Federer Puts Switzerland Back In Davis Cup World Group; USA, Czechs And Germans Also Return

Roger Federer made the most of his appearance in Davis Cup this weekend clinching the tie for Switzerland beating Thiemo de Bakker and The Netherlands 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 Sunday in Geneva.
De Bakker joined with Middlekoop Saturday to stun Federer and Marco Chuidenelli in five set comeback, but Federer sealed the Swiss return to the World Group in the singles fourth rubber.
Federer led Switzerland to the Davis Cup title in 2014, and reminded fans that with the Olympics next year, he availability for 2016 Davis Cup remains doubtful.
“My idea was never to win it twice, the idea was always to win it once and we did that in front of a record crowd, which was a great moment for us all,” Federer told DavisCup.com
“I see this tie in isolation. Next year is an Olympic year. The summer will be very long and packed with highlights. It’s all a question of priorities. I can’t play everything and of course if I do play Davis Cup other things have to drop out.”
Elsewhere, Jack Sock finished off the USA’s win over Uzbekistan beating Denis Istomin. Jiri Vesely made amends for losing Friday, clinching the Czech’s victory over India.
Fabio Fognini won all three matches to pace Italy passed Russia. Taro Daniel beat Alejandro Falla to put Japan into the World Group. Kei Nishikori had earlier won over Santiago Giraldo to keep hopes alive against Colombia.
Philipp Kohlschreiber also starred going 3-0 in Germany’s win over the Dominican Republic.
Youngster Borna Coric kept Croatia int he World Group beating Thomaz Bellucci to clinch a 3-1 victory over Brazil. And all four team members won ties to help Poland edge the Slovak Republic 3-2.
Of note in Zonal Europe, Rafael Nadal and Spain lost just one set in a blowout 5-0 win over Denmark. Rafa won both his singles and his doubles.
