Semifinal night at the Australian Open features top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek a win from a final showdown.

The two will have work to do, however.

Sabelanka must take on best friend Paula Badosa. The 27-year-old Badosa is coming off a serious back injury from 2023 to reach her very first Grand Slam semifinal. The Spaniard, who won Washington last summer and made the quarterfinals at the US Open, just earned her best career Slam win over Coco Gauff in a comprehensive quarterfinal.

Badosa has lost her last five to Sabalenka. The world No. 1 has won her last 19 matches in Melbourne as she stands just two wins from a 3-peat at the Australian Open.

She’s won all 10 matches this season after her Brisbane title.

“She’s a great player and she has been through a lot,” Sabalenka said of Badosa. “Now she’s back on her best game. I’m really happy to see that. I have to stay aggressive, and I have to put her under a lot of pressure.”

In the second match, the ruthless Iga Swiatek takes on Madison Keys for a sixth time. Swiatek has won four of five and at the Australian Open she’s lost just 14 games en route to her second Australian Open semifinal.

“Honestly, I wasn’t going so deep in Grand Slams so much except Roland Garros,” Swiatek said. “For sure now I’m happy that I’m kind of playing my level here. Last year my journey here finished at fourth and third round, so for sure I feel more confident now.”

Keys, the last American woman, is trying to reach her first Grand Slam final since the 2017 US Open. She enters having won her last 10 matches including the Adelaide title over Jessica Pegula.

“I’m really, really proud of myself to be in another semifinal here and kind of hoping and looking forward to see if I can make it one step further,” said Keys.
