For the first time in seven years, Novak Djokovic will play a Wimbledon lead-up event. The former No. 1 has accepted a wildcard into next week’s Eastbourne event.

“This will be my first trip to Eastbourne, I have heard great things about the tournament,” Djokovic said. “I am looking forward to fine tuning my grass court game there ahead of Wimbledon.”

Now ranked No. 4, Djokovic has just one title on the year at Doha where he beat Andy Murray, and recently gave a flat performance in a loss to Dominic Thiem in the French Open quarterfinals.

Gael Monfils, John Isner and Feliciano Lopez are also in the tournament.

48 Comments for Novak Djokovic Takes Wildcard Into Eastbourne

Truthsquad Says:

Reading this article quickly, it took a moment to register, “now ranked #4, Djokovic..” How quickly fates can change in tennis!

James Says:

He lacks confidence. Not sure if this is a good move or just a move in desperation.

Willow Says:

If he does James, then all the more reason to get some grass court practice ….

Daniel Says:

If he wins 1 match he is guarantee second seed for Wimbledon based on Wimby seedings. He will surpass Nadal and even of Federer wins Halle he won’t be ablt to pass gim. This will have Fedal as #3 and 4 seed for Wimbledon with they only meeting in finals

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Being bankrupt doesn’t mean he is broke, it could be just a move to offload debts and unpaid tax, of course with a help of good accountant, I personally think he is far from broke.
This didn’t happened overnight, so Boris knows what he is doing.

J-Kath Says:

WogBoy:

Yes, in the pattern of Trump. But heck now-a-days Boris should be thinking of his reputation.

Willow Says:

If Novak has a good week at Eastbourne, that could put him back in the conversation for Wimbledon ,in 2014 he didnt win the AO but went on to win W that year, so maybe history repeats itself ?….

Mridul Says:

What if i tell you that the last 3 years, the French Open finalist has won Wimbledon.

skeezer Says:

@Daniel re:5:44 post.
As it should be.

Willow Says:

Mridul well thats fine by me, as long as that French Open finalist is Rafa not Stan, hope that trend continues ….

el_matador Says:

@mridul
very interesting..wouldn’t be too bad if the run continues..

lylenubbins Says:

I think it’s cool that he can drop to #4 so quickly, shows how great the competition is.

Daniel Says:

Willow,

He meant the runnuer up. Last 3 year the one who lost RG final went on to win wimbledon.

Skeeze,

Made a miss calculation. Actually Djoko has to reach semis. If he loses in QF he and Fed will habe excatly the same amount of points wimby seeding wise: 7395. Don’t know the criteria for a tie

Willow Says:

Daniel i know thats why i said as long as the FO finalist is Rafa , no harm or foul, maybe Stan completes his career GS and wins W :-) ….

RZ Says:

@Daniel – I read on Twitter that next week’s tournaments aren’t counted toward the seedings, which makes sense considering that they need to finalize the seeds and pull the draw next week.

According to Stuart Fraser, Djokovic will be #2 seed, and Fed will be #3 or #4. https://twitter.com/stu_fraser/status/877181023498498049

RZ Says:

Re: Boris and bankruptcy – there’s a joke in there somewhere about Boris not taking payment for coaching Djokovic.

Willow Says:

^Or being screwed quite literally for the indiscretion in the broom cupboard (ahem) ^ ….

RZ Says:

@Willow – ouch!

Daniel Says:

That´s right RZ, the week before a tournament never counts for rankings, my bad.

So if Fed wins Halle he will be #2 seed.

Btw, he is winning in Halle in a flawless match, lost only 6 points on first serve and never face a BP. Looking good.

Okiegal Says:

Who’s going to win Queens? Halle is definitely gonna be owned by Federer……Deliciano

Okiegal Says:

Oops….Deliciano is looking good. Wonder if Judy will be for him since Andy is out. I’m pulling for the other Spaniard in my life!! HUBBA HUBBA!!

Willow Says:

Okie prefer Chardy looks wise if im honest, anyway both Querry and Cilic both looked good in their matches ….

Willow Says:

David Beckham is watching at Queens, never really seen what all the fuss is with him if im honest ….

Giles Says:

I thought Agassi wasn’t going to take payment for coaching joker. Had no idea that it applied to Boris as well!! Surely not!!
Suddenly coaches being charitable towards joker. Why? Is he going bankrupt as well?

Okiegal Says:

@Willow👁👁 exam and 👓 for you my dear!!! Lol

chrisford1 Says:

A great deal for Eastbourne. Djokovic said he wouldn’t ask for an appearance fee. Though I imagine his being there will sell a lot less tickets than had the Novak of a year ago, who had just completed a non-calendar Grand Slam, said he was coming.

