Zverev Collects First Title Since Ankle Injury, Downs Djere In Hamburg
Alexander Zverev is back in the win column for the first time since his gruesome right ankle injury at the French Open last year.
Today, Zverev collect his home title at the ATP 500 level Hamburg event downing Laslo Djere 7-5, 6-3.
“At the end of the day, this is my home, this is where I grew up, and this where I started playing tennis,” Zverev said to the ATP. “It was incredible for me, incredibly emotional. I can’t describe it in words, I’m just super happy right now.”
It’s Zverev’s 20th career title, first since the 2021 ATP Finals. It’s also his seventh title on clay.
“It’s almost like a first again,” he said. “It’s such a long time, 18 months, and I’m just super happy right now.”
Zverev fought off break points in the ninth game of the first, then broke for 6-5 and served it out. And then Zverev need two breaks to put away the Serbian in the second.
Zverev dropped serve once and finished 3-of-4 on break chances.
Djere, just 1-of-5 on break chances, falls to 0-3 against Zverev. He was seeking his third career title.
The 19th-ranked Zverev will climb three spots to No. 16 as he continues he bid to get back to the Top 10. Zverev missed the remainder of the season after the French Open last year, so he will pick up points and ranking spots in a hurry.
