2016 Wimbledon Seedings: Novak Djokovic And Serena Williams Named Top Seeds

Gasquet benefited from the seedings, got #7 seed, Raonic 6 and Thiem at 8.

Isner, Anderson, Lopez, Kohls all in 17 to 32 seeds. Playeers none of the big 3 would want in their third round match.

As usual draw can be very important due ti some dangerous matches for top players in R32 and R16. As for QF, Thiem seems the one none wants and I ber Murray also doesn’t wnat to see Raonic in his QF.

And with Delpo not being seeded, he could be a R1 opponent for anybody. The draw will be very important indeed.I’m just hoping for no big-servers in the first week, whcih is when Novak is most vulnerable.

jalep I love Petra and I don’t think beating her at the mo signifies much, she’s been so off. Saw a bit of Woz and Puig. Woz was looking good, suddenly she lost!
Wish Cibulova was a foot taller, such gutsy player.

Novak has never ever won the Boodles. Never. Last year he lost to baby Zverev and to Kokkinakis.
Jusat like in Kooyong he lost to Tomic and I think Kokkinakis as well.
If you want to think that Novak was really trying to win, go ahead and think it.
So Goffin is now 3-28 against top-10 players…not 2-28. OK.

J-Kath is right to bring BREXIT up. Wimbledon is happening in this country in a time of a true landmark vote that can have a profound impact on the UK and the EU.
If it passes there, you may see the famously independent French follow.
A lot of issues driving this. The main being populations not happy loosing sovereignity to a body of unelected Eurocrats drawn from law schools and academia dictating to nations from their Brussels and Geneva edfices. And very unhappy given the perception Eurocrats are widely considered to have made many bad calls on currency, immigration, trying to overexpand the EU to the point where a number of Muslim nations want in, and Russia now inflamed over EU meddling in their backyard

Chrisford, this”backyard” phrase is too much used, and mostly incorrectly. Your backyard is your own property, but places like the Crimea and Ukraine are not Russia’s property; they are countries in their own right.

In the same way, Latin American countries are not America’s backyard, but sovereign states.

The fact that Muslim countries want to join the EU is not bad in itself. It depends what sort of Muslim we’re talking about. Remember, the current Mayor of London is a Muslim, but I don’t think he’s about to impose Sharia law in the city, or institute female circumcision and the burka!

Sadly, the immigration question has spawned lunatic right-wingers like the guy who recently murdered the MP Jo Cox. Scotland wants to join the EU independently if they should eventually leave the UK, and,joking aside, Scots are not all fools, having supplied many British Prime Ministers (some of whom had their failings, of course, as do all political leaders).

This morning I shall vote to stay in the EU, and I hope a sufficient number of fellow Labour voters will do the same. I’m not optimistic, though.

As for the tennis, it’s been raining heavily in London for most of the night, and goodness knows how the players will get a chance to hone their grass-court skills, with only Centre Court having a roof.

Do yourself favour and next time when you decide to post something do little bit of research and learn more about Ukraine (history, how it came to exist and boundaries) and Crimea (how and why became part of Ukraine only in 1953 during USSR), you obviously have lack of knowledge about that particular matter, not surprisingly.

Before you write anything more about Crimea and Sebastopol, about Ukraine too — learn.

Ukraine didn’t exist as a state before the Bolshevik revolution, it was a part of the Russian empire. Until 1954, Crimea was an autonomous region inside Russia, not Ukraine. The Khrushchev (N. K. was from Ukraine, btw) act was never ratified, ergo illegal. But anyway.

Crimea was a region with special rights in 1991, among them, the right to referendum — and the Russian used it and declared independence back then. Ukraine invaded Crimea despite the legal right of Crimea to form a country. Sebastopol was a Russian city with a special status inside Crimea. Eltsine, that so democratic president, was too drunk to take care of his own country.

The Maidan so-called revolution had one aim: to allow the US to take Crimea and the control of the Black Sea for themselves. It’s natural that Russia didn’t allow it. But Russia did it legally. It’s not a country like GB who will bomb Libya to get its oil, gold, and billions of dollars, or send its SAS disguised as terrorists to kill Serbian civilians (something also well documented; unfortunately, my own country took the same, dishonourable paths). They help organize a new referendum, where more than 90% of Crimean (predominantly Russians) decided to join Russia. Meanwhile, Ukraine is bankrupt, its gold stolen, while in Crimea standard of life has improved many fold.

Margot. In my area people openly discuss how they intend to vote in the way that they don’t do for general elections, possibly because the Referendum crosses party lines and we all have to live with the result for a huge chunk of our life-times whereas the results of a general election can be changed in 4-5 years.

@Jalep…..Will go with Serena, of course……then Keys. I am really liking her. My European favorite is Halep. WTA is always up in the air on who shows up to play and who doesn’t. Serena is a prrime example of that. She can play horrible and still eke out a win by the skin of her teeth….and sometimes not. But love to watch her….her passion for tennis reminds me so much of Rafa….and that’s a plus!!

