With Wife Mirka About To Give Birth, Roger Federer Has Withdrawn From Madrid
Roger Federer announced today on Facebook that he was withdrawn from the Madrid Masters 1000 to be with his family. Federer’s wife, Mirka, is in her eighth month of pregnancy and due to give birth to the couple’s third child any day now at a hospital in Zurich.
“I’ve decided to withdraw from Madrid to be with my wife Mirka during these next few exciting weeks for our family,” Federer posted earlier today. “I apologize to my fans and hope to be back in Madrid next year. I’ll be training near my home, and am excited to rejoin the Tour soon!”
Federer, a 3-time champion of the tournament, made it known that he would skip events to be with his family for the birth of the baby.
He joins fellow past winner Novak Djokovic, who pulled out yesterday due to continued issues with his ailing right wrist, as late withdrawals from Spain’s biggest event.
Depending on the new born’s arrival, Federer may or may not be in Rome next week. Though with the timing, it hints he will play at the French Open in three weeks.
The couple welcomed their first children, twin girls, in July 2009. They announced a third child was on the way last December.
