Roger Federer's announcement that his girlfriend Mirka is pregnant has not dampened his winning touch, with the Swiss moving into the third round at
Indian Wells with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over
Marc Gicquel of France.
"I am happy," Federer said. "I was a bit rusty maybe, coming back from not having played. But it was OK. I'm happy I've won. That's always most important."
Federer is coming off a rest period where he withdrew from the ATP
Dubai and Davis Cup events citing a dodgy back. Federer will now face the huge-serving Croat
Ivo Karlovic, who beat
Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4 6-2.
Tommy Robredo,
Marin Cilic,
Igor Andreev,
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and
Fernando Verdasco were other winners on the day, with Andreev overcoming the explosive
Ernests Gulbis.
Federer is the No. 2 seed at the event behind world No. 1
Rafael Nadal.
