A new women’s US Open winner will be crowned Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Favorite from day one, Aryna Sabalenka takes on first-time Grand Slam finalist Jessica Pegula for the final Grand Slam of the 2024 tennis season.

Sabalenka has played the part of tournament favorite all but dominating all foes en route to her fourth Grand Slam final.

The Belarussian world No. 2 has twice won the Australian and now twice made the finals in New York. Last year, Sabalenka was in complete control of Coco Gauff before the teen turned things around in the second and third sets. She’s 26-1 in her last three hard court Grand Slams and with a win today will be the favorite to take the No. 1 ranking down the stretch.

Pegula has had a long road to finally get to a title match at this level. The 30-year-old will try to become the oldest Grand Slam winners in years and to do it beat both No. 1 and No. 2s, a feat that hasn’t been done at a Slam since Svetlana Kuznetsova at the 2009 French Open.

“If you would have told me at the beginning of the year I’d be in the finals of the US Open, I would have laughed so hard, because that just was where my head was, was not thinking that I would be here,” Pegula said.

“So to be able to overcome all those challenges and say that I get a chance at the title Saturday is what we play for as players, let alone being able to do that in my home country here, in my home Slam. It’s perfect, really.”

If she has hope, she can look no further than a year ago when Coco Gauff beat Sabalenka for her first Slam.

“Last year it was very tough experience, very tough lesson,” Sabalenka said. “Today in the match, I was, like, `No, no, no, Aryna, it’s not going to happen again. You have to control your emotions. You have to focus on yourself.’”

Sabalenka leads 5-2 but Pegula played her close in the Cincinnati final last month. And both are on a roll. Sabalenka has won her last 11 matches while Pegula has won 15 of her last 16.

“We had a lot of great battles in the past, really difficult, tight matches,” Sabalenka said of Pegula. “She’s playing really incredible tennis. Feels like she’s back on track. Cannot wait to play against her.”

One of these two will add a US Open trophy to their cabinet.

skeezer Says:

Pre match prep: Pegula is hitting and warming up. Sabalenka preps by being in the gym. You could tell.
Sabalenka crushes the ball. Yes she has an imperfect game but when figures out the head part she will be unstoppable like she was in this final.
Congrats to her and congrats on USA’s Pegula, a fine run!

Wog Boy Says:

Belorussian Sabalenka is already unstoppable on the hard courts (AO and USO this year), she needs to master movement on the grass (she has a game) in order to get Wimbledon title, I can’t see her doing good on dirt, same as Sampras, their game just doesn’t fit well with dirt.

Wog Boy Says:

Last 4 HC GSs she made 4 finals and won 3 of them.

Alison hodge Says:

Well done Sabs on winning her second GS of the year, I must admit I miss the old days on the WTA when tennis was about court craft, and artistry, rather than just power hitters though, seems all a war of attrition these days

Sinner leads the rest of the ATP pack by 4,000 points.

=====================
One thing you can say about Sabalenka – she sure can glam up very well off-court. 6’1″ in American measurement, high Slavic cheekbones, long legs, fashionista done up hair and dresses or swimsuits – and she is a sponsors dream. Best looking of all the present top 10 WTA players, IMO.

Sponsor’s dream, aside from being from a nation that the fast declining West sees as an enemy, that is.
But even New Yorkers like her personality and her being a real success, overcoming her own nerves that can take her down in matches – and enjoying life while dealing with the impact still, of past tragedies.

Wog Boy Says:

Thanks CF1,
For a long time I am thinking of who does Sabalenka reminds me of, combined Raquel Welch and Ursula Andress, either will do😉

Alison hodge Says:

I love to see the players all glam Ed up away from the courts, male and female, but why did poor Dinara Safina get pulled to pieces for her looks, which wasn’t very nice….

Alison hodge Says:

Glammed

Wog Boy Says:

^^^^
…and what exactly that has to do with CF1 or my post, were we the ones that “pulled her to pieces”?!

What is the point of your post……ohh yes, you are the first one to come after CF1 (just for the sake of having a go at him) and I am collateral damage 😂

Alison hodge Says:

A few weeks ago the unattractive Dinara Safina he said

Alison hodge Says:

I thought what he said about Sabalenka was really nice, I thought what he said about Safina a few weeks ago, not so much is what I was talking about, and you well I couldn’t care less about you, one way or the other, more important things in the world than you, you have such a high opinion of yourself

chrisford1 Says:

Dinara? I felt sorry for her, honestly. Great talent, derailed on medical and personal issues after only 2 years as a top player. Gone after that. I think my comment on her not being as attractive is quite relevant in woman’s tennis where looks still matter a lot. Why in her era she got less sponsorship deals than Sharapova, Demienteva, Ana Ivanova. And a big part of why Sharapova out-earned Serena or Venus in getting endorsement deals.
No smear, Alison, (who has shown some Karen-like tendencies), just dollars and cents, eurofacts.
The original conversation was about a very good looking top junior, Iva Jovic, from America, whose great looks will add to her WTA earnings as happens in every generation

As an aside, as her looks affected her confidence, anxiety, led to binge eating and other medical issues. It didn’t help that her brother, Marat Safin, had movie star good looks. SHe also was not that appealing when she was choking in a match and brought the ugly.

Wog Boy Says:

Anna Kournikova comes to my mind, best paid female player without winning one single WTA title.

Wog Boy Says:

At the age of 37 after giving birth to three sons she looks better than ever, just scroll down a bit and you’ll see her with Roger in Berlin, I think CF1 has a soft spot for her, no?

PS
Is she taller than Roger?

Alison hodge Says:

https://images.app.goo.gl/SSJyvKjEMRKioCNr8 now you can’t tell me that Serena doesn’t look stunning in this picture

Wog Boy Says:

First two massive photoshops, blind Freddie could see that mean, Dinara is…well, Dinara.

Besides…”De gustibus non est disputandum.”

Alison hodge Says:

It’s an English language speaking forum, so I didn’t understand the last sentence, and most photos are shopped these days, the point is no need to be so mean when it comes to a person’s looks, especially when you hide behind a keyboard

Wog Boy Says:

“…the point is no need to be so mean when it comes to a person’s looks…”

Are you projecting, can you quote who exactly was mean and to whom?

As for English language, believe it or not English language has its roots in the language this proverb has spoken, but that comes to personal education, we, in socialist Yugoslavia had that language as compulsory in the high school, don’t know about England?

Alison hodge Says:

Fair enough but there’s still plenty of stunning pictures of both ladies in those links that aren’t photos hopped, I think all women have the potential to look absolutely stunning, nice clothes, hair, make up

Alison hodge Says:

Shopped sorry typo
