It’s a rematch of the Wimbledon final as World No. 1 Novak Djokovic meets No. 2 Roger Federer in the final of the US Open today.

The top two in the world have met 41 times before with Federer leading 21-20. It’s their 14 meeting in a Grand Slam, Djokovic leads 7-6.

ATP NOTES
NO. 1 DJOKOVIC vs. NO. 2 FEDERER: The Top 2 players in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, meet for the 42nd time Sunday in what has become the most riveting rivalry in all of tennis. Each man enters the final in fantastic form – Djokovic posting a record-setting rout of defending champion Marin Cilic on Friday and Federer sweeping 28 straight sets since losing to Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. The champion receives 2,000 ranking points and $3,300,000. The runner-up receives 1,200 ranking points and $1,600,000.

US OPEN FINAL RECORDS: Djokovic is 1-4 and Federer is 5-1 in US Open finals. The Swiss superstar returns to the final for the first time since winning five straight in 2004-08 and falling to Juan Martin del Potro in 2009.

DJOKOVIC’S HISTORIC SEASON: By beating Cilic, Djokovic joined Federer and Rod Laver as just third player in the Open Era to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a single season. He has advanced to 16 of the last 21 Grand Slam finals overall. Federer reached 18 of 19 from 2005 Wimbledon-2010 Australian Open (also 18 of 21).

FEDERER’S HISTORIC PUSH: A victory Sunday would make Federer, 34, the first player in the Open Era to win six US Open titles and the oldest US Open champion since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970. Should he win in straight sets, Federer will clinch his second Grand Slam title without dropping a set (also 2007 Australian Open) and be the first US Open champion to do so in the Open Era. Neale Fraser was the last at the 1960 US Open.

jane Says:

waiting, rain delay…

cool stat:

Djokovic (9) vs. Federer (17) represents 26 Grand Slam titles, the most of any pair of Slam finalists in the Open Era. #USOpen

madmax Says:

Come on Fed! Hi Jatin! Hi Jane!

Looking forward to a good, great, brilliant match!

jatin Says:

Hi madmax…. Waiting for the rain to stop.
Its 2:00 AM (night) in India right now

Gypsy Gal Says:

May the best man win….

madmax Says:

I know; all this tension Jatin; driving me a little bit insane. Been tense all day!

jatin Says:

Yeah, especially when you realize fed is in the Hardcourt finals after 5 years (after aus open 2010) :)

Gypsy Gal Says:

Hi Madmax, wont see the final,as i have to go to bed to get up early, but i hope you enjoy it anyway….

jatin Says:

Gypsy
Will keep you updated

Vidzy Says:

Will the rain affect the speed of the court ??

madmax Says:

Roger Federer could win his first major title in three years on Sunday
Novak Djokovic chasing third grand slam of 2015 when he faces the Swiss
Federer has not dropped a set since losing to Djokovic at Wimbledon
The start has been delayed due to a passing shower in New York

*drum roll* *eye roll*

jatin Says:

Just checked the stream and they are showing the serena vinci match.
Not before 5 they are saying

madmax Says:

An important statistic:

There are 23,000 spectators in New York to see the final everyone hoped for at the start of the tournament.
David Beckham will be in that number, as will Bradley Cooper and Damian Lewis.

:)

madmax Says:

‘This will possibly be the best US Open final we’ve ever seen’

That’s the view of Greg Rusedski ahead of the clash of the World No 1 and the World No 2.
It is fair to say that Djokovic has not played the standard of tennis Federer has so far in the United States but his presence in a Grand Slam final will never be underrated.

Vidzy Says:

I think Federer does have the edge over Nole on faster hard courts ( Shanghai , Dubai and Cincinatti…roger won all of them pretty comfortably)…the 2 matches he lost to Nole he had match points and Fed wasnt even serving this good..I think today’s match is on Federer’s raquet..If he drops his level, he will lose for sure…If he sustains it and doesnt get broken he has a great chance to cause the upset !!

madmax Says:

Jatin,

Seems it’s going to be another 30 minutes or so! :-(

This is the last time we will ever see a final at the US Open delayed for rain due to the impending completion of the roof and amen to that.

The consensus forecast seems to be that this will continue for another 45 minutes or so before things improve.

At the moment no attempt is being made to dry the court, suggesting that they know it will be a thankless task for a while.

madmax Says:

I wonder who is the most nervous? Jatin? or Me?

just kidding!

Novak or Roger?

jatin Says:

Madmax
Oh, I hope it will improve soon. I should rather hear some music for a while.
Its tough to pass time at this point.
Yeah, atleast there will be roof next year. That’s a positive for sure

jatin Says:

I wonder who is the most nervous?

Probably, the Umpire ;)

Markus Says:

I opened my pinot noir too soon. More than halfway done and no tennis yet.

the DA Says:

Since people love to rely on stats so much these days. Stats from previous meetings indicate that it will indeed be close. In fact (crazy though it sounds), Roger has had MP against Novak every time they’ve played at the US Open. Plus: Novak is 1-4 in finals, Roger is 5-1.

Either Nole has to get over this weird bugaboo in finals or Roger is going to have to get over the hex os losing 2 matches after holding MPs. ;P

madmax Says:

Markus!

You did the right thing! Open another bottle soon, and the match will be “over!”.

madmax Says:

talk about building suspense and tension. A gothic novel couldn’t have done better!

madmax Says:

jatin,

who is umpiring the final tonight?

jatin Says:

madmax
Actually, i have no idea either. LOL

jatin Says:

So now they are saying nothing before 5:30

madmax Says:

jatin,

I am going to have to doze a while; hopefully by the time I wake up, the match will have started.

Will see you in a little while. I just wonder, why it has taken so many years for the organisers to fix a roof; these delays are tortuous.

jatin Says:

madmax
Ok, Will see you soon:)

madmax Says:

jatin,

disturbingly, possible talk of a Monday final? You gotta be kidding me?

Rain off. And on. And off.
STUART FRASER IN NEW YORK FOR SPORTSMAIL: Frustratingly the rain is on and off at the moment, but the forecast suggests it will clear up later on.
From what I hear, they will make every effort to get this final played tonight, so no suggestion of a Monday final yet.

madmax Says:

jatin, this doesn’t look good:

Rain back on
It’s falling again on the Arthur Ashe court as hard as it has been throughout the last hour or so in New York. The umbrellas ping back up across the court. Frustration all round.

jatin Says:

Oh, that’s a really bad news. Hope we will get to see the match today. I don’t want to wake up whole night only to hear the match has been postponed to Monday. :(

jatin Says:

just read this new on yahoo updates

20:49 GMT – The net is up! – Jim Slater reports that the net is up and the drying machines are making their final passes

jatin Says:

New York (AFP) – 21:19 GMT – Good musical karma? – Stadium speakers are blaring “Abracadabra” by the Steve Miller Band, Jim Slater tells me.

jatin Says:

Rain on and off.. :(

kriket Says:

This match is already f***ed up, obviously. No greatest final of all times can come out of this mess.

