2024 Tennis Season Opens Friday With United Cup: De Minaur v Norrie Headlines
Depending on where you are, it’s either opening day or opening night in a few hours for the 2024 pro tennis season.
After a full 12 days off, the pro tour gets revved up again for the United Cup which kicks off the new year.
The 18-team mixed event once against features some of the best players from both tours.
This year, the event will feature one men’s singles, one women’s singles and then a doubles if necessary to break the tie.
“The format is better,” Caroline Garcia said. “For the fans, last year was very tricky to understand. It’s easier now, and played in one day instead of two, so every match is important. The mixed doubles will finish the tie, and I think it’s a great way to finish it.”
The eighteen teams are divided into six groups of three, playing an 11-day tournament in Perth and Sydney. Teams in Sydney will play on outdoor hard courts. Perth will feature an indoor hard court.
The team event boasts none of the men’s top 20 – Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud and five of the world’s Top 10 women – Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Maria Sakkari and Marketa Vondrousova.
Djokovic will make his United Cup debut playing for Serbia Sunday in Perth.
For opening day, Australia and Alex De Minaur take on Great Britain and Cameron Norrie. Katie Boulter will also meet Ajla Tomljanovic.
Also, Brazil will collide with Spain.
The USA team are the defending champions. With a new calendar looming, this could be the final edition of the event.
