Murray Ousts Davydenko; Roddick v. Ljubicic Today at Indian WellsPosted on March 15, 2007 Teens Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray led the charge into the Pacific Life Open quarterfinals at Indian Wells Wednesday. The Brit-Scot Murray upset World No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(3), 6-4, while fellow 19-year-old Djokovic followed minutes minutes later with a 6-3, 6-1 thumping over Frenchman Julien Benneteau. In doing so, Murray avenged last year's second-round loss to the Russian and Djokovic returned the same favor to Benneteau, who had defeated the Serb in his Indian Wells debut match in 2006. After saving four set points at 4-5 in the opening set, Davydenko succeeded in breaking Murray in the next game but then failed to serve out the lead. Murray broke back and reeled off the final four points of the tie-break to seal the first set. He carried the momentum to take the 2-0 lead in the second set and never looked back from there. "All the best players have that ability on the big points to kind of adjust up their game and, you know, believe in their strokes," said Murray, who also defeated Davydenko in the first week of the season en route to a runner-up finish in Doha. "And it's something that I worked on a lot. I think today it kind of showed that I have put a lot of work into it. And against someone like him, it's important because he's so tough. He's so tough when you get into rallies and I needed to serve well and I did that." Murray now gets the red hot Tommy Haas who destroyed fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-2, earning some revenge for his lopsided loss to the Chilean in the Australian Open semifinals. Gonzalez conceded just five games to Haas in that three-set victory. "I'm really looking forward to this revenge," said Haas. "When I saw the draw, you never really look ahead, but there was a possibility we might meet up in the Round of 16, got fired up already for it after beating Gabashvili, really, and I heard he was beating Soderling. So me and my coach obviously thought about it, how to play and everything, seemed to go pretty well." In Djokovic's fourth-round match, Benneteau began by breaking the Serb in a 14-point first game and also forced him to save triple break point on two more occasions in the first set. After closing the first set 6-4, Djokovic comfortably took control in the second set to advance to the quarterfinals. Djokovic will face David Ferrer next after the Spaniard defeated 1999 runner-up and compatriot Carlos Moya, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Today, as quarterfinal play begins Rafael Nadal meets Juan Ignacio Chela and Andy Roddick gets a shot at fellow top 10-er Ivan Ljubicic in the evening. |
