Novak Djokovic moved to 20-0 against Gael Monfils and moved into the quarterfinals of Brisbane.

The former world No. 1 eased past the Frenchman 6-3, 6-3 after a similar scoreline in his opener 48 hours earlier.

“We have been playing for many years. I have known Gael since I was 15. We played quite a bit at juniors and on Tour and have had a good score against him but we have had some incredible battles,” Djokovic said to the ATP. “He is one of the best, if not the best, athlete in our sport over the years. Incredible flexibility, agility and speed.

“He is such a great player to watch and a great character and attracts fans around the world to stadiums so tons of respect to him and hopefully we can play some more before we both retire.”

Djokovic will next face the returning big man Reilly Opelka who took care of Matteo Arnaldi.

The 27-year-old Opelka and Djokovic have never played before. Opelka played one match in two years but returned this past summer.

Like Rafa, Novak would not have been so successful but at times odd – with eccentric behavior:
=================
“I realised that in that hotel in Melbourne I was fed with some food that poisoned me,” Djokovic, who is known to monitor his diet strictly, told GQ.

“I had some discoveries when I came back to Serbia. I never told this to anybody publicly, but discoveries that I was, I had a really high level of heavy metal. Heavy metal.

“I had the lead, very high level of lead and mercury.”

Djokovic went on to describe how he was “very sick” with flu-like symptoms as he then headed back to Europe and an emergency medical team had to treat him multiple times.

However, ahead of this year’s Open, which kicks off on Sunday, he doesn’t hold any grudges.

So not mad at him or Australia – But Whaaaaaa The Frickleburger was Novak thinking?? How did his team in the same hotel fare with the lead and mercury thing???

Fun match for fans: Novak/Zheng vs Andy/Azarenka.

Zheng is a top doubles player. Shows it playing with Novak. Maybe if Djokovic gets lonely for a trophy, he can beg Qi Zheng to partner up with him at the AO or later on.
Novak now gets Alcaraz in the Quarters. Mixed doubles is better than nothing.
Also, in a mark that may last as long as Federer making 23 straight Slam Semis – Novak adds to his likely unbeatable ATP record H2H Stat, at Gael Monfils expense to go up 20-0 H2H. And no shame on Monfils. He and Novak have mad respect for one another.

CF1,

Novak was talking about the food he was given in detention centre, from where he was deported to Serbia, his team was in the hotel, Novak was in detention centre “hotel” and that was taken out of his months-old interview with GQ magazine, nothing new here, you would agree that food in five star hotel is not exactly the same as the food in detention centre where they keep illegal immigrants.

He declined to speak about that instead pointing to his interview to GQ magazine.

As for Australia handling covid crisis it has been admitted that it was way OTT, government has to reimburse all the people who were fined for breaking covid “rules” (around 5 million dollars) and all who didn’t pay fines had their cases dismissed, even present Prime Minister commented few days ago that it was unforgiving from the government of the day that they didn’t allow Novak to see the priest during orthodox Christmas which he spent in detention centre prior being deported.

Wog Boy Says:

Just one correction, those redounded fines apply for NSW, don’t know about other states:

“The NSW Commissioner of Fines Administration in consultation with the NSW Police Commissioner will withdraw all remaining 23,539 Covid-19 penalty notices. Around $5.5 million in total will be refunded to individuals who have made full or partial payment of a Covid-19 fine.26 Nov 2024”
