Naomi Osaka won her first match as a mother Sunday at the French Open holding off Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the opening Chatrier match of the 2024 French Open.

Osaka led 4-0 in the third when the Italian Bronzetti made a feverish comeback winning five straight games. But Osaka rebounded winning the last three to earn his first French Open win in three years.

Osaka now could face Iga Swiatek on Wednesday if the Polish No. 1 takes care of business on Monday.

“This part of my journey, I’m not really comparing myself right now,” Osaka said. “Maybe later when I get more confident and towards the level that I want.”

“I’m honestly really excited,” she added. “I watched her a lot when I was pregnant. And honestly, I think it’s an honor to play her in the French Open, because she’s won more than once here, for sure. It’s like a very big honor and challenge for me.”

It was a mixed day for former champions. Jelena Ostapenko ousted the dangerous Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 7-5 while Barbora Krejicova remains winless in Paris after her 2021 triumph going down to Viktorija Golubic 7-6(3), 6-4.

French hope Caroline Garcia once again felt the pressure but rallied late behind her serve for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over 22-year-old Eva Lys of Germany. Garcia, a former French quarterfinalist, cracked 18 aces in the win.

Elsewhere, Marie Bouzkova upended the 29th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-4. The 18th-seeded Marta Kostyuk had to fight off Laura Pigossi 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4. Olga Danilovic of Serbia rolled by Italy’s Martina Trevisan 6-1, 6-2.

Australian Open semifinalist No. 30 Dayana Yastremska rallied past Ajla Tomljanovic in three 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and former finalist Sofia Kenin got the better of Germany’s Laura Siegemund in a match that went the distance 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
