Andy Murray is now a father! Murray’s wife Kim Sears gave birth on Sunday to a baby girl, according to British reports.

Details – like the name of the baby – are still to come, but the BBC spoke with Murray’s grandmother, Shirley Erskine.

“I don’t have any details I just know that I’ve got a great granddaughter so that is just lovely.

“All I could think of after Andy had finished playing his final [in the Australian Open] was ‘Oh good, at least he’ll get home now’.

“It’s not easy getting home from Australia. He couldn’t have been further away. Fortunately, he was home in plenty of time and all’s well.”

Murray joins Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka as Top 4 players with children.

Murray is expected to take the rest of February off before returning for Davis Cup next month.

Congrats to Andy and Kim!

RZ Says:

Had he made it home from Melbourne yet? :-) Congrats to Andy and Kim!

BTW, I thought this article about odds on the baby’s name was funny. Have no idea what they are basing some of these odds on. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/kim-andy-murrays-baby-find-7336463

Leo Says:

Congrats Andy!

J-Kath Says:

Thought I’d share this twit:

“Slight delay in the announcement of the Murray baby, as they waited for Hawkeye to confirm that it was out.”

Giles Says:

I’ve congratulated the happy couple on another thread but one more time won’t hurt. Many congratulations Kim and Andy on the birth of your daughter.
😳 Was sure it was gonna be a boy .

Lol Giles, you thinking Andy should be copying Nole in everything?
;)

SG1 Says:

Congratz to Andy and Kim (…and Andy’s fans)! A really nice story.

Van Persie Says:

Well, the girl is Aquarius. Aquarius women are brave ;). Wish the entire Murray family all the best

Humble Rafa Says:

In Scotland, you buy a skirt anyway – boy or girl. Congratulations to the Mr. and Mrs. Kim.

My only hope is that the baby turns out better than Mr. Judy Murray.

jane Says:

congrats to andy and kim; a sweet wee girl, aww!!

chrisford1 Says:

Xisca – “You see how happy Roger, Nole, Stan, and Andy are – my beloved Humble. And playing better – no? Time to think how happy you could be too! Married, having little ninos.”

Van Persie Says:

Cf1, Stan is not married;)

Wog Boy Says:

Congrats to Kim and Andy on healthy baby girl, aquarius people are dreamers.

BTW, why do people still write Kim “Sears”, isn’t she “Murray”?

RZ Says:

@Wog Boy – old habits die hard

RZ Says:

I think we should start a Tennis-X collection to buy baby girl Murray a Christmas sweater and a mini ice bath. Who’s in? :-)

Wog Boy Says:

RZ, thanks. I just thought it is little be disrespectful to Andy if she hasn’t kept maiden surname, that is at least the case in the culture where I am coming from, no biggie :)

J-Kath Says:

RZ – She won’t need either, she’s going to be cool enuf…the Fed. boys and Nole’s wee one will be competing to get her to play mixed doubles with them.

J-Kath Says:

Wog Boy – betting (or rather guessing) in one way or another the “Sears” family will be included in part of her name: “Catriona? Sears Murray”

Humble Rafa Says:

chrisford1

I normally don’t respond to the anyone with the number one next to their name (their lineage has a long way to go get any respect).

Humble is all about respect for the game – which means no kids while being an active player.

Xisca takes care of me in many ways and all of her skills are always appreciated.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Is that a custom in UK (Scotland) that you include mother’s maiden surname in the children’s one?

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Did you talk about Kim or baby?

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy

In Finland (and Hispanic American countries) married women automatically have the choice of retaining their (maiden names or otherwise)….for sure…I wanted to keep my family name but wasn’t allowed in UK….could have changed it by deed poll…but what the heck……

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy @ 3.41pm I was talking about the baby. Including Kim’s maiden surname in the baby’s name could be seen as respect to her family (especially as Dad is a tennis coach). Yes? No?

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

In Serbia is the same, future wife have the choice (and they are specifically asked during wedding ceremony) to keep their surname (very rarely), to add future husbands one (not so rare) or to denounce her and accept husband ‘s one (most common), the babies then have that surname without mentioning mother’s maiden one except in birth certificate where says “mother Kim Murray born Sears”.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Not really in the culture where I am coming from, respect for my in low family by adding their surname to my child surname can be seen as disrespect to me and my family. If my wife accepted my surname there is no reason why my child should end up with her old surname too. If we agreed before marriage that she will keep her surname and add mine, which is common too, in that case baby ends up with double surname.

