Former champion Andy Murray won his Shanghai Masters opener getting past qualifier Juan Ignacio Londero 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

“The court is by far the fastest conditions that I have played in since I came back,” said Murray. “I really struggled with that early on. I was mistiming the ball. I felt quite slow on the court, and he was pretty much dictating all of the points.

“I managed kind of early on in the second set to start putting a bit more on my ball, going for my shots a little bit more and just trying to hit through the court a bit more, get him on the defensive, which I did pretty well.”

It was Murray’s first 3-set win on tour during this singles comeback which began in Cincinnati and a good test for the hip.

“I think each week I have been feeling good, better. In the beginning I didn’t necessarily feel good. But last couple of weeks have been, I think, much improved,” Murray commented. “My movement overall has been very good in comparison to what it was over in the States, and I’m hoping that’s something that can get a little bit better.”

Murray returns Tuesday to face Fabio Fognini in the last match on Show Court 3. The Scot has won four of seven against Fognini who ousted Sam Querrey in straights on Monday.

“I have always had tough matches with him,” said Murray. “He’s not an easy guy to play against. Unbelievably talented guy. Good hand skills. Moves well. A little bit up and down sometimes in his matches, but he’s playing really well.”

No. 9 seed Gael Monfils was also a winner beating over Italian Lorenzo Sonego in three sets. Vasek Pospisil upset No. 14 seed Diego Schwartzman and Denis Shapovalov knocked out Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-2.

On Tuesday, the second round begins highlighted by Roger Federer. The 2-time champion will play his first official tournament match since injuring his back in a shock loss to Grigor Dimitrov at the US Open. But instead of Marin Cilic, Federer will battle Albert Ramos Vinolas who eliminated the struggling Croat on Monday.

Andrey Rublev battles Borna Coric and Daniil Medvedev, John Isner are on court in singles while Novak Djokovic is in doubles action.

Good man Murray ….

RZ Says:

Yay Andy! Hopefully these 3-set victories will soon become straight set victories

skeezer Says:

Great start for Fed. Nice to see him in action again. Meanwhile, Murray just split sets with Foggy…

Daniel Says:

Damm, Murray getting broken serving for the match 6-5 30-30. He needs this win!

Daniel Says:

At least Murray is competitive again. This is a positive and he is getting matches. But its a frustration being in a postion to win it against a top 12 player

RZ Says:

Ugh, I already hate it enough when Andy loses, but it’s worse when he loses a match he should have won, and to a guy who’s a jerk too.

j-kath Says:

Fognini has always been a bit of a challenge for Andy….so, relatively speaking, given Andy took him to the tie-break – I’m OK with Andy’s performance……for the moment.

Andy Mira Says:

Yeah gals!…I also really thought that Andy got Fognini yesterday…disappointed yeah!…but like JK,i am very happy with Andy’s perfomance these past 2 weeks…Ol’ Andy is almost back!…Yes!!…God!…really missed his amazing trademark passing shots!I almost in tears 2 be able 2 c he did that again yesterday!

But,gotta admit a little bit surprised Andy didn’t mixed it up his game a little bit more with drop shots,or use DTL FH/BH more often..the rare time he use it,he was successful..FH DTL i meant…I’m pretty sure Andy & his team will work on a few things going to the new season next year…It will not be easy to change things, but he’ll get there (insyaallah)…with his new hip & age,he has no choice but to be aggressive….Can’t wait to c his improvement next season & forward!….C’mon Andy!!
