American has yet another young men’s star on the horizon, his name is Alex Michelsen. The 18-year-old Californian enjoyed a breakout week in Newport making it all the way to the final in just his second tour-level event.

Michelsen came up short in the final falling to French veteran Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-4.

The lefty Mannarino picked up his third career title, and that comes after struggling for years in Newport.

“It was a pleasure to play here this week in Newport another time,” Mannarino told the crowd. “I’ve been doing well this year. The past nine years I wasn’t doing great here, but it was always a pleasure to be back and I always enjoy it.”

After wins over Maxime Cressy and John Isner, Michelson couldn’t solve the Mannarino riddle. With his slices and off pace, the American couldn’t make much headway.

“You’re one of the best grass court players on tour. I think I saw you final Mallorca and you’re a really good player, all the best in the future,” Michelsen said on court. “I want to thank all the sponsors. This week was probably the best week of my life tennis-wise and you guys all made it happen, so it was pretty cool, thank you.”

Michelsen, who isn’t quite a power player in the true American mold, will see his ranking break the Top 140 at No. 139.