Michael Says:

Really looks quite frustrating. Keeping my fingers crossed ? When will this match start ?

jatin Says:

Not before 5:45

Michael Says:

The weather forecasters have made an absolute mess of the whole thing when they predicted clear weather for the day with mainly cloudy skies !!

jalep Says:

Michael, the click on the link I posted is to the Guardian live blog — it updates frequently…

Now saying more like 8pm EDT or later. It looked like the rain was stopping but it started raining again.

Michael Says:

Thanks Jatin !! Hopefully mother nature has to relent.

jalep Says:

Oops link is on another thread, Michael. Posting here: they have pictures and updates automatically…

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2015/sep/13/us-open-2015-novak-djokovic-v-roger-federer-mens-singles-final-live

jatin Says:

Michael
According to gurdian:

The bad news is the rain is coming down as hard as fallen all day. The latest update is no play before 6pm no matter what. That’s 25 minutes from now and seems wildly optimistic as the court is soakes.

Michael Says:

Thanks Jalep !! I am getting live pictures and the situation is pretty grim. May be, we should be prepare ourselves for a Monday final. It is a real crime that the US open doesn’t sport a roof all these years !!

Tommy Says:

Assuming the rain stops and they get going today, doesn’t this obviously favor Djokovic by slowing the court down?

jalep Says:

Hour by hour weather for Flushing, NY…

Looks good after 7 pm EDT.

http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/11368:4:US

Flyer Says:

They will wait as long as possible to get match in tonight.

Just hope it doesn’t start too f’en late.

chris ford1 Says:

Love that Nole and Mario Ancic are still thick as thieves after all these years. Back around 2005-2007 Serbs and Croats alike wondered why Novak and Mario were close. Some said the young Serb might become as noted a player as Mario, but why friends??

Ancic hit with Nole at Indian Wells this year, and when Ancic was unfortunately finished with tennis due to illness and attending law school at Columbia, they would hit on the courts up there.

One of Djokovic’s more admirable traits (Rafa is similar) is they tend to keep the friends they make from childhood on, and their high tennis status and megamillions is off to the side in the relationships.

Tennisfan Says:

This rain delay is taking so long!

Tommy Says:

You have to believe the weather, the soaked court and just the waiting favors Djokovic.

jane Says:

novak hates waiting. usually comes out flat in those situations, but hopefully not today!

so long, ugh!

mat4 Says:

I think the waiting favours Federer.

mat4 Says:

Update from the Guardian:

anthem at 7.02, pre-match interviews at 7.05, first ball at 7.18.

Jeez Says:

Man !! 3hrs of sleep wasted

This better be worth it …

Humble Rafa Says:

An Indian man, who was born in the middle of the 19th century, won the mixed grandslam. Not bad, old man, not bad.

kriket Says:

So it sort of kind of begins for the second time now

Flyer Says:

Don’t think the wait will effect them – they are both use to situations like that.

Just hope the weather holds – no more interruptions

Markus Says:

I’m ready!

jatin Says:

HR
Leander paes is a legend of doubles. It seems like he could play forever :)
Sania is not bad either. Both have won slams this USO with same partner. Martina Hingis

gannu Says:

all the best fed fans

super nervous for my feddy bear

jatin Says:

SO GAME ON

Jeez Says:

Jeez Says:

Jeez Says:

2nd

kriket Says:

Break points in the first game

Jeez Says:

Saved

By

FHDL !!

Jeez Says:

ACE

ERROR @ net

3rd DEUCE!!

Jeez Says:

DOUBLE FAULT

3rd BP!!

Markus Says:

Too many errors from Fed!!!

Markus Says:

Roger is more nervous than I am.

Jeez Says:

Finally

Game Fed 7min 3BPs saved!!

Daniel Says:

Great hold. First game is tense

jatin Says:

Serve fed.. Serve.
Saved 3 break points. Nervous start

Tommy Says:

DEUCE! ACE! Jeez (Geez) people, that’s what game trackers are for and TV. Already see Roger will be challenged on his serve as he escaped that.

Markus Says:

Whew! Sigh of relief followed by a big gulp of wine.

Jeez Says:

LOVE hold by Djokovic

Daniel Says:

Wow, what a ame by Djoko, Federer like😜

Daniel Says:

Djoko on and Fed tense. 0-30

Tommy Says:

And No1e breezed through his game. Long way to go and it’s obviously going to favor him with these conditions.

Jeez Says:

0-40

3 BPS

Daniel Says:

Djoko is agressive, going for lines, flawless so far.

Tommy Says:

And No1e looks ZONED IN! Trouble….

Jeez Says:

Are the conditions heavy??

Daniel Says:

2 saved. 1 more to go

Markus Says:

Djokovic already dialed in. Looks like it’s going to be a short night. I fell bad already.

kriket Says:

Vintage Đoković

jatin Says:

Novak breaks. 2-1

Jeez Says:

Converts on the 6th oppurtunity

2-1 Djokovic

Tom Says:

Al that Roger hype… Already looking like he’s in trouble…Sabr time? Let’s see how No1e reacts to it.

Daniel Says:

What a point. Love this 2 shotmaking. Djoko breaks and is perfect today.

Let’s see if he holds easy again. Fed needs to hold east next game. Faced BP’s in 2 consecutive games. Not good at all going forward.

Daniel Says:

Yes Jeez, more humidy, cooler temperature heavier balls.

Jeez Says:

Djoker down !!

Tom Says:

I guess that’s one way Roger might win. What the heck was that?

Daniel Says:

Bad fall. Blood comingh because it was already white no skin.

jalep Says:

Omg. Bad fall Novak :/

left some skin from his arm on the court – it’s bleeding. But more concerned about an ankle. Mto needed.

Daniel Says:

Triple BP for Fed. Djoko full of bruises, elbow and hand. Feel bad for him

Jeez Says:

0-40

3 BPs

MUST CAPITALIZE

Daniel Says:

And Fed breaks back. That wrong foot half volley literally broke Djoko.

jatin Says:

That was a nasty fall.
2-2

Jeez Says:

Brakes back in 2nd oppurtunity

kriket Says:

Đoković seriously injured himself in that fall, quite unlucky there. Hope it doesn’t disturb his game more than that break he suffered. Would be stupid.

jalep Says:

Take a MTO Nole, please

Federer breaks back and holding easily.

Tom Says:

Nice, trip and the whole thing just changes. This is why I hate the USO.

jatin Says:

Fed holds.
3-2

Daniel Says:

3-2 Fed. djoko shoudo call the trainer to cover those spots. He has 3 bruises: forearm, hand and close to knees.

Tom Says:

I can hear the Djokovic haters screaming about the MTO. What a bunch of bull. No wonder he’s 1-4 at the USO.

