Australian Open Day 9 Notes: Serena Meltdown Posted on January 22, 2008
Serena Williams has now lost in her last four Grand Slam quarterfinals...
Serena Williams says she was "having some issues" during her singles loss, but not physical as she never called for the trainer and played in her doubles afterward. ESPN did report the 8-time Slam winner had her quad "worked on." Williams was clearly listless at the start of the match so speculation has to be that something off court like a personal problem must have been the issue. Of course we will likely never know the cause, if any, for her play early on, or maybe it was simply that Jelena was too good. Jelena Jankovic has reached the semifinals at three of the four Grand Slams... Rafael Nadal has never lost a Grand Slam semifinal match... Roger Federer will clinch No. 1 with a win Wednesday night over James Blake, who blew three set points in the first set in a fourset loss to the Swiss under the lights at the 2006 US Open... James Blake has never reached a Slam semifinals. Neither has Agnieska Radwanska or Daniela Hantuchova... Justine Henin has failed to reach the semifinals of a Slam for the first time since the '05 US Open... Roger Federer has reached 14 straight Slam semifinals. He's also won 18 straight matches in Melbourne... Novak Djokovic has reached the last three Slam semifinals... Justine Henin is now 16-2 in Grand Slam quarterfinals... Roger Federer has won 18 of 19 career sets against James Blake. Federer has also won 40 straight matches against American players with his last lost coming to Andy Roddick at Montreal in 2003... Serena Williams has only defended a Slam once in her career -- 2003 Wimbledon... David Ferrer has won three of five matches against Novak Djokovic. The two split their four meetings last year. Ferrer has also won five of his last eight matches against Top 5 players...

From Cyprus-mail.com: "THE EDUCATION Ministry has appointed Cypriot tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis as the country's Ambassador for 2008 which has been designated by the EU as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue...The appointment of Baghdatis as Ambassador may raise a few eyebrows after the Cypriot tennis ace got a lot of stick in the international press last week when a video of him chanting the national anthem and anti-Turkish slogans in Australia surfaced on the internet."...