Tough to back off an interesting political discussion, but in respect for people that seek refuge in sport to get a bit of relief from a troubled world, maybe it’s best to table it.

Sometimes it is hard to avoid, like when what Andy sought with the Scottish Referendum was a news topic on all the blogs, Facebook, etc,. BREXIT is another such time as not only important to Brits like J-Kath but the potential impact on the tennis structure. Tennis will be affected if the EU and it’s currency gets on a track for dissolution. If national sovereignity and more control by citizens of each nations destiny comes back. Spillover effects can impact Russia, America, the OAS, African Union, the desire by some Eurocrats to open Europe up to mass Muslim immigration to support their programs for an aging European population, pan-Balkanism.

So some words on it seemed appropriate, like if Queen Elisabeth II died during Wimbledon…

Given our comment groups varying backgrounds, an interesting discussion would result if Sean did do a political thread topic on something like “Would a restart of the Cold War over the Ukraine Republic, NATO expansion, potential breakup of the EU – spillover into sport?”

Looking ahead, I believe adverse factors off the tennis courts will be important at the RIO Olympics, impacting tennis and other athletes. And there will be unavoidable discussions on that.

I finally pieced things together about why there have been some comments about Nole possibly having a letdown. I’m thinking it might possibly be related to Andy Murray admitting that he had a letdown after he won Wimbledon in 2013. I specifically remember him saying that he felt such a relief to finally winning Wimbledon that he just wasn’t there against Wawrinka in the QF’s at the U.S. Open where he was blown off the court in straights sets. I’m still going to go with my opinion on this and say that the same won’t be true for Nole. But I do see your point more clearly now.

dave, for me, it’s nothing to do with andy. it’s more to do with the fact that the 3 times novak won wimbledon, he was coming off a difficult loss at the FO: 2011 semi, 2014 and 14 finals. so i always wondered if that lit a fire under him to win on the grass and buoy his spirits. this time, he’s finally achieved his goal, with a win at the FO, so i was just wondering if maybe he’d be less fired up for grass. but another way to look at is that he is half way to the calendar slam and that might motivate him and/or that he’ll be loose and more dangerous, feeling confident. hard to say, really.

Reading Johnny Mac’s comments today, he said that Nole will be highly motivated. I tend to agree with him on this one. And it’s more than just the calendar slam for Nole. Ever since he won the U.S. Open last year, things have really changed. Nole believes he can pass 17 slams. Beating Federer straight up at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year back to back swung the momentum in his favor. If he loses those 2 majors, it’s 19 to 10 right now instead of 17 to 12. Or if they split it, 18 and 11. The belief to get to 17 is there and the goal is in full force. That’s his main goal in the end.

A wait and see thing with the momentous Brexit vote for me, just going on my American experience, of various wards and states and especially Democrat-controlled large cities coming in late with suspiciously lopsided ballots. I don’t know if the UK has the problem with repeat voters, cemetery voters, phantom voters – I hope not.
Looks like “Leave” is definitely ahead as of this time. And it may be the start of a global revolt against unelected Elites written rules the Masses must follow and UN Covenents voted on by no one save appointed lawyers and career UN officials.

And back to voters having more say in their national destiny.

On Djokovic – I liken it to a medium distance race. Runner moving slowly up the pack, then powers up to a place in the group of leaders. Looking like the freshest and strongest – who as everyone watching the leaders pack suddenly sees or fears – may all of a sudden turn it on to the max and take over.

If you look outside “Slamcount” he is passing Legends marks right and left.

Novak takes motivation from USO boos, from not getting Grand Slam credit for his 4 in a row. He benefits I think from all the people saying only 4 Slams in a calendar year truly matters. Supposedly because it is so much harder to do 4 in a row starting at one arbitrary Slam, and can only duplicate Laver and Steffi that way.

I believe he and Boris are supremely motivated for Wimbledon. Should he win that, 5 in a row and even the most rabid and halftarded Fed fan will have a hard time making the argument 4 in a row in one year is far more of an accomplishment than 5 in a row. How he fares at the USO is irrelevant if he gets Wimbledon, IMO. No other recognized streak is bounded by a year. If that is argued, then you have to toss out all the win streaks that are not bounded by a calendar year.

5 in a row makes the concept only 6 in a row equals the “prestige” of the 4 in a row feat of Laver sound strange even to a kid ho passed 2nd grade math.

But should he not trophy at Wimbledon – (Tsonga has a monster serve day, etc.) the monster year he is on yet again would hardly be ‘lost’. ( Ok, it was a small poll but who would expect it from French? marie Le Pen is celebrating tonight-this will have a ramifications for france-big time! ° )

European nationalist parties were dismissed as jokes or threatened with legal action for “intolerance”.

