Bernard Tomic’s Head-Butting Dad, John, Has Been Banned From All ATP And WTA Events Until Further Notice
After incidents this past week, the two governing tours of tennis took swift action against John Tomic banning the father/coach of Bernard and Sara, who competes on the WTA, from all men’s and women’s events until further notice.
The combustible Tomic drew international attention for his alleged assault on Benard’s practice partner, Thomas Drouet, this weekend. The Frenchman also revealed John has punched his son in the jaw earlier in the week.
After a history misconduct, the tours have banned Tomic from receiving a credential at any of their events.
“Following last week’s incident in Madrid concerning John Tomic, and the ensuing investigation, Mr Tomic’s credential privileges have been suspended at all ATP tournaments until further notice,” the ATP said in a statement. “The ATP’s investigation into this incident remains ongoing.”
Said WTA CEO Stacey Allaster, “At the WTA we have zero tolerance for any type of abuse – emotional, physical, etc – and I think the WTA has put policies in place … to educate young athletes about what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior, and without question we have zero tolerance for it.”
Tomic has denied the charges and must return to court next Tuesday on May 14 in Madrid.
Former Australian doubles standout Josh Eagle will step in as Bernard’s interim coach, according to Tennis Australia.
