Iga Swiatek made the best of a bad situation in Cancun by destroying the field culminating today with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jessica Pegula to claim her first WTA Finals title and with it the year-end No. 1 ranking.

“Coming back to world number one, it’s a dream come true, for sure,” Swiatek said to the WTA after the 59-minute win. “I would say I wasn’t expecting that right now, this season. I was hoping that maybe next year is gonna be my year, but it seems like you know, just working hard and focusing on the right things at the end worked. So I’m really happy.”

Swiatek finished the much-maligned event 5-0 and 10-0 in sets dropping a record low of just 20 games against five Top 8 players. And she extended her current win streak to 11.

“I’m just really happy and super proud of myself,” Swiatek added. “This week has been not easy, but I feel like it’s a kind of a reflection of the whole season. So I’m just happy that I could cope with everything well, and I kind of used my experience from all these years to perform well here.”

Swiatek claims her 17th career title, finishes No. 1 for a second straight year. She improves to 6-3 against the American.

Pegula was appearing in her biggest career final. She was seeking an 8th overall title.

“She played really solid,” Pegula said. “I felt like she really was putting a lot of pressure on me. And I think I just was overplaying a lot today. I don’t know why. But it just was one of those days where I felt like I was going for too much.”