Daniel Says:

Merr for Fed to be more agressive, but Djoko lost a bot of focus. Missed some returns. Hope they resume play as normal.

Jeez Says:

This game will tell if that fall was SERIOUS ??

Daniel Says:

Wow, BH DTL winner for Fed from a low shot. 30-30

jatin Says:

Roger not moving as well on his forehand side
3-3

Daniel Says:

Djoko holds

jalep Says:

That’s the kind of skinning on his arm I’m familiar with from crashing my bike now and then. It hurts more later than in the moment.

The ankle/leg position looked bad. But his adrenaline will keep him pain free and on high alert, for now.

Daniel Says:

Fed serving and volley on second serve. Didn’t work as Djoko is a great passer. 30-0 game and Fed loses 4 staright points. Still not convincing on serve. Let’s see if he’ll have another great return game.

Tom Says:

Wow! I feel a little better now as a No1e fan. Already saw on Twitter people are complaining about the MTO. I guess he should have kept on bleeding. People are just not with it aometine.

jatin Says:

What was that game roger.
Novak breaks

Daniel Says:

Fed was broken 2 times the whole tournament and again facing Djoko’s return is broken tiwce already. Low first serves percentage at 47%. Trying to force too much.

Jeez Says:

Federer playing like Wawrinka with 47% 1st serve!!!

Jeez Says:

And conditions not helping either

Daniel Says:

Awful DF by Djoko, 30-30

Daniel Says:

Awful FH long. BP
Will ee see another break roght back?!

Jeez Says:

MISSED FH

BREAK POINT Fed

Jeez Says:

WASTED !!

Daniel Says:

Error Fed shouldn’t do. He needed to make Djoko play after those bad misses. Now Adv Djoko to close 5-3 lead

Jeez Says:

That missed BP could be the set point !!

Daniel Says:

Well Fed at least has to hold and force Djoko serve the set.

Tom Says:

It’s obvious these conditions favor No1e. And to add its breezy now.

Jeez Says:

Federer must hold to make Djokovic serve it out

jalep Says:

Some nervous playing and over-playing from Fed. 12 UE’s to Nole’s 7.

Daniel Says:

What a point for Djoko but Fed c’mon, another 30-0 that you are complicaring yourself. If he can’t hold he’ll lose in 3.

Jeez Says:

Eerily similar to 2009 AUS Final(against Nadal)Federer playing into Djokovic’s hands..

mat4 Says:

Now it’s time for Novak to be steady and especially to serve well. Hajde Nole!!

Daniel Says:

Fed served 5 times, was broken 2 times, faced BP, 2 times and only hold easy 1 time after Djoko fall.

If he doesn’t improve his serving next sets won’t even be this competitive.

jalep Says:

1st set Nole!

jane, you might want to come back :D

Markus Says:

That SABR will be erased from the tennis vocabulary after tonight.

Jeez Says:

SET Djokovic

jatin Says:

1st set Novak

mat4 Says:

Daniel, I hope it won’t be competitive. An easy three setters for Novak would be my dream…

Tom Says:

Well, doubt Roger wins now. Hasn’t come back after dropping the first set to No1e in ….. I don’t remember if that has happened?

Daniel Says:

Well, congrats Novak fans #10 is coming. Maybe Fed stills a set and that’s it. Djoko’s retunr is just too good and he seems to read Fed’s serve well as nobody else does.
Think is gonna be a three set win for Djoko now.

Jalep, looks like I’ll win bracquet challenge😜

Daniel Says:

But Markus, the gane he ised SABR he broke, so…

mat4 Says:

@jalep:

I took medications for blood pressure, for tachycardia, for nerves… I understand jane quite well.

Like I wrote before the match, the result is on Novak’s racquet. Let’s hope he will continue to play well.

mat4 Says:

The physiognomy of the match is what Novak needs. Long, gruelling rallies.

Daniel Says:

mat4. Novak never won any of his 9 Slams titles before in staright. Always in 4 or 5.
Maybe today is going to be the exception and if so, it will bode well for his future Slam finals. AO his is the unsipited favorite and suddenly he can enter RG with extra pressure going for 4 in a row, like 2012. As if he needs extra pressure for RG😜

Jeez Says:

Must improve 1st serve & avoid long baseline rallies if Federer wants to win this…

Markus Says:

Talking about the majors, it is getting more obvious that Federer still has the ability to beat everyone but not Djokovic.

Okiegal Says:

Novak is the stud of the first set…..let’s see who will get that billing in second set……..should be very interesting…….it will be Novak…

Daniel Says:

18 UE for 10 games is way too much

Daniel Says:

Fed holds after deuce. Maybe this relax him a bit.

jatin Says:

Fed is struggling :(
Self destruction mode

Jeez Says:

SABER!!

Winner

Daniel Says:

Love this SABE winner

Daniel Says:

0-30. Awesome BH DTL winner. Danger for Djoko

Jeez Says:

0-30

2nd serve

Daniel Says:

0-40. This is the retunr games Fed likes. Djoko needs to imprive first serve here or Fed will break

Daniel Says:

Deep body second serve by Djoko to save another BP. 1 left

Jeez Says:

It’s almost Federer playing nice not to use SABER (15-40)

Daniel Says:

Should have attacked this second serve. Awful miss

Daniel Says:

Djoko hot a dificult shot after that low slice

Daniel Says:

5 BP this game.

Jeez Says:

4th wasted

Now 5th

LAST OPPURTUNITY

jalep Says:

Oh hee hee…Daniel. It’s still between you and Eric, depending on which guy wins … me, I’ll settle for 2nd or 3rd in the tennis-x bracket challenge this time.
Eric is a true belieber
You,…pragmatic as ever ;D

Daniel Says:

What a FH cross courr angle winner. Damm Djoko!!

P Nitin Says:

Slow nervous start by Federer, but he is playing fearless and Djokovic seems vulnerable. First serve percentage down. A+ tennis on display

Daniel Says:

Dioko holds. Fed better hold now because he had a bunch of chances to lead second set.

Jeez Says:

Federer gonna RUE thhose 5BP wasted !!

Lego Says:

Thanks for the updates. Faster than the US open site!

Jeez Says:

Quick hold

mat4 Says:

Novak needs to serve much better.

jatin Says:

Those 5 bP chances :(

kriket Says:

How about those SABR killers

Jeez Says:

LOBBED TWICE IN A ROW

Okiegal Says:

Has Novak been practicing tactics regarding the SABR?? Me thinks he has!!

Daniel Says:

Wow, 2 amazing lobbys back to back after SABR. Djoko os zoning.

jatin Says:

WOW
Novak lobed ROger 2 times.. Amazing play

jatin Says:

Fed is playing well now. Should continue his aggressive return game

Jeez Says:

And Djokovic serving @ 44% against Federer 67%

After 3-2..

jatin Says:

Roger leads 3-2
Hope he can get a break this time

FedExpress Says:

Oh u r here ;)

This is painful

Jeez Says:

I think the CROWD calling SABER has actually removed surprise element doing harm to Federer than help him!!

