No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 6 Dominic Thiem set up a mouthwatering quarterfinal meeting on Sunday with straight-set wins at the French Open.
ADHEREL
“I hope [coach] Andre [Agassi] only saw the second and third sets,” Djokovic joked in his post-match interview. “I didn’t start off the blocks the way I wanted. He started very solid, but it was very close in the first set.”

Djokovic held off an early attack from No. 19 seed Alberto Ramos Vinolas 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-3, and Thiem bullied Horacio Zeballos 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

“I was enjoying basically every second of the match,” said Thiem. “The claycourt I’m feeling great on. And then also the conditions here are almost perfect for my game. I like the balls a lot. I think you really feel the balls with the racquet.”

Tournament favorite and No. 4 seed Rafael Nadal was also an easy winner Sunday, defeating No. 17-seeded Spanish countryman Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1 6-2 6-2. He will next meet another Spaniard, No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta, who was an upset five-set 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 6-4, 8-6 winner over No. No. 5 seed Milos Raonic.

“Is difficult to explain you my emotions at the end of the match,” said Carreno Busta, who tear-up speaking to the crowd after ousting Raonic. “It was the best victory of my career, in one of the best moments and the best places. This match you dream when you are young: playing Roland Garros, five sets, four hours and a half. It was really tough — really tough. But I just tried to do my best. I enjoyed — I suffer, but I enjoyed. And of course if you win, you enjoy more.”

Carreno Busta said he looks forward to playing to friend Nadal.

“t will be a really special match for me,” Carreno Busta said. “I will try to enjoy this match and learn a lot. I will play against the best. And then we’ll see — maybe I play and I lose easy or maybe I play and I win easy. You never know.”

Another Top 10 seed going the distance was No. 8 Kei Nishikori, who came back from getting bageled in the fourth set to defeat South Korea’s Chung Hyeon 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(4), 0-6, 6-4. In his next outing in the fourth round he will meet unseeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

No. 15 Gael Monfils benefited when No. 24 seed and French countryman Richard Gasquet retired trailing 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-3.

“I had had back problems for the past two, three weeks with a kind of neuralgia in the leg, no sensation in the thigh,” Gasquet said. “It’s very painful, but my back is better. I did my best for this neuralgia to disappear. I think the nerve is probably still a bit irritated. I tried as much as I could, but towards the middle of the second set I understood it was going to be very hard. I’m disappointed, but I simply couldn’t go on any longer.”

Monfils’ reward is a meeting with No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka.

Unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov was also a winner, powering past No. 21 John Isner in four tight sets 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(3).

Matches scheduled for Monday at Roland Garros are (1) Murray vs. Khachanov, (3) Wawrinka vs. (15) Monfils, and (8) Nishikori vs. Verdasco.

22 Comments for Djokovic, Thiem Set Meeting; Murray v Khachanov Monday at French Open

JM01 Says:

Novak will most probably lose to Thiem. Thiem has looked better than Nole in RG so far, controlled aggression from him and not mindless ball bashing as we have seen him do it at other tournaments. But Thiem ain’t getting past this Rafa though. Rafa Stan final would be awesome.

Van Persie Says:

Nole can deal with Thiem very well. But Thiem might win a set

Danica Says:

Khachanov is a nice surprise for me. I wouldn’t bet against him in this match with Andy. Really eager to see the result.

Colin Says:

Straight sets victory for Andy. He is evidently feeling confident, and his serve is working well. If he continues in this vein, he is capable of beating anyone, and I do mean anyone, including Rafa.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Congrats to Murray and Murray fans- I said the other day I was happy to see Novak playing his way back into form and I hoped Murray would prove he has as well.

Didn’t see the match today, but he looked awfully good against DelPotro.

The QFs are pretty uninteresting to me, unfortunately, except for the Novak vs Thiem one, which I think has been one of the most anticipated of the tournament.

Margot Says:

Like your style, Colin :) even if I don’t share your optimism. Interesting tho. his matches in the early stages of RG have been much shorter than last year.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Its amazing how quiet it is here for a 2nd week of a Slam!

Fed Fanatics uninterested.
Novak Nutters laying low so as not to have hearts crushed.
Rafa Rooter afraid to jinx this

That leaves the Murray Masochists, Wawrinka Warriors and Team Theim.

Van Persie Says:

^^ would be something, if clueless Cilic won this ;)

Willow Says:

Tennis Vagabond, Sport for me is a funny thing, and i just wait for things to unfold, thats why i dont believe in such a thing as a sure thing, it seems to be fans of other players saying this title is Rafas to lose, and strangly enough you dont here Rafa fans bragging about his chances either ….

Willow Says:

Cilic has played very well this FO, and could be the dark horse, and when hes playing well hes dangerous for any of the top players, but i really, really hope not though ….

RZ Says:

@TV – you never know, someone may bring a gong to the Murray-Nishikori quarterfinal.

Trying to come up with something alliterative for the Nishikori crowd.
Nishikori Ninjas?

Also, Carreno-Busta Boosters?

RZ Says:

TBH I’m surprised that Pliskova has stuck around till now. I was expecting she would do well at Wimbledon and the US Open but not on the clay.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

RZ, I like the CBB, but Sam Querrey already owns the Ninjas.

RZ Says:

TV, my creativity is failing me. I can only think of Nishikori Neophytes but unless they are new fans that doesn’t work.

J-Kath Says:

Colin: Ditto to Margot’s comments. Thanks for the confidence – welcome even if Andy fails to win. I’m travelling 7 hours Wed. so will miss Andy’s next – but have arranged for it to be “copied” -however, if he loses, I will watch with a drooping lip.

PS: The knowledgeable commentators talked about the semi-finals as being Andy’s next match?? – I must be tired…I thought it was the quarter-finals i.e. there’s Andy + Stan + Cilic + Nishikori….??

RZ Says:

@J-Kath, you are correct.
Commentators get things wrong all the time. Yesterday during the Bacinsky-Williams match, Mary Carillo said that Venus was the highest seed left in the draw. She probably meant the top half (since Pliskova Halep, and Svitolina are still in), but never corrected herself.

Emily Crow Says:

Wawrinka warriors, I like that (great match with Gael today, who was playing well)

RZ Says:

TV – Actually, we can use Nishikori Ninjas. I just remembered that Querrey’s fans are the Samurai.

RZ Says:

@Emily – I think Wawrinka Warriors is the coolest sounding group, but I think the Murray Masochists is the most aptly-named group. :-)

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Perfect!

Emily Crow Says:

@RZ, probably true re. Murray Masochists, but the past year has been pretty good for your team. I love Stan and he is certainly a warrior at the majors, but I always dread watching him at the Masters b/c he too often loses when he shouldn’t. Indian Wells was such a nice surprise this year and it was a bit heart breaking because he really wanted to win that tournament.
