Henman v. Canas Highlight First Round at MiamiPosted on March 22, 2007 First round action in the top half of the draw continues on Thursday at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami with former Top 10 performers Tim Henman and qualifier Guillermo Canas headlining the Stadium schedule. In the first men’s match on Stadium, American teenager Sam Querrey plays Russian Igor Andreev for the first time. The 19-year-old Querrey has made one of the biggest ranking improvements in the Top 100, climbing from No. 386 at the start of Miami last year to No. 69 coming in here. Querrey has an 11-6 match record on the season with five of his losses coming to Top 10 opponents. He’s reached back-to-back ATP quarterfinals in Memphis and Las Vegas and won at least one round in each of his six tournaments this season. Andreev is 8-6 on the season and ranked No. 200. He missed nearly six months of last year due to left knee surgery (on Apr. 28). This year he led Russia to a 3-2 Davis Cup victory in Chile by defeating No. 5 Gonzalez and Massu in the fifth and decisive rubber. In the next match, Americans Robby Ginepri and Vincent Spadea meet for the fifth time (tied 2-2). Ginepri won the last meeting 6-4, 6-3, in the second round of Indianapolis two years ago. Spadea won the prior meeting 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of ‘05 Miami. Ginepri, a quarterfinalist here four years ago (l. to Moya), enters with a 4-4 record on the year. His best showing was the third round at the Australian Open (l. to Blake) in January. Spadea has a 23-12 career mark in Miami with a semifinal showing three years ago (l. to Roddick). The 32-year-old from Boca Raton has a 9-8 record on the season with a semifinal in Boca Raton and quarterfinals in Adelaide and San Jose. In the evening session, Canas has won five of the previous six meetings between the two and the Argentine won the last encounter 7-6(1), 7-5, in the quarterfinals of ATP Masters Series Indian Wells two years ago. Henman’s lone win came in the first meeting in the second round of ATP Masters Series Toronto in 1998. The 29-year-old Argentine enters with an 11-3 match record on the season and in his last tournament in Indian Wells, he ended Roger Federer’s 41-match winning streak with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the second round. Canas has climbed from No. 143 at the end of last year to No. 55, highlighted by his seventh career ATP title in Costa do Sauipe (d. Ferrero) last month. His best result in Miami was the fourth round in 2004 (l. to Roddick). Canas reached a career-high No. 8 in the ATP Rankings on June 6, 2005 and his best year-end finish was No. 11 the previous year. Henman is playing in only his third ATP tournament of the season (1-2 record) after returning last month from a four-month hiatus caused by a right knee injury. He split his round-robin matches in Las Vegas (d. Mahut, l. to Lopez) and lost in the first round to Jan Hernych in Indian Wells. The 32-year-old British No. 2 is making his 12th straight appearance in Miami (16-11 record), having reached the semifinals in 1998 (l. to Rios) and quarterfinals in 2000 (l. to Agassi) and 2005 (l. to Federer). Last year he lost in the third round to Simon Greul. Henman finished in the Top 10 ATP Rankings five years, the last in 2004 when he ended a year-best No. 6. His highest ATP Ranking was No. 4 on July 8, 2002. |
