Nick Kyrgios Out Of The US Open With Wrist Injury
The first big name to drop out of the US Open was released yesterday by the tournament and that is Nick Kyrgios.
“Heartbroken about the US Open,” he wrote on Instagram. “My wrist is not ready to compete. But may I remind people that I have a protected ranking of 21 when I choose to be back I’ll be back where I belong.”
The Australian star has been battling left knee and wrist issues this season, and those injuries will have kept him out of all four Grand Slam events.
It’s the first time in his career that Kyrgios will miss all four Slams in a single season.
Kyrgios first injured his left knee at the start of the season, then underwent a minor surgery.
He returned on the grass months later but was still struggling with the knee, and then he tore a ligament in his wrist while training in Mallorca and it forced him out of Wimbledon where he had made the final a year earlier.
This is the first time Kyrgios has missed the US Open due to injury — he didn’t play in 2020 due to COVID. He made the quarterfinals there last year losing to Karen Khachanov. He was among the Top 10 favorites in the most recent US Open odds.
Kyrgios has played just one match this year losing to Yibing Wu in the first round at Stuttgart in June. The 28-year-old’s ranking is down to No. 92 but as he said, he does have a protected rank of No. 21.
The tournament also announced that German Jan-Lennard Struff has also withdrawn. The event begins on August 28 with the draw released in less than two weeks on August 24.
