There are just six days left at the US Open and the final push for the final Grand Slam title of the year begins Tuesday at the US Open where the quarterfinal round gets underway.

In the men’s draw, Daniil Medvedev is the lone former champion but he’s on top half where he’ll face Jannik Sinner on Wednesday. The bottom half is the wild west.

Alexander Zverev has been to the final and among the rest of the players – Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe an Grigor Dimitrov, is the slight favorite to get to the Sunday title match.

Zverev will have to go through Fritz first. The American toppled Zverev from two sets down in a tight five sets at Wimbledon. Zverev will be out for revenge.

Dimitrov has a win over Tiafoe also coming at Wimbledon, but that was last year. Both are arguably better players now. The Bulgarian who made the US Open semifinals five years ago leads Tiafoe 3-1.

The women’s quarters begins with an Australian Open rematch between Aryna Sabalenka and the red-hot Qinwen Zheng who comes in off an Olympic gold.

Sabalenka rolled Zheng in Melbourne but Zheng has been on a tear winning 16 of her last 17 since Wimbledon. Sabalenka, of course, just won Cincinnati!

In the first quarter, American rising star Emma Navarro takes on the resurgent Paola Badosa. A first Grand Slam semifinal will await the winner.

skeezer Says:

Wow Fritz congrats go USA.

PK Says:

Triple wow! Emma and Francis, both underdogs in their matches, come through in fine style. Is US tennis on an upward trajectory again?

tennismonger Says:

^ That would be nice but I’m afraid the US’s attention span (among other things) isn’t what it was in the 70’s & 80’s…at any rate, US tennis will get a bump for sure.

chrisford1 Says:

Tennis faces the same problems in certain areas as golf does. Takes money to invest in, play takes too long for both the events and games/time on the links. Both would strongly benefit from gambling stakes permitted like FIFA, UK Club FB, the US Football League, and NCAA men’s basketball do.
Tennis in it’s reimagining years in Australia as a working class enjoyed sport to play and participate in came from gambling and men moving to venues easier than horses could so people could attend after a reasonable drive and make bets or bet and follow matches on shortwave. Supposedly, games also went faster back in the days of iron Aussie men & women and wooden racquets..Play fast, or die in the heat!

Djokovic has talked future challenges and more should be thinking of reforms. NOvak thinks Pickleball in particular endangers tennis in the long term, in it’s current version. The great Bryan Brothers have discussed gambling being tried in doubles in a test program to check if fan interest jumps and integrity can hold. Others note that golf and the wealthy players now jumping ne golf opportunities considering the media mindset of mundane golf broken by the “4 Holy Golf Majors That Alone Matter” bad for the sport! Similar talk is heard in pro tennis as wealth moves away from the West – why grovel to the 4 Slam Owners and the Broadcast rights licensers in the US anymore?

Tennis also needs Americans that are charismatic, appeal across groups and Queen Serena was not that. All her “Slams that alone Count!” did not bump up tennis interest in the USA much.
Nor is woman’s tennis followed as much as mens, following the same pattern as in all sorts except ice skating and girls gymnastics, it seems.

Okiegal Says:

Way to go Fritzy!! So glad to see him in the finals. IMHO Francis got the “big” head! He bragged that Ashe stadium was his house….. but not tonight!! Taylor’s casa 9/6/24!! C’mon Fritz and Jess….. ALL THE WAY!! It would be great to see two USA champions!!

skeezer Says:

Nice to see two USA players in both finals. Been a long drought on the men’s side, Fritz deserves to be there and congrats. Still expecting the Italian to win it though..

Wog Boy Says:

Belorussia 2

USA 0

PS
I know it’s not PC to mention the name of the country but Sabalenka isn’t Martian, she is proud Belorussian, same as the other two are proud Americans .

Okiegal Says:

Jess put up a good fight today. Aryna just too tough. She hits the ball so hard. I’m proud of Jess. She’s been playing great. Good to see her make the finals. Not an easy task!!
