Krejcikova Ends Swiatek’s Final Streak With Ostrava Title
Barbora Krejcikova snapped Iga Swiatek’s incredible final win streak rallying from a set down to stun the world No. 1 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3.
“It was a big match, I think, for both sides,” Krejcikova said after the 3 hour, 16 minute epic. “We played amazingly. We gave an amazing show to the fans, so I’m really happy with that and with the way I have performed. It’s always great to be a winner in your home country.
“It’s a huge victory,” she said. “It’s one of the one of the biggest match that I ever played. The atmosphere was just very energetic and very unbelievable for both sides. It’s really one of the top matches that I think I ever played in my life.”
Krejcikova collected her second straight title and fifth overall of her career.
Swiatek had won her last 10 WTA finals and all in straight sets. And early on against the fellow French champion, the Pole was in complete control up 5-1 in a blink.
The home favorite Krejcikova, who had won her last eight matches, would start to gather momentum to level.
Though she dropped the opener, Krejcikova continue to chip away in the second and took the breaker and then broke at love in the third and serve it out on her fifth match point.
“I was just telling myself to keep going,” added Krejcikova. “She’s a great champion. She’s a great player, so I was expecting that she’s not going to give it to me easy. So I was just like, ‘OK, keep going. It’s going to be fine. You’re going to you’re going to get your chance. You’re going to make it,’ so that was my inner voice.”
The Czech who won the 2021 French title had been struggling with her form. She hadn’t made even a tour semifinal since Sydney until her Tel Aviv run last week. And now she backs it up with another title.
“I had a really tough two weeks, but two very nice trophies at the end,” Krejcikova said. “My game is improving and I’m really happy with that. I’m working very hard every day to get better every single time. I’m just very happy that things are clicking together and improving and and I can play the biggest matches with the biggest players.”