Danica Says:

Okie,

I watched a bit of the match between Feliciano and Chardy , and I must say that I am with Willow on that one. Prefer (contrary to my teenage self) dark haired, handsome guys ;)

RZ,

Boris was paid for coaching Nole. It’s Agassi that doesn’t want to get paid.

Willow Says:

Okie when i say Cilic and Querry looked good in their matches, what i meant was that they are both playing good tennis, dont like Cilic yuck, but Sams a nice guy but not into his looks, Feli is nice looking, but i prefer Chardy whos more ruggedly handsome IMO, as for Beckham i know many women who go absolutely crazy about him, but i have to say i never saw all the fuss about him, as footballers go i much prefered Thierry Henry or Freddie Lundberg both are deliciuos ….

Willow Says:

Danica thanks team Chardy ;-) ….

J-Kath Says:

Okiegal: Love your picturesque suggestion to Willow.

Queens: Was impressed by Medvedev yesterday – got a 50-50 chance of winning. (Was also impressed by the 18 year old Canadian Denis – he is definitely a budding top star).

Willow Says:

J-Kath me too lol ….

Wog Boy Says:

The mortgage in question was taken in 2015, Boris was already Nole’s coach for the two years, he was obviously paid handsomely otherwise he wouldn’t take the mortgage, where on earth anybody got idea he was working for a free?!
It is really strange to declare somebody bankrupt only two years after taking mortgage without giving him more time to pay it off or to make an agreement with lender. Something is very dodgy in all of this, particularly since Boris offered it to pay in total within a month.
I don’t think Boris is going to lose any sleep over this;)

Margot Says:

Okgiel: You’re gonna be very jealous..saw Deliciano up close and very personal on the practise court….😍😎💓 practising with other Lopez, his dub partner.
Raonic and Gorgeous Grig in the house too, as well as Meledev and Benny and RV.
Johnson put up a good fight and thankfully so much cooler.😎🙋

Okiegal Says:

@Margot……WOWZER!! Yes……very jealous! He’s playing very well too! Did you see Judy lurking about?? Lol He goes rhrough many hairstyles…….sporting a longer unkempt look at the present……but I managed to get past it!! Lol Hope you are having a good time and I’m .so sorry Andy failed to deliver………on to WIMBY!! 🤠🤠🤠

J-Kath Says:

Willow: Re. your comment on Boris at 12.40pm:

It was only cupboard love, me dear …. Ahem, ahem.

chrisford1 Says:

Judge said Becker has his head stuck in the sand and no more delays..He has had financial difficulties in Germany, Spain as well.
He may be using the ploy of trying to get his creditors to settle for something before he bankrupts and debt is wiped after what assets the UK court can get to are liquidated. He is a poker player and has had gamesmanship for years with his Spanish villa’s many creditors.

Willow Says:

J-Kath lol, the most expensive few seconds in BBs life :-) ….

RZ Says:

@Danica – I was making a (admittedly not very good) joke about Boris not being paid as the reason for his bankruptcy. I know it wasn’t lack of payment by Djokovic.

RZ Says:

@Margot and Okie – I’ve seen Feli up close too. Hard to believe but he looks even more gorgeous in person.

@Willow – I posted this story re: Chardy a few months ago, but will tell the brief version again. I stalked him for about 5-10 minutes at Indian Wells last year. My friend and I saw him walking around the grounds and both thought “there’s that French player.” We both blanked on his name so we decided to follow him to see if we could see his player ID that he was wearing around his neck. He went into a sunglasses stall, so we went in too and I pretended to try on sunglasses for a couple of minutes until I saw his credential. We stopped the stalking after that.

Margot Says:

Okgiel: Indeed I did see Judy…hmmm😆💘

Okiegal Says:

Oh Margot………. Was she stalking Feli?? I would have been! Lol

@RZ……More gorgeous in person?? WOWZER be still my heart ❤️❤️❤️ Thump thump thump…… lol!

Nitesh Says:

I have a feeling that Novak will be back come Wimbledon.

Miles Says:

Nitesh – that’s possible, but currently he doesn’t look anywhere near as good as he was 2 years ago.

chrisford1 Says:

A Djokovic photo with his son at the start of clay season I like reposted for anyone who hasn’t seen it before and would like it.

https://www.opptrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Djokovic-with-son.jpg

Giles Says:

Joker’s son is cute.

Nitesh Says:

Miles:

You never know what the future holds. Did you ever thought that Novak will to no. 4 in the world just a year after having won all the 4 slams one after the other. Did anyone ever thought that Murray would get to no1 in the rankings with Novak, Nadal and Federer around? Did anyone thought that Federer would win his 18th slam just after having a six month break from the sport? So you never know what will happen in the future. It’s just my gut feeling that Novak’s misery might turn around from here onwards. I might be wrong, but I wish that it becomes a reality. If that happens then what an epic season will it be.