Jeez Says:

INDECISION !!

Jeez Says:

Or Federer just wants to take it to

TIE BREAK ???

jatin Says:

FEd leads 4-3

mat4 Says:

Novak lost his composure, and makes too many UE. Let’s hope it will change.

FedExpress Says:

Fed needs the break. And that pronto

Jeez Says:

SABER !! Works best in

TIE BREAK

In guess…

FedExpress Says:

Fed will priduce a blip like always after holding comfortably

nole turns into beast mode vs fed at slams

Jeez Says:

SABER !! Works best in

TIE BREAK

I guess…

Jeez Says:

Federer just spraying BH & FH making life easy for Djokovic

FedExpress Says:

I hate this. Movement just awefull

3 gs finals list to nole .dishusting

jatin Says:

Good hold

mat4 Says:

Very close and tense match. Novak doesn’t serve well in this second set. Let’s hope it will change.

jalep Says:

Yeah, have to think Fed would not have over-played a couple of those points playing anyone other than Novak, well maybe Rafa but I doubt it here at US Open. But Fed gets too excited about it – it’s the guy on the other side of the net makes him goof an easy shot.

Nitin Says:

Cmon Roger, rise to the occasion. First serve

Jeez Says:

Good play

Nitin Says:

Djokovic still going to be broken this game

Jeez Says:

BAD VOLLEY

:-/

jalep Says:

See that was mental from Federer – could have won that point but brain freeze.

Jeez Says:

SABER

DEUCE!!

jalep Says:

Then Nole goofs.

J-Kath Says:

Daniel – Get real.

FedExpress Says:

Federer is an idiot.
fail.smash

jalep Says:

What a shot Nole!!! in the corner.

Nitin Says:

Cmon deuce

Jeez Says:

Federer seems to play good @ BAD moments & bad in GOOD moments!!!

jalep Says:

qst serve needed here

Markus Says:

Federer seems totally unprepared as to what Djokovic can do.

Jeez Says:

CROWD willing

Federer

FedExpress Says:

I see it coming
nole wwill win this set

Jeez Says:

RIGHT HERE

@ Game point

But not @ SET point???

Jeez Says:

Okay

Time to

REDEEM

Tom Says:

I didn’t realize Roger was playing in Basel. Bunch of poor sports the USO crowd. Great shot and they boo him. Nice!

FedExpress Says:

Another set point

i am dying

Jeez Says:

Yikes!!!

That MISS GONNA HURT!!!

Daniel Says:

Fed lost the match in this FH long. he would have briken to win second set and start serving third. How could he miss that shot.

FedExpress Says:

This is too much

fed u idiot what are u doing

RZ Says:

Listening to US Open Radio. Sounds like Fed is not converting on his break point chances (as usual)

Jeez Says:

AGAIN good play

Not RIGHT TIME!!!

jalep Says:

Omg again…Federer had a chance to take it an skunked the awful forehand easy winner. Mental oops..

Fed able to bring it back to deuce…..

Daniel Says:

What did I do J-Kath?!

FedExpress Says:

That forehand miss decided the match

Markus Says:

Ball set up for an easy shot to take the set and Federer missed it.

jalep Says:

Missed too many chances – had quite a few, did Fed.

Brings it back to deuce again though!!

Daniel Says:

Fed can’t play 2 or 3 great points in a row. Another deuce, 13 minutes game

Jeez Says:

YET AGAIN…..rrrr

Tired of this…

Daniel Says:

Djoko holds. Great match.
Fed better hold to at least guarantee a tiebreak

jalep Says:

Advantage Nole…again

drumroll

Novak holds. That was huge.

Markus Says:

It’s over.

FedExpress Says:

Gsm nole

FedExpress Says:

This brrak is so prediczabel

Markus Says:

I’m switching sides. Federer has blown his chances. He looks scared. Go Nole! Get your 10th.

jalep Says:

Mirka…aw. saw a tear there on her cheek? or eyes watering for some reason.

jatin Says:

Gutsy hold by roger.
Still couldn’t believe he missed that open forehand which could have given him that 2nd set

mat4 Says:

There is still a lot to play. This match is far from over.

FedExpress Says:

Fed deserves this set

but that fh miss was unrral

kriket Says:

Federer is getting grinded down. The longer this goes on the tougher it gets for him. Even if he wins the second set, it doesn’t get any easier as the match progresses.
No easy points here.

FedExpress Says:

That set took already so much out of fed

Jeez Says:

Not to be..

Markus Says:

I couldn’t believe that Federer can be playing thus poorly compared to how he did in all his earlier matches.

Jeez Says:

15-30

15-40

2 SET POINTS

FedExpress Says:

I am going crazy

wtf

jatin Says:

ROGERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Purcell Says:

Rog as tight as a drum. Appeared nervous from the go get.
Oops…..gets set two.

Daniel Says:

Wow, what a BH killer shot out of nowhere. Fed takes second set. Djoko was tense in 2 consecutive games. What a match!! Another great one by these two.

Nitin Says:

The masterclass just started 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-1 Roger Federer

Nirmal Kumar Says:

This could turn out to be like the Wimby, where Roger might get gassed out in the 3rd and 4th set. He has to expend so much energy in the 2nd set and is already looking worn out.

This is the age factor which cannot be turned away.

Daniel Says:

Fed was the better playee through second set, created more chances and Djoko had amazing defense shots when under pressure. But made 3 UE in last game showing he was tense. Third set defines the match now. Fed needs to win it to have a chance.

FedExpress Says:

Insane. Fully deaerved

but how much enegry has he lefr

Bob Lewis Says:

I have nothing against Federer, legend of the sport. But this isn’t fair play anymore…not his fault at all. This crowd is dirty.

Jeez Says:

Increadably it’s the BASELINE game not his SABER that

Won Roger that SET 2!!!

Daniel Says:

The quicker the games the better for Federer. That 14 minutes game already took too much from him.

jatin Says:

Proud of roger for fighting so hard… Really inspirational

mat4 Says:

I just can’t watch any more. Will just follow the score. Novak’s serve was abysmal. I hope that he will change something, but rather not watching it.

Daniel Says:

This could be like Wawa match where Fed was playing greater as the match progressed. But Djoko is playing great as well.

Daniel Says:

Another SABR point won.

Jeez Says:

BB’s Face!!!

Jeez Says:

Not the 2nd won!!

Daniel Says:

Fed clearly attacking on returns now. He doesn’t want to stay far back anymore.

J-Kath Says:

Now too tired to remember – seemed important at the time – now it don’t mean a thing –

Jeez Says:

One became won !!!

