2024 Wimbledon Men’s Final: Novak Djokovic v Carlos Alcaraz

The dream rematch final is set at Wimbledon between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic will seek revenge on the Spaniard for derailing his bid for a first Calendar Slam. Now he’ll try for a first time to win a record breaking 25th Grand Slam title and tie Roger Federer with eight on the grass. It’s his 10th Wimbledon final and 6th straight.

“Obviously I’m aware that Roger holds eight Wimbledons. I hold seven. History is on the line. Also, the 25th potential Grand Slam,” Djokovic said.

“Of course, it serves as a great motivation, but at the same time it’s also a lot of pressure and expectations. Every time I step out on the court now, even though I’m 37 and competing with the 21-year-olds, I still expect myself to win most of the matches, and people expect me to win, whatever, 99% of the matches that I play.”

Djokovic has been far from his best this year but just over a month after right knee surgery on June 5, the Serb is into his first final of 2024. Djokovic was the dominant force at Wimbledon until he ran into the Alcaraz buzzsaw last year. Alcaraz put an end to Djokovic’s 45-match win streak on Centre Court in a stunning 5-set win. But he insists the knee is now fine.

“Surreal in a way because it has always been a childhood favorite tournament, so I keep on repeating that,” Djokovic said. “I also remind myself not to take anything for granted, particularly when you are playing finals in the most important tennis tournament in the history of this sport.

“Coming into Wimbledon really before the tournament, I wasn’t sure until three, four days before the tournament whether I’m going to take part in it. Made an extra effort to recover as quickly as possible just because it was Wimbledon.

“So I’m really, really happy to make the finals because I was not thinking about, particularly in the first couple of matches, of the eventual title match. I was just thinking about moving well, not injuring myself, to be honest, and feeling more free so to say in my movement.”

Since the loss a year ago, Djokovic beat Alcaraz in an epic Cincinnati final and then again at the end of the year at the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz will try to stay perfect in Grand Slam finals and go to 2-0, and defend his first Slam. Just 21, he’ll try to win his fourth and complete the French-Wimbledon double.

“Obviously everybody knows Djokovic. He has played multiple Grand Slam final, have won a lot of them. Last year it was a really difficult match. He put me in a really trouble, I’m going to say.

“I know how it’s going to feel playing against Djokovic,” Alcaraz said. “I’ve played few times in Grand Slams, final of Master 1000, multiple times against him. I know what I have to do. I’m sure he knows what he has to do to beat me. It’s going to be a really interesting one if I’m going to play against Djokovic for sure. But I’m ready to take that challenge and I’m ready to do it well.”

It’s arguable that neither are at the level they were at last year. Djokovic hasn’t been as sharp and Alcaraz has played in patches. But the two return to the biggest stage with history on the line yet again.

Van Persie Says:

Congrats to Alcaraz, well deserved!

Congrats to Nole for making it to the finals, even given the circumstances🙂. Lots. of love to Nole❤️

Alison hodge Says:

Chanel slam, in the company of other all time greats, Roger, Rafa, Novak, Borg đź‘Śwell done Carlos

All Out Says:

Carlitos was exceptional today. Novak was a bit flat, but all things considering it was a really good tourney for the Serb. I think we are seeing the twilight years for Novak. His level is still better than most, but maybe not enough against the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz. The future of tennis is in good hands. Looking forward to the Alcaraz Sinner rivalry in the coming years. Vamos!!

Kimmi Says:

Got the game and mental part going! Great game from start to finish. Congrats Alcaraz.

Madmax Says:

Proud of Nole. Proud of the man who had surgery less than a month ago, who didn’t go on about it, these are the warriors of the game.

Giles do you not get enough attention at home? You seem a bit lost here at TX?

As for Carlos, I think it is safe to say that he played a blinder today. An absolute blinder. He has such a talent, but there is no one out there – perhaps Roger as he is so eloquent and perhaps Rafa, who is so humble, there is no one with the grace and humility that Novak has when he loses. Novak is such a sweetheart. I feel for him a lot right now, as here is another champion, perhaps heading towards the twilight of his career, perhaps another 5 years to go…but we must not forget what Novak has given to the sport and still is, so people like you Giles you just sound like a bad loser, someone who gloats and wishes bad on others. It’s not a good look, Giles. You might need a bit of deep therapy.

Novak has everything he could ever wish for, and he is still up there, he is the GOAT, for sure, he is such an intelligent man, an icon but it was clear today he had recovered fully from his knee surgery. You could see that, and the motivation a little was missing.

It was Carlos’ day, and it was great to see the match with Novak having the chance to the take the trophy, but he will be back I am sure of it.

Good luck to Novak.

Madmax Says:

sp. “Clear today he had *NOT* recovered fully from his knee surgery.

Alison hodge Says:

A good day for Spain in sports

zed Says:

The inevitable passing of the torch is happening as we all knew it must. Father Time always wins.

Carlos now with 4 Slams at such a young age, if he can avoid injury there is no telling what records he will break.

As far as I can tell, Novak still loves the game and he’s still reaching slam finals so he may not want to hang up the boots just yet but we are in the twilight years no matter what he decides.

What a career! 24 Slams, 428 weeks at number #1, how many ATP finals? How many Masters 1000’s? An unprecedented career in men’s tennis, no one (so far) can match these accomplishments.

When Novak retires he can do so in the full knowledge that he achieved more than any man before him, ever!

Madmax Says:

Zed,

Novak lost a match. That’s it. He has another few years left. The most elastic man on court. It was an off day.

This is Novak here – listen to what he says – pure class.

Madmax Says:

Novak has “no limitations in my mind”.

Of course!

Journalists can be so stupid with their questions sometimes.

zed Says:

Madmax, I hope you’re right, I would love to see Novak play for years yet, in fact I would love to see him take at least one more Grand Slam.

It’s going to get harder as time passes so he needs to win the next slam sooner rather than later. Maybe the US Open, who knows.

Giles Says:

“Novak has “no limitations in my mind”! Delusional much.

Madmax Says:

Giles,

We all know that you need attention at home. We know how much you enjoy watching Novak because how could you not?

I often wonder Giles whether I should just ignore you but then I think you would be lost, so really, it would be so good if you saw Novak for the class act that he is. Two things, but I will address this to Zed.

Zed,

Hopefully you can see this link. Firstly, Novak’s speech to his family. Super super cute, Zed and Stefan, loving tennis and so proud of his dad. It’s a beautiful moment.

Then

Carlos acknowledging how difficult it must have been for Novak to even play tennis after 4 weeks of surgery, therapy and recovery, THEN training and so to even make the final, it’s unbelievable Zed and very underrated. I think that Carlos at 21 years of age – he said he was nervous – but this is a good guy, a respectful guy towards Novak.

I like him Zed, he appreciated the greatness of Novak and said “I am not a champion, yet”. He is humble.

Here is the link. Hopefully you can hear this if you go in at 14 minutes, then you have 2 minutes left.

It’s worth seeing.

Back to Giles. Giles, you might learn something from watching this.

Novak is brilliant. An absolute credit to the game. I hope he goes on for another 5 years, (he said 15 years and who knows?).

zed Says:

Thanks MadMax, you are correct, both players are gracious and good sports. Carlos has been raised well to have good manners and Novak has always been a gentleman.

I think tennis is good hands. We may be saying goodbye to the big three (ok maybe not yet, Novak might have another year or more) but we have great talent saying hello.