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy

Sorri mate… My family surname included the first female Cabinet Minister (who was named a Dame as late as 2015 and whose maternal uncle was Mountbatten (this bit possibly thru the husband)…she pursued calls for reforms for women….despite being a Conservative she was born and bred in Scotland….had no choice in those days..).

It wasn’t that that made me want my birth name…I was always mentally if not physically on my soap box in Hyde Park Corner.

We agree to disagree?

RZ Says:

@Wog Boy – some women change their last names after marriage, but choose to keep using their maiden names professionally – in which case they could be addressed either way depending on the situation. No of course I have no idea whether this applies to Kim, but if it did the media could have their choice of using either last name for her.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Don’t be silly:) no need to be sorry, different countries different customs, this workd would be extremely boring place if we all think and behave the same.

I don’t have problem with surnames, not at all, I am the last one in the line with my surname (which is even rare in the country of my fathers origin), after I am gone my surname will be gone since I don’t have sons nor brothers. My youngest told me she is going to keep our surname when she gets married, probably to make me happy. I told her, “Don’t be silly, the entire nations disappeared without a trace, one surname means nothing, you are going to do whatever makes you and your future husband happy and not to plant the seeds for the future (possible) arguments”. I don’t know if she is going to follow my advice, she is stubborn girl…I wonder who did she took on ;)?

Wog Boy Says:

@RZ,

I got you, thanks.

J-Kath Says:

RZ & Wogboy – All of which someone like Kim might choose to include her family name as well as taking Murray…

as they say we’ve all been thru – “much ado abbout nothing”.

Vive la difference.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Talking about aristocratic surname in your family you remanded me on great book I read in my early twenties, maybe even just around twenty, it was about young man whi comes to Paris to start his life, but was embarrassed with his plebiscite surname, so after finding that his mother had aristocratic background he opted to change his surname to his mother’s one so he can start his Paris life mixing with nobles. I hope mat4 is around so he can tell us original name of the book and the mane since I will translate here Serbian translation, writer was Honore de Balzac, book was “Lost Illusions” and the man in the book was “Lisyen de Ribampre”, keep in mind that I read thr book long long time ago but that name is still stuck in my head. Never had a chance to read the second book “The scenes from Paris life”.

mat4, it is your turn to correct me where I was wrong, don’t be to harsh towards me..as usual:(

chrisford1 Says:

Humble – You are not the only one who is humble and who Xisca is taking care of in many ways. While Xisca is not bettering my life, I fall under “humble” myself. Chrisford was taken, so I use my normal ID and password practice to add a number on the end to get a blog to accept user name as unique. If Chrisford1 was taken, I’d go with Chrisford2. It’s just that simple.
(Chrisford, it seems, is a famous basketball player and coach)
And we all know avoiding marriage because you “honor the game and are married to tennis instead” is a huge crock of poo.

Van Persie – Stan was married and has a 5 year old kid with his ex, who was a fashion model 10 years Stans senior. The marriage, though I give Stan’s coach greater credit, went 2010-2015 and corresponds with Stan’s rise in the rankings, his 2 Slams – though the marriage was over 2 months before the 2015 French Open…but for the technical paperwork needing to be finalized. Add Berdych and Ferrer are married, so that is 6 of the 10 in the Top 10.

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy – I don’t have an aristocratic family name, I was talking about women’s rights and why they should have the same choices as men. When I got married I only wanted what I considered was my mine to keep if I wanted…if Kim wants to give her respect to her parents and family, why not….is all I’m saying.

We’ve had to go too deep into this – not what I wanted.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

Sorry, then I misread your post where you are talking about your family surname.

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy

Okeydoke…and all the best to you and your daughter.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,
Thanks, I am pretty sure she will be right, not so sure about myself:)

chrisford1 Says:

J-Kath, name origin is fun to look at if you have the leisure to do so. I personally would like to read more into it, especially outside W Europe namings. Though that is fascinating and complex enough to keep devotees in learning more and more but never getting to be adept at all names in the Lombard region of Italy or the tribal naming tradition plus nuances and back history of the Celts .

The names in W Europe and by proxy, lands settled by them outside Europe, were far truer to origin and “family socioeconomic placing” 200 years ago than now. Social status mobility, mass movement of people to cities and industrial townships and government services locales made last name origin mean less and less. And all the intermarriage, fall of the aristocracy, etc., etc.

So someone with a German last name of Mueller, given by long family ties as mill owner/operators might be a MD doctor not a miller, have a family tree with Native American tribal names appearing, a grandparent named Archer because they were from a line of bowmen and a grandparent who was a Separdic Jew whose own family name of el-Tazil had to be changed by decree of Austro-Hungary to a more palatable name and had the money to purchase a premium name like “Gold” or “Morgenstern” (Morning star).