FedExpress Says:

Fed missed a chance here to put doubt into.noles mind

Daniel Says:

This set is going more the way Fed wants, quick points, ultra agressive play

jatin Says:

Fed continue to serve like that Please

Jeez Says:

One became won !!!

My bad

jalep Says:

Federer double faults… and then his one long

Novak looking to break here!!

Daniel Says:

Damm Fed, from 40-15 now BP.

Jeez Says:

Not again

Broken from 40-15

FedExpress Says:

Oh no. After 40-15 deuce

Daniel Says:

Wellhe was playing so fast that suddenly this game was lost fast with a bunch of misses. Djoko to serve with an ealry break.

jatin Says:

Does the same thing like he did in the wimbledin final.
Blown up the 40-15 lead

jalep Says:

And he gets it! Nole does, the break.

Fed still tight and pressured – should have held there.

van orten Says:

Its plain to see that djoker is taking advantage of feds chancewasting tonite …40:15 and break djoker ..out of the blue …damn

Jeez Says:

This match is like

GOOD-BAD-GOOD…..etc from either player & not simultaneous

GOOD-GOOD from both @ the same time….

:-/

FedExpress Says:

Thos is just like the wimbldom finals

after winning the fiurth set in 2014 and the 2nd in 2015 he cant jeep the momentum and gets broken after being 40-15 up

game over

Markus Says:

From shaky to overconfident, Roger is just playing very inconsistently. Almost brainless tennis.

Jeez Says:

Would Djokovic return the

FAVOUR ??

Doesn’t seem to be

jalep Says:

Novak DF’s and hits the next point long/wide.
Makes it 30=30 with a great serve.
Hits a winner but miss one long
deuce…

Jeez Says:

Threat of

SABER

works better for Federer

NOW

than the actual thing

2 DOUBLEFAULTS!!!

jalep Says:

Bhdtl shot great from Nole and…
Double faults. ^%i% hits one wide.

Bp Federer…
ace needed

kriket Says:

Well now I wish Đoko wins if nothing else but in spite of the audience. So annoying!

Ahfi Says:

I agree with you, FedExpress. Too much time/energy spent on a couple of Djoker’s games trying to break him. Looks like Djoker himself is tired too. I think match should have been postponed to tomorrow. I know Fed just broke back but this thing will go on for too long.

Daniel Says:

Fed breaks back. Dioko also not serving great and Fed putting all returns on court. Back at serve.

Jeez Says:

56 sec GAME!!!

3-2 Federer

Daniel Says:

Love it, 1 minute game. 3-2 Fed.

Nitin Says:

Not brainless, brilliant. Djoker please show up for your schooling. This set RF 6-3 even 6-2

Jeez Says:

Confident GROUNDSTROKES from Fed

Daniel Says:

They are not commanding on serve bar a fee games. 5 aces for Fed and 1 for Djoko. This is low.

Another DF by Djoko, 3 last 2 games. Seems SABR is creating it’s effect.

Nitin Says:

@jeez, against the best of our time! This is a grudge match, make no mistake! Rf has pushed Djoko out of his comfort zone.

FedExpress Says:

From 0-30 30-30

So many wasted chsnces

Jeez Says:

Spoke too soon!!!

Nitin Says:

Fear, the foremost weapon of the gladiator. You can see fear in Djokovics eyes if look carefully

FedExpress Says:

Fed clearly the better player but wasting so many chances

Nitin Says:

I doubt tonight Destiny will be denied, this is RF settling the goat debate, avenging Wimbledon and stamping Authority.

Jeez Says:

SLOPPY!!!

The commentator finally does his job describing this

MATCH !!!

:-)

jatin Says:

Loved the match so far.
Fed hold man
4-4

FedExpress Says:

4-4

Crunch time

RZ Says:

There is already a major upset in this match. Ben Rothenberg thinks that Djokovic’s hair is better than Fed’s (though he picks Eva Asderaki’s as the best on the court). https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg/status/643233021676490752

Nitin Says:

Good DTL and side to side from Djokovic. There you go, attack that serve. More mistakes from Djokovic. Shoe is on the other foot.

Jeez Says:

Oooooh !!!

40-0

To

DEUCE!!!

jatin Says:

Spoke too soon
40-40

Daniel Says:

Fed leveling a game from 0-40 down. pressure on Djoko.

Fed won more points so far and have better stats overall
BP Fed

Tennisfan Says:

This match is so dynamic! Thanks to both players for such an entertaining match. Still don’t know who will win (although I think Nole still has the edge)

Jeez Says:

Phooooo!!!

GOOD-GOOD-GOOD& BAD play

@ the wrong time!!!

FedExpress Says:

Bp wasted again

boah. This killing me

jatin Says:

Bp
Comonnnnm fed

Nitin Says:

Create more, create more! Finally war has arrived at Djokovics doorsteps.

Jeez Says:

TENSE

SHOTS THERE!!!

FedExpress Says:

Another bp

i cant. Will die today

Daniel Says:

Fed left a short ball when he was on offense.

But overall seems Djoko is surviving more, Fed had way tomalley chances, 3-15 in BP

Markus Says:

How many BPs is Roger going to squander?

Jeez Says:

SLOPPY SLOPPY SLOPPY!!!!

Daniel Says:

Well, Fed needs to hold and pressure again, maybe he gets a break as it was in second set. Djoko not holding easy anymore.

Wog Boy Says:

Nole is rattled, this one is Roger’s to lose.

Purcell Says:

B P conversion rearing ugly head again.

FedExpress Says:

Now see fed getting briken

Daniel Says:

This set should go to a tiebreak just for us to have less years in our old days;-) too tight and tense.

Daniel Says:

Oh no, 40-15 to 40-40. Fed needs some serves now

FedExpress Says:

Why so many donaions fed

Daniel Says:

BP for Djoko. Most important point so far.

jalep Says:

Ace saves Federer. But nole follows the next serve with a beauty ROS winner!

BP Nole!

FedExpress Says:

How could fed lose this match will be the question

jalep Says:

Nole to serve for the 3rd set, people…

jatin Says:

Fed self destructed
Novak to serve for the set

Jeez Says:

Fed SUCCUMBS under pressure !!

FedExpress Says:

I cant believe rhos shiiit

I will give up fed nole matches
This mentally weak stuff from fed

Nitin Says:

Break of serve again, RF at it – 3 second serves, 3 sabrs

kriket Says:

Wog Boy I think he made you eat your words right there.
And now if he serves it out, eat em twice

Daniel Says:

And Djoko breaks and will serve for third set. He is winning this on his tenacity. Great fighting abilities for him.

Everytime Djoko broke first Fed broke right after. Let’s how he serves for the set now.

If he holds, can’t see Fed winning 2 more in five. It will require an herculean effort from him and clean his game which didn’t happen the whole match.

They are alternating a lot, some may see it’s not high quality but to e it is all things considered.

van orten Says:

Ok guys this is mental..

