Alcaraz, Zverev, Muguruza, Gauff Headline Day 1 At 2022 French Open
The French Open kicks off Sunday in Paris with a big line up featuring the new phenom Carlos Alcaraz, 2021 semifinal Alexander Zverev, former champion Garbine Muguruza and 18-year-old Coco Gauff.
Madrid winner and Rome finalist Ons Jabeur opens play on Chatrier against the veteran from Poland Magda Linette. After he play this spring, Jabeur, who lost to Gauff last year, is among the favorites.
“It’s nice to be here. I love playing in Paris, I love playing on this kind of clay. Hopefully continuing with the great results,” said Jabeur who won the 2011 French Open juniors.
“My main goal is to be in the second week, for sure. I will be happy if I make it to the semifinals,” she added. “I always said it from the beginning of the season that I’m going for three things: I want to be top five; I want to win more titles, and I want to win a Grand Slam. I’m getting there in all those three,”
Semifinalist from a year ago Maria Sakkari and US Open semifinal Felix Auger-Aliassime precede Alcaraz’s Chatrier debut against the lucky loser from Argentine Juan Iganacio Londero who made the fourth round in Paris a few years ago.
Alcaraz was a qualifier one year ago and now is picked by some to following in Nadal’s footsteps and win the French Open at age 19.
Americans Sloane Stephens and John Isner will run back-to-back on Lenglen before Zverev takes the court. And then US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez meets French 29-year-old Kristina Mladenovic.
With the top half men playing, that means Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will open their campaign on Monday.
Dominic Thiem, Muguruza and Gauff are out on Simone Matheiu. Thiem, a 2-time finalist, is 0-6 in his comeback thus far.
