Fritz Fights Off Vukic For First Atlanta Title
Taylor Fritz shook off two missed match points in the second to eventually take down Alexander Vukic 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 to win his first title in Atlanta.
“I just felt so at home and welcomed in Atlanta this week,” Fritz said to the ATP. “I’ve been coming back here for so many years, so I’m happy to finally get the title. All week, the support was amazing. I’m not from Atlanta, but it felt like I was because the support was just crazy all week long and it felt great.”
A former finalist in Atlanta in 2019 when he lost to another Australian, the top seeded Fritz was up a set and held two match points at 6-5 on Vukic’s serve in the second.
The Australian, playing in his first ATP final, came through winning the break to force a decider. Fritz wouldn’t get down breaking Vukic at 3-all in the third.
Fritz wins his sixth career title and second of the season after Delray Beach. Three of his six titles have come in the U.S. and four of them overall are at the 250 level like Atlanta.
Fritz has also now won his last five finals, all since the start of 2022 with Indian Wells where he stunned Rafael Nadal.
The 82nd-ranked Vukic enjoyed a career week upsetting three seeds including Christopher Eubanks, Ugo Humbert and Yoshihito Nishioka.
He’ll see his ranking vault up to a new career-high No. 62.