Markus Says:

That’s how you deal with a breakpoint. It’s over. Again.

FedExpress Says:

I am switching off.

Bob Lewis Says:

As great a champion as Federer is, he is somewhat of a choker. But Nole has those moments also.

jalep Says:

15 chances to break serve, has Federer had – so says Johnny Mac

Markus Says:

This is not going down as a classic.

Daniel Says:

Short bal by Dkko and Fed attacked, 15-30. Tense moments coming. If Djoko doesn’t use first serves.

Daniel Says:

Yeah, double BP for Fed, 15-40. 3-15 on BP, time to break.

Jeez Says:

This match definitely not for

FAINT HEARTED

but

Those suffering

CONSTIPATION!!!

He he ….

:-)

FedExpress Says:

Fed choked

FedExpress Says:

Mental midget

jalep Says:

Another bp chance Federer – that one saved by NOLE

And… Nole saves it to deuce. phew…

Daniel Says:

Set point Djoko. Fed had a lot of shots last poont, should have attacked the net after a DTL FH

FedExpress Says:

Poo stuff

jalep Says:

3rd set Novak!

Jeez Says:

ASDERAKI!!!

kriket Says:

2-1 Đoko thank you very much

Wog Boy Says:

Roger self destructed in the third, he was better player, Nole was and still is completely rattled.

FedExpress Says:

Congratz nole. Ty fed for self destructing. I am done

jatin Says:

Lost opportunities. Can fed fight back ??

Daniel Says:

Guys, Fed splaying word number 1 with 11straight finals and 4 Slams finals this year. And he loves Hard Court.

No shame for Fed losing here. Of course he could have taken more his chances but he knows who he is playing against and both are tight on several ocasions.

kriket Says:

How about that Wog Boy, who’s rattled now you think?

mat4 Says:

Didn’t watch that set, and Novak won… I am still with you, but more dead than alive.

kriket Says:

lol if Novak is rattled, then Roger is crushed

van orten Says:

Geeeeez what a waste of opportunities..more winners more aces ..more first serves..more breakpoints…and who wins yeah right ..the counterpuncher…laugh my a#% offf..this is not mental..just fates cruel hand sting..

Markus Says:

You know who I feel saddest for? Edberg. He has done a remarkable job to improve Roger’s game but Roger throws it all away when it matters. I have a feeling he’ll quit as his coach after this year.

Jeez Says:

3/17 BP conversion from

FEDERER. !!!

jalep Says:

Will Federer crumble in the 4th?
Has to be said Fed had his chances in the 3rd set to break. Nole was clutch at times and at other times Fed tight and muffed it.

Do or die time.

Tennisfan Says:

Ok I’m pretty sure Djokovic will win :(. Good effort by Fed though and congrats to Nole

Bob Lewis Says:

It’s no time to give up. Nole keep fighting if he lost the 3rd set. What kind of mentality is this, from the Fed support?

Daniel Says:

And there is a metro in saving 14 out of 17 BP”s regardless if your opponent missed a few of those.

Jeez Says:

4-10 conversion for Djokovic

BP as I type

Purcell Says:

Downhill all the way now. Roger’s gone back to head down, resigned mode.

Jeez Says:

Make that 5/12

It’s nearing the end….

van orten Says:

It’s hard to see the attacking player not getting rewarded. That’s tennis. Hats off djoker for being so tough to beat

Daniel Says:

Wow, what a Djoko return like by Fed.

Daniel Says:

Nice volleys, have to go to net Fed, only way.

Daniel Says:

Can’t miss this FH. He missed to many FH when trying to attack that corner.

2-0 Djoko. Fed will need to hold and wait for another chance, maybe Djoko gives a few second serves, but he can’t be broken again

Nitin Says:

Not done yet! But Rf hanging tough. Cmon get the break back. Just one break down

Daniel Says:

Djoko returning some impossible serves.

Markus Says:

There’s no digging out of this hole now. Good tournament, terrible last match, Roger. Djokovic discombobulates him. To think that Novak is not even playing his best tennis. This has been an extremely disappointing finals. Congratulations Novak on your 10th. May you have many more, like 16 total. Goodnight everyone.

Daniel Says:

2-1 Djoko. 4 more holds and he gets Double Digit. 4 more chances for Fed to try level this up.

Jeez Says:

Federer has himself to blame

SQUANDERING

All those BP chances!!!

jatin Says:

It’s not over until its over guys.
I still hate faith in roger.

mat4 Says:

Quality wise, they didn’t play that bad one against the other for a long time. This match is not good for the nerves.

Now, Novak has to finally find this improved serve and to put pressure on Fed. Not sure if he will be able to do it. Hope so.

Daniel Says:

Wow, what a sht by Djoko,FH DTL winner.

Rick Says:

Fed won’t win Grand Slam with this age!

mat4 Says:

The stakes are so high for both players — a different place in history for both.

Rick Says:

He could beats Soderling Version 2 at the Grand Prix event. But not in a Slam!

Daniel Says:

Great point by Fed, play 40 more like this

Daniel Says:

This judge is imperious today, She got everything right.

Daniel Says:

Djoko playing more freely, more winners, going more for his shots. He would have to get tense and Fed play an amazing return game to have a chance to break.

jatin Says:

Fed please use your net play and SABRR.
It cant be over like this. You still have 3 more chances.
Comin roger. Comon You can do it man

Ahfi Says:

Goodnight all. I think Fed has done his best. I am encouraged that he actually had those break chances. Djoker will have the win today even though I would not be surprised to find out tomorrow morning that Fed won the 4th set and Djoker got the 5th to win it all.

kriket Says:

Comeon Đoko you just have to hold your serves against vintage Fed.

jatin Says:

Another opportunity lost :( :(

Daniel Says:

Fed had a FH he should have went DTL on BP and went long cross court.

Daniel Says:

What a point by Djoko

Daniel Says:

Damm, BP for Djoko. Now time to serve an ace Fed.

Jeez Says:

Average match this with inconsistencies of
GOOD play and horrible play…

consistent thing is Djokovic GOOD on
important points, Federer throws away open opportunities he has
(although credit to Djokovic on actually pressing those issues, but still
weird seeing Fed not find the right shot when it matters)

kriket Says:

serving for the championship thank you very much people. I think we have all the answers. I’ll say it first.

Novak is the GOAT! :)

Nitin Says:

Damn! One last hurrah please Roger Federer!

madmax Says:

jatin,

i just love the fighting spirit of both these guys. So very proud of my man, Fed. All the way. Am bursting.

Daniel Says:

It’s now over.

Djoko showing why he is undisputed #1. Raising his level in final sets once again.

Congrats on #10, Second US Open. Now having 5 Slams outside his best as Nadal. Better than Nadal in AO, Wimby and USO. Sampras and Nadal’s 14 seems pretty reachable now.

