Monfils Masters Kotov For Stockholm Title At Age 37
Gael Monfils showed age is just a number as the French veteran took home the Stockholm title defeating Pavel Kotov 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3.
The 37-year-old Monfils becomes the oldest winner at Stockholm. At age 26, Monfils won Stockholm back in 2011.
“Credit to Pavel,” Monfils said to the ATP. “He has had an unbelievable week and he was pushing me on the court. I ran a lot today. When I had to save break points in the second set, I tried to push through. I don’t know how I pulled up but I kept believing and fighting.”
Monfils totaled seven aces, donated eight doubles and was 4-of-9 on break chances.
Appearing in his first ATP final, the 24-year-old Kotov had two break chances in the second at 5-all. And then was two points from the match at 6-all in the second set breaker.
Monfils wins his 12th career title in his 34th final. It’s his first win (or final appearance) since Adelaide at the start of 2022.
