Spanish tennis great Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement from pro tennis yesterday.

“If 25 years ago, when I started hitting my first tennis balls someone had told me that I would become a professional tennis player, that I would fulfill my dream of winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon, that I would become No.1 in the world and win the WTA Finals,” she said at a press conference. “I would have thought this person was crazy.

“Tennis has given me a lot in this first part of my life. It has been a fantastic journey in which I have experienced unique situations. I have travelled all over the world and experienced many different cultures.

“I am tremendously grateful to all the people who have helped and accompanied me throughout this chapter, because without them I would not have been able to get here.

“I hope that my collaboration with Laureus Sport for Good is the beginning of many more projects in which I can dedicate myself and help young people through sport.”

Just 30, Muguruza began her career in 2008, and went on to reach world No. 1 in 2017 and won 10 career WTA title including two Grand Slams and three Masters.

Muguruza won her first Slam winning the 2016 French Open over Serena Williams. She then added a second taking the 2017 title over Venus Williams.

She also won the 2021 WTA Finals along with Masters titles at Beijing, Cincinnati and Dubai and made the finals at 2015 Wimbledon and 2020 Australia.

Muguruza finishes with a singles record of 449-238 (.654) and career prize money of $24,813,379 – 13th on the current all-time list.

Her final match was in Lyon in February of 2023.

With a No. 1 ranking and two Grand Slams, she will no doubt be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.

Shame she will be very much missed, beautiful lady inside and out, good luck with the next phase of your life, Garbine, and congratulations to you on an amazing career πŸ‘πŸŽŠ

It is hard for the sport that fan pressure for ‘proven stars’ to win and the social media and reg media hounding of them when they don’t actually gives players less motivation and love of the game in itself. “Win so we can love you again”, the people who don’t matter except as mass media audience or seat fillers – demand.

It makes certain top players tire of what has become a rat race, and doesn’t help them winback a loss of form. But in between her loss of forms, Muguruza is a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. She was golden from junior days up through 2021 with some valleys. Might have come back again and done top pro tennis well again, if she hadn’t lost her love of the game.

Celebrate and be happy for Garbine (aka Mugu) for the time when she was a star of the sport, grew into a true beauty, a star in media, and was like the 10th to 14th most marketable athlete in the world. Embraced by both Spain and her homeland Venezuela.
Massive sponsorship deals. Many things to keep her going outside tennis.
Congratulations Mugu! You’ll always be a bright light.