And Fed, well he will have more chances but he better hope somebody takes Djoko to because with 3 finals lost to him can’t see him beating him in best of 5 again.

mat4 Says:

Nerves wrecking…

Jeez Says:

WIMBLEDON 2014

CHOKE incoming????

Daniel Says:

15-40. It’s alive, it’s alive…LOL

Bob Lewis Says:

Never over until the final point.

van orten Says:

Fed has been very unlucky tonite ..that hurts the most

Daniel Says:

Finally, one break to save a bit of his dignity. 5-3, now hold and test Djoko’s nerve.

Jeez Says:

Federer breaks only

Down 2 breaks !!!

;-)

jatin Says:

At least he breaks

madmax Says:

emily, I am still believing baby!

Come on Fed!

Bob Lewis Says:

Federer’s forehand not reliable enough, overall.

Ben Pronin Says:

It ain’t over till it’s over.

Bob Lewis Says:

I love how Nole continues to get serves back, continuous pressure. Each game.

madmax Says:

you have to hand it to both players, even if you don’t like either one of them. Pure mastery and brilliance from both of them. Sheer power, and dominance by Novak, showing why he is the number 1 player in the world.

Federer, reaching another final in his career. Truly, completely awesome.

jalep Says:

Yes from the looks and emotions on Mirka’s face tonight — this win means a lot to her and likely her man, too. But they have to remember: isn’t 17 enough already? Federer has been brilliant really.

Respect to Federer – he held bravely.

Jeez Says:

CHOCKING strike again???

Daniel Says:

Yeah, he holds. Djoko to serve for the match once again. Now he will feel all the pressure. Tense moments, what a match.

Love the drama and this momentum swings.

madmax Says:

If Fed is going to take this to a fifth set, then awesome, if not, then still awesome.

jalep Says:

His forehand was not vintage Federer tonight.

Bob Lewis Says:

Yes, Federer has given it his all. Win or lose, lots to be proud of. Now I hope Nole holds. :)

kriket Says:

Đoko is slowly flushing his breaks down the toilet

van orten Says:

Nole was not necessarily the better player but definitely the luckier …but that s ok ..it’s tennis

Daniel Says:

15-30, OMG

Daniel Says:

Wow!! What a lucky return by Fed\
15-40 Can he do it?!

Jeez Says:

Ala

WIMBLEDON 2014

Memories ….

kriket Says:

It’s almost as if the match is fixed to go to the fifth

Ben Pronin Says:

I don’t see how this can be considered a choke. All of the sudden Federer is playing super aggressive and not missing anything. Not sure what Djokovic could do differently.

madmax Says:

jalep, this is the life with Federer.

Let’s see if he can dig really deep.

Jeez Says:

What the Hell!!!!

van orten Says:

Say what you want nole is not the better player tonite…but one has to win …

Daniel Says:

Courage, BH DTL winner

jalep Says:

ajde nole, s’il vous plais…

Jeez Says:

BACK HAND DOWN THE LINE!!!!!

3rd BP

Jeez Says:

EXCRUTIATING!!!!

Daniel Says:

MP Djoko, what a giant.

kriket Says:

championship point no1

Bob Lewis Says:

Wow, Nole is really lucky. How many break chances has Federer left on the table in his career? vs. Nole and Nadal? Ouch. This is it??

kriket Says:

AND HE DOES IT!

Nadal Says:

well, 10 is far behind than 14

Wog Boy Says:

Yeeeeeeeessssss

kriket Says:

Congrats to all the fellow Novak fans. Commisserations to Fed fans, he had a great run, but there’s something about him playing Novak, he seems mentally unfit to play him.
He’s got the game but simply cannot execute

RZ Says:

Throughout the match I had to keep telling myself to stop getting my hopes up for Fed as it would be sure to end in disappointment. And sure enough…

Congrats to Nole and his fans, though. What a year for him. Incredible.

madmax Says:

Congratulations to Novak! You have to hand it to him!

There is no such luck in sport. Pure preparation and self-belief. This man has it all.

World Number 1. Deservedly so.

Federer, we are proud of you, for the fight, for taking us to the edge again.

Keep going for as long as you want, as you can, we will be here to support you all the way.

Love Federer.

Daniel Says:

Very happy for Djoko to get back to winning USO title again, he was due for a long time. Now with 7 HC Slams tying Sampras and second only to Fed’s 9. another year with 3 Slams, soon to be second in GOAT debate or even challenge Fed, remarkable.

Jeez Says:

The match

4/23 BP CONVERSION !!! For Federer

madmax Says:

kriket Says:
Congrats to all the fellow Novak fans. Commisserations to Fed fans, he had a great run, but there’s something about him playing Novak, he seems mentally unfit to play him.
He’s got the game but simply cannot execute

September 13th, 2015 at 10:42 pm

kriket, not the case. Federer beat Novak on hard courts this year. Their games match up well. He is certainly no mental midget against novak, that is for sure. Novak is just the better player, and Roger needs that to keep the flame burning. If he won everything, then where’s the competition?

I am one happy Fed fan. Really am. Very proud of Roger.

mat4 Says:

The better player lost.

The greater fighter won.

Bravo Nole!

kriket Says:

It’s really funny to hear the commentators now talk about how Fed had everything against him coming into this match, when prior to the match it was all Fed this Fed that.

jalep Says:

Aw, tears in Mirka’s eyes again :(

But yessssssss……Nole has #10.

Feel bad for Fed fans who had so much hope – and it was close – even to the last points, Fed had a chance to break and take it to a tb in the 4th. The forehand, his marvelous forehand of his prime went missing when he needed it.

Bravo Novak! Tough to win at US Open. He now has 2 of them!! Federer has 5.

mat4 Says:

Novak is now assured to finish first in the rankings for the 4th year, and to be the ITF world champion for the fifth time. And he’s at number 10. Let’s hope that there will be more, although nothing is given.

No one can’t deny now that Novak isn’t among the top 5 of the open era.

kriket Says:

madmax I was mainly meaning the GS finals, not the odd best of 3 masters. That’s where Federer repeatedly fails to deliver, and only coming after the flawless run throughout the tournament

Bob Lewis Says:

US Open Champion again! Against all odds, really. Seriously, not many people could have won against that kind of atmosphere. Nole is as tough as they come. Must be frustrating for Fed that so many serves come back to him. Djoker may never get respect and love he deserves, but hopefully one day he will.

Federer will always be a great champion. The losses hurt, but it’s just sport. Not the end of the world. Nobody lasts forever, Nole’s time will end also. Someone else will take his place. That’s life.

Skeezer Says:

Somehow some way the stats didn’t work for elina. Doh!

Congrats to Nole, although liked you a little less for your celebration out burst in the first, I mean seriously? Personality insecurity maximus( and I thought Rafa insidious fist pumps were bad ). Looked like a Gorilla not getting the attention you wanted in an empty jungle. You did not get any additional fans.