Last name means less and less, but it is fun to know as ‘ooolies’ – neat but relatively useless facts.

danica Says:

Best wishes and sincere congratulations on a birth of a healthy baby girl! May she live a long and happy life and fulfill all her dreams.

CF,
Morgenstern – that’s actually what my name (Danica) means. Danica is the first star that appears on the sky.

BW,
It’s so happened that I retained my maiden name although I had it in mind to have two surnames (my maiden one and my husband’s). But it was such a hassle getting all the papers changed (IDs both Serbian and American) that I just went with what was the easiest way at the time. [But all my books have my name with both last names written on them :). ]

Back to the topic…
One more time, CONGRATS to Andy and Kim and their families!!!

danica Says:

Wog Boy, please accept my apologies, I abbreviated your name wrong. To the best of my knowledge, there’s no BW here. It was meant to be WB.

Wog Boy Says:

danica,

I presume that BW is “šatrovacki” for WB?:)

BTW, I always thought tha “zvezda Danica”, “morning star” or “Morgenstern” is actually planet Venus and not a real star, was I wrong?
My “gimnazija” knowledge is fading away:(

Wog Boy Says:

danica,

Apologies accepted;)

danica Says:

Wog Boy,
Yes, actually, the Venus rising ;).
My “šatrovacki” was in error ;).

Margot Says:

News alert! News alert kath and RZ!
apparently Baghdadis puts his latest win down to the birth of his 2nd child, which has been calming and inspirational!
Andy just better get moving…;)

danica Says:

Congrats to Baggy too!!
Wow, so many little ones in the lives of tennis’ best. Nice!

J-Kath Says:

Oh Margot…..he should have done a Roger …2 in one go. Never mind – one will be enuf to win the French….I’m sure Rafa and Nole will be accommodating.

J-Kath Says:

Danica

Are you an Author?

K.

J-Kath Says:

And now,”the wee lassie” is mentioned in the political football match in the House of Commons today….

“Andy Murray’s daughter could be winning Wimbledon before Scotland’s new funding settlement is agreed” Labour complained, amid calls for David Cameron to get involved.

RZ Says:

@Margot – good news for Baggy! Hopefully all this winning after the birth of a child will carry over to Andy in those final/semifinal matches (he’s doing pretty well until that point).

RZ Says:

@J-Kath, one of the TV channels here in the U.S. will show the British House of Commons and Questions to the Prime Minister. It’s some of the best and most under-rated comedy on TV.

J-Kath Says:

@ RZ

That was a wonderful remark. And noisy!
Really love your remark.
K

HJF Says:

Congrats to Andy and Kim on their new arrival, and Baggy too….

Lodhi Says:

@J-Kath

I like how you end your posts with ‘K’. Full marks for being a trend-setter and a woman with style!

L

J-Kath Says:

Hey, thanks Lodhi. Do you also belong to the superior gender or are you U male?

mat4 Says:

@J-Kath:

Sorry, but just to tell you that you forget two letters: “fe”, after U.

J-Kath Says:

@Mat4…..Did you wake up tired . dear boy?

Michael Says:

Hearty congratulations to Andy and Kim for becoming proud parents.

I hope becoming a Father, Andy will turn a new leaf emulating the likes of Roger, Novak etc., and bring laurels to the Sport.

Considering his enormous talent and versatility, Andy is an under achiever and I hope things will change for the better and he will build up on his two majors that are already secured in cabinet.

Lodhi Says:

“are you U male?”

If by U male, you meant the Ultra-alpha-who-is-crazily-desired-by-every-female-in-the-house male, then yes, I’m a U male. If it was a typo, then even then, I’m a U male. U males are like successful Johnny Bravos … Huh Haaah Huh ! Do the monkey with me.

mat4 Says:

@J-Kath:

Never, dear girl. Being tired is not an option for a man.

RZ Says:

Still no baby name announcement. I wonder if they are considering “Margot.” :-)

J-Kath Says:

Mat 4

Not to spoil your dreams, me dear – I take it you have never eavesdropped on what the women say?

J-Kath Says:

RZ – How could they not RZ – that’s what’s holding up the announcement. They like the idea of a Celtic Welsh fairy godmother…but David Cameron is holding out for Samanatha….and if Nicola Sturgeon doesn’t support him, she’ off to Outer Mongolia….U heard it here first.

Scot Says:

Congrats and loving thoughts to Kim, Andy and their little girl. May God bless you all.
