2025 Australian Open Day 11: Sinner Looks To Continue Streak; Swiatek Rolling
Jannik Sinner watched from his hotel last night as Novak Djokovic made yet another statement win coming back from an injury and Carlos Alcaraz to reach his 12th Australian Open semifinal.
Djokovic didn’t want to discuss the injury.
“Since I’m still in the tournament I don’t want to reveal too much,” Djokovic said. “But the medication started to kick in and they helped, no doubt. I had to take another dose.
“If I lost that second set, I don’t know if I would continue playing but I felt better and better.
“Managed to play a great couple of games to end the second set, and then I saw that Carlos was hesitant from the back of the court and I took my chances.
“Started to feel and move better. It didn’t bother me, didn’t create any hindrance toward the end of the match, only in the second set.”
Sinner now knows Alcaraz, who was 3-0 against the Italian last year, is out. He’ll take an 11 match win streak into a match tonight against Alex de Minaur. Sinner has won all nine meetings with Australia’s last player at the event. He’s also won 17 straight sets against the de Minaur.
“Every match is different,” Sinner said. “Playing against him here in Australia, it’s for sure different.”
Ben Shelton lurks for Sinner. He’ll have to go through his second straight Italian today in Lorenzo Sonego who has gone further than he ever has in a Slam. Shelton is seeking his second Slam semifinal.
In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek has coasted into the final eight dropping just 11 games. Today she’ll face the steady Emma Navarro who has worked her way into her first Australian quarterfinal after four straight 3-set wins.
