Someone will their first Wimbledon title today. It will either go to Barbora Krejcikova or Jasmine Paolini in one of the most unlikely finals in recent Wimbledon memory.

Krejcikova comes in as a slight favorite having already collected a Grand Slam title at the 2021 French Open and adding seven doubles Slams including two Wimbledons. She’s a former No. 2 in singles, a former No. 1 in singles and while she’s the same age s her 28-year-old counterpart, she hasn the experience of winning on the biggest stages.

“I feel I had to improve everything,” Krejcikova said Thursday. “I think I definitely got better on faster surfaces. I feel like I had to develop my game because everybody else is developing their game, too.

“It’s great that it looks like I made some progress, that I’m in another final.”

Krejcikova also had injuries and illness this year.

“During the season it was very difficult. I have had many difficult periods. I mean, I never really imagined that in, yeah, four weeks I could reach a Wimbledon final, that I can be a different player,” Krejcikova said.

“But I’m super happy that I am, that I was able to fight through everything.”

Paolini has been the surprise breakout story of the 2024 Grand Slam tennis season winning more matches (15) at this level than anyone else. The tiny Italian made the fourth round in Australia and a month later sprouted to prominence winning the Dubai 1000 level event. She stunned the tennis world making it all the way to the French Open final and then backing it up at Wimbledon.

“I never played against Barbora, but she’s a Grand Slam champion,” Paolini said. “She play tennis unbelievable. I practice with her sometimes. Maybe I know a little bit more Elena because I played against her many times.

“It’s going to be a Wimbledon final, so it’s a different kind of match, I think. As I said, it’s always the same things the goal: to try to serve well today I didn’t, I have to say to try to return as many balls as possible, and to control the point.

“On the grass is tough to defend. So the goal Saturday will be that one for sure in terms of game, of the tactic.”
