to root for and follow. After the fading out of Agassi, Haas who I really liked always injured and Safin going off the reservation – I picked Novak in 2007. Added Delpo a year later. Then Cilic And rooted for Milos starting in 2015.
I like the recent pics I made, starting with Novak. Cilic and Delpo had glorious times, and I think Raonic will get healthy and be a threat in the big events again.
But Djokovic exceeded my wildest expectations. So much of his career, he was the youngest player in the Top 5, sometimes the Top 10. The upstart battling two of the greatest ever. I got to watch him grow as a man and as a player and maybe the most amazing thing in his career is he got BETTER than Rafa and Fed in 2011 and dominated tennis until mid-2016.
In his mind, he was the upstart, and was shocked in 2015 when a reporter asked him what he thought of something going on as a veteran pro…”Veteran? Me?” Djokovic then paused a quarter of a minute, then told the reporter he was right, it was actually the first time he was framed as a vet player, and he had to think about it, and accepted the title. “I am a veteran, this is true. It just sounded odd at 1st..”
The teen and 20-ish guy who always played older foes in the semis and QFs and Finals. Then dominated the older guys. Then became a veteran. Then fell from the top. Now the teen with all those records wants to regroup at 30.

Happy 30th, Novak!
And there wasn’t much buzz about Andy reaching 30 a week ago, so happy 30th to the best player Britain has ever had. Andy id a champion, a true Big 4 comrade, and a Hall of Fame shoo-in.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

CF, that’s a beautiful telling of our experience watching Novak, from then till now, but you make it sound like a funeral!

Colin Says:

Another thing, CF – applause for correct spelling of “shoo-in”. So many people online write “shoe-in”, which makes no kind of sense.
