Unvaxxed Novak Djokovic Gets Medical Exemption To Play Australian Open
Novak Djokovic will be defending his Australian Open. The World No. 1 confirmed earlier today that he received clearance from the Australian government to play the Australian Open.
“I’ve spent fantastic quality time with loved ones over break & today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission. Let’s go 2022!” Djokovic posted on twitter.
With nearly everyone already in Australia, Djokovic was among the last holdouts as he waited on his status.
Unvaxxed players, as Djokovic is thought to be, needed a medical exemption to participate in the event, and the tournament confirmed that Djokovic finally got hit — other players have also received medical exemptions.
According to the tournament, the exemption requests are reviewed by an independent medical panel who do not know the name of the applicant.
“Djokovic applied for a medical exemption which was granted following a rigorous review process involving two separate independent panels of medical experts,” the tournament said in a statement. “One of those was the Independent Medical Exemption Review Panel appointed by the Victorian Department of Health. They assessed all applications to see if they met the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation guidelines.”
In a statement, the goverment of Victoria — the state is home to Melbourne — released a statement as well: “Any player who is granted a medical exemption will have gone through a two-stage, independent process to verify they have a genuine medical condition that meets the criteria for an exemption.”
But what is Djokovic’s medical condition that gave him the exemption?
As Djokovic heads to Australia, the debate will rage as to how he got in. But he will be there, trying to win a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam and 10th Australian Open title.