It’s quite a mess, and transnationalism, free trade to move all the skilled worker jobs to China possible, the sneers of the Ruling Elites are entering a period where they can expect strong pushback. People seem no longer intimidated by charges of racism and un-PC beliefs for wanting their way of life to be preserved

This will be very traumatic for the Elites of Londonistan. We may see symptoms at Wimbledon when they attend…

Pretty remarkable how divided the UK was by geographical region. The Guardians map in yellow and blue is even more dramatic than the US red state-blue state map of 2000.

Chrisford, I don’t think the Kael comparison applies to the Brexit referendum. Many have complained for a long time that the Westminster governing gang is composed mostly of people privileged and out of touch with the masses, and this applies to the Labour and LIb-Dem parties too.

However, these politicians, and the press that supports them, are mostly right-wing. Listening to the people holding forth during last night, it was clear that the this narrow victory for leaving was achieved by people who are cynical populists happy to take advantage of the less attractive side of the British character. A supreme example of this was Margaret Thatcher, who came to power by appealing to the attitude summed up by the phrase “I’m all right, Jack”.

Our status as a bunch of small offshore islands has bred an aggressive distrust and dislike of foreigners, often descending to straightforward racism. People like Boris Johnson (a sort of mini-Trump)are less interested in politics than in their own image. He, and Farage (also in reality from a “posh” background)don’t have a coherent plan for our future.

The bogy of foreign immigration has by no means been slain by the referendum result. The National Health Service, starved of funds by successive governments of all political colours, has a desperate need for staff at all levels, and is forced to recruit them from abroad. Doctors don’t grow on trees, and not nearly enough are being trained here. So the doctors, nurses and dentists on whom I am increasingly dependent, are a United Nations in miniature, Indian, Caribbean, and assorted East Europeans, and this will continue. A proportion of those at Westminster who have run down the NHS are, like so many Americans, hostile to the whole concept of universal health care, branding it as communistic. Nonetheless, we in bankrupt old UK are healthier and longer lived than Americans. I’m already well past the average life expectancy of US males, and that means white Americans, not the generally worse off blacks.

Regarding Wimbledon, I am more concerned about the weather than anything else. London had loads of rain last night, with flooding in some places, and although it’s dry right now, there are plenty of clouds. I just hope Andy can get enough practice time, and I shall as usual follow his probably tantalising progress. If the unthinkable happened, and he could find a way to beat Nole, I reckon Lendl ought to get a medal. That assumes Andy reaches the final, and no doubt his progress will be hard on the nerves of his fans, as usual.

Margot, in my view, the Common Market – a relatively narrow construct — was considered the critical step to preclude ogoing wars. To me, the EU expanded and expanded its mandate, becoming a self-propelling mechanism that exptended its reach for the sake of extending its reach. I don’t know that it would necessarily be an adverse exercise to get back to first principles (the Common Market). But I mean that truly – I don’t know. As I said yesterday, I am sympathetic to both sides on this debate and hope the post-mortem involves a lot of listening.

1. The players at Wimbledon are paid in pounds, so they will get a Brexit pay cut of some degree. Though I think the 1 day plunge in markets and pound price was the “Pauline Kael Effect”. None of the Elites in Britain, and therefore in N America or Continental Europe following turn, expected this. None of their friends were for it….So a bit of panic to start with the Elites, their financial houses happened.

2. I wouldn’t dismiss the opinions and support of the buffoonish Trump or the nastiest, least credible, and most corrupt figure in US politics – Hillary Clinton. It is very important that the two of them, Trudeau, and the now-sulking big mouth in the White House all reaffirm that America will continue the special relationship and will not take sides.

3. Brexit is the start of a rebellion against the diktats to Brussels. The Netherlands, France, and Italy are all getting large parts of the populace wanting their own referandums, and last and certainly not least – a large movement is coalescing in Germany and Austria against mass Muslim and African immigration and other stuff shved down throats by the Eurocrats.

BBB may have the simplest and best read. The Common Market was a good idea, but along the way to the present, the Eurocrats lost their way in seeking ever more new powers outside the economic sphere and telling all that disagreed they were backwards, uneducated on the nuances Brussels grasped, and even…..racist and Islamophobic…thus complaints had no credibility.

I agree with BBB. Until they were demanding things like abandonment of the death penalty and industrial worker protections against cheap foreign labor be rolled back. How farmers had to farm. Ordering carbon restrictions and refugee quotas each nation had to obey.
The EU went too far, and the Elites did their sneering best to delegitimize complaints and concerns as invalid – because only the racist and poorly educated would have any issues with Brussels and with the anti-West university elites and Geneva-based NGOs that provided Brussels with much of it’s progressive rationals of ruling.

Maybe this will help smooth over the budding Cold War, which came from sanctions on Russia assisting majority Russians in Crimea doing the Ruxit from the Ukraine, and also supporting Russian majorities in East Ukraine gain self determination from the Ukraine nationalists..
