Djokovic Still Not Sure If He’ll Play Monte Carlo, Decision To Come Tuesday
Novak Djokovic admitted that he might still withdraw from his home event in Monte Carlo. The Serb has already made a rapid recovery from a harrowing right ankle turn last Sunday in Davis Cup, but even after three days of practice on the red clay courts where he lives he’s still not 100% certain he’ll play in his opener on Wednesday.
“I’ve been practicing for the past few days on the court and before that I was working on the rehabilitation, strengthening my ankle, and we’re still in the process,” Djokovic said yesterday. “Things are looking good. It’s better than I expected it to be. I still can’t 100%t guarantee that I will be on the court on Wednesday, because I have to be realistic and cautious and see in practice in the next few days, if I push myself to the limit, if I’m going to have any big problems. It will give me an indication if I should or should not play.”
Novak is slated to face the Mikhail Youzhny-Daniel Gimeno-Traver winner. The top seeded Djokovic is on the opposite side of 8-time tournament champion Rafael Nadal. Before then he is expected to make his decision on Tuesday.
“I have the understanding of the Tournament Director and the tournament organizers, which is important to me,” Djokovic said. “Im more optimistic than I was at the beginning of the week, that’s for sure. I’m on court. This is the third day in the row that I’m practicing. My practices haven’t been 100% effort, but I’ve been increasing it day-by-day. The state of my ankle is more positive than I expected it to be.”
Djokovic lost last year in the Monte Carlo final just days after the passing of his grandfather. The world No. 1 has two titles on the year at the Australian Open and Dubai. His last clay title came at his own, now defunct event in Belgrade in 2011.
