2024 Wimbledon Men’s SF: Djokovic v Musetti, Alcaraz v Medvedev
The men’s semifinals take center stage today at Wimbledon. Three of the four semifinalists are back for another round as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are one win from a second straight meeting in the Wimbledon final.
Alcaraz is on first taking on Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of their semifinal last year. Alcaraz blew out Medvedev who was eaten up in that match by the Spaniard who took advantage of Medvedev’s deep court positioning.
“I’m going to say the most difficult thing about facing Daniil, or the most special thing about him, is he can reach every ball. Well, he is like a wall. Every ball bounce back,” Alcaraz said.
“I feel like I can hit an unbelievable shot, the ball is going to bounce back. Is difficult to play thinking about that. So I going to say that’s the most special thing about Daniil.”
Medvedev has never been to a Slam final other than hard court. Can he turn make the necessary adjustment?
“Just play better,” Medvedev said of what he needs to do better. “It’s always a question, did I serve not well enough or have Carlos been amazing on the return this day last year because he won? I have to serve better. That’s still the most important thing on grass. You serve aces, you serve on the line, you’re less in trouble, and you feel better. That’s where you can put pressure on his serve.
“Then he’s a tough player. He can hit strong. He can slice. He can dropshot. He can volley. He knows how to play tennis. Just need to be at my best, like kind of how I’ve been today, and try to win.”
Djokovic will be big the favorite against first-time Grand Slam semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti. The 22-year-old Italian has won over Djokovic on clay and taken four sets off Djokovic in two French Open matches, but this is grass and this is the semifinals.
“I played him many times in different stage, even big ones like of course two times in French Open. I beated him one time in Monte-Carlo. Then I lost all the others,” Musetti said. “I have to say with Nole, after the match I always finished with a lesson. Of course, the last match was really an intense match from both players and really stressful match.
“So what I have to say, against him you are probably more stressed because he’s probably the best player ever or one of the best players ever. You walk on court with a different mentality. As I said before, I think if I play in a certain way, I could have my shot in the next round.”