Fed? Great effort @34. You took a set off a guy in his prime. Too bad you couldn’t have played him in your prime years. Ahh, se la vi, its all gravy baby. 17. Peoples Champion.

kriket Says:

Federer gets yet another plate for Mirka to serve coffee on.

mat4 Says:

@kriket:

It was noticeable already after the first set by the voice of the commentators.

The only one that didn’t see Fed as the big favourite was Tignor, although he was also in doubts.

Novak didn’t serve well, it’s clear, and he was lucky tonight. But he fought for this luck, and he deserved it.

Fed cemented his place in the history of the game, a Novak wrote a new page in his own part. Let’s hope that there will be more for both.

van orten Says:

Stop the age card bullshit ..this tonite had Nothing to do with age..nole was luckier ..period.

Tom Says:

Bravo No1e!!!!!! Браво Мајсторе!!!!! Take that USO crowd!!!!! Bwahahhahahhahah!!!!

kriket Says:

Skeezer, Novak not getting any additional fans? Really? And just when we were thinking that they were gonna quit rooting for Fed and start rooting for Novak.

Comeon, Novak gave up long ago on winning “additional” fans on these courts.

He has many fans in countries like India and the likes, but the Grand Slams all play in the western world, even 3 of them in the anglo-saxon world.
So it’s not quite fair, it seems like everyone loves Fed when it’s really only in these western venues that it’s the case.

kriket Says:

van orten, again with the luck? How many more times he has to beat Federer and how many more slams to win for you to quit attributing it to luck?

It’s stupid.

madmax Says:

Something very strange has happened with all the posts all at once becoming jumbled. Very odd.

Skeezer, yes, it’s all gravy, but how wonderful it would have been for Roger to grab this slam, at the very last moment, it seemed possible.

A great match however. Always on the edge of my seat when he plays. Waiting for that “last slam”. Ridiculous really. He can play as long as he wants, will still watch him, win or lose!

Tom Says:

Sneezer, Twitter lit up on No1e’s side because they couldn’t believe those NY snobs. BTW, Rafa, hear those footsteps?

Wog Boy Says:

Thanks Nole for shutting up that NASTY crowd, you don’t have to win anyone of those from that crowd, you have your fans in the other parts of world, NY crowd sucks!!

Ben Pronin Says:

Skeeze, I didn’t like those celebrations either. Over the top and unnecessary. But this crowd was terrible. Just horrible. And at some point, you can’t blame him for getting agitated. Luckily he kept himself in check after that outburst. But that crowd was just so terrible. I’m embarrassed for NY and for our sport. Federer is the classiest of guys and his fan-base has become quite rabid in a classless way.

Congrats to both players. Federer at 34 making back-to-back slam finals. He didn’t need to win them to cement his GOAT status. And I truly believe he’ll make more finals and, if he’s not facing Djokovic or Nadal, he’ll win number 18.

Djokovic, finally, after 3 years, replicated his 2011 feat. The Major triple. I believe he’s the only the second player besides Federer to do this multiple times in the Open Era. Incredible stuff. Nothing but respect for both players for elevating the game to incredible heights.

This wasn’t the greatest match, kinda blew up hype-wise. But great stuff, nonetheless.

roy Says:

federer will likely end up with losing records to nadal and djokovic, especially in slam matches, but still be the ‘GOAT!’.

just bad match ups, see.

Bob Lewis Says:

Looking towards the future, Nole can win another Australian in about 4 or 5 months. If he plays in another 10 slam finals, I don’t think he minds seeing Federer each time. :)

In all seriousness, I think it’s become clear that it’s not going to get any easier for Federer to get the big wins against Djokovic. Federer is going to need some younger blood to help him keep his all-time slam record. Otherwise, you never know…maybe Nole will break it one day!

Skeezer Says:

Hey gang, that NY crowd that u called ‘”nasty” are tennis fans, they paid to see Tennis. Call them what u may but they are fans just like any other fans. The NY tennis fans are loyal, loud intelligent and proud. They show up and support the game. Don’t hide behind TV screens. Why don’t u research and tell us all what was the crowd attendance? Biggest ever.

Nithish Says:

Congrats to Novak on his 10th overall slam, 3rd this year & his 2nd US open

Tennisfan Says:

I’m not sure about Nole winning 7 tbh. Look at Fed and Rafa, it’s quite clear how much your dominance drops with age. Everyone was predicting the same for Nadal as they’re doing for Djokovic, but sometimes you have to consider those things realistically.
Anyways that’s a great achievement by him to reach double slam digits. The fact that he’s had to do that by beating Nadal and Roger for many titles is a testament to his incredible skill and talent.

Wog Boy Says:

@11:08,

lousy post, same as NY crowd!

elina Says:

Fedfans in the crowd cheering after first serve faults were completely classless.

Nole outclassed them all in the end. Such heart.

I guess the great debate goes on.

And then there were three.

Congrats Nole fans!!!

Idemoooooo!!!!!

van orten Says:

The stats are surreal

Wog Boy Says:

Thanks elina.

Colin Says:

Well, not bad for someone who’s been described in certain quarters as a “pusher”.

mat4 Says:

A great article for Fedfans and Nolefans. Nolefans especially.

Ahfi Says:

Sorry guys, I had to get out of bed – couldn’t sleep. I am glad it is over. Congrats, Nole. I AM STILL VERY PROUD OF FEDERER. I hope spectators got their money’s worth. Nobody should be ashamed of this match. Federer did his best – just could not take advantage of all those break point chances. Nole was struggling too but he is a fighter as we all know.

At the beginning of this year, I predicted on this site that Djoker was going to do well this year – can’t quite remember why I said so but it could have been in comparison to Nadal. What I want to say now is, I do not believe next year will be quite the same for him. I can’t think of who might come up on top next year (Olympic year) but I believe Fed will win one slam. In fact, I believe next year’s 4 slams will go to 4 different people. (just as an aside – with the women, Serena will definitely catch up with Steffi). Some days ago, I think the evening that Fed beat Isner, one of Fed’s fans came up with some words of adulation that I have never heard before (LOL) on Fed’s website – these words have stayed with me since. I leave Fed’s fans with the same words so they can sleep in peace: ‘And on the 8th day, God created Roger Federer’. I believe him!! Good night. Please nobody waste their time in attacking me – not necessary….

Ben Pronin Says:

The NY crowd is definitely not intelligent…

Daniel Says:

Can you imagine if Djoko wins AO next year?! He’ll enter RG going for 4 in a row and 12th. And this time he will have a better shot because Nadal seems past his prime (maybe he’ll have another resurgence on clay next year), Fed sure won’t beat him on clay so that will leave Murray or Stan to stop him. Because any of the other won’t win 3 sets on clay off him.

Already 5 AO, 3 Wimbledon and 2 USO. 4 Finals in Wimbledon, 6 USO and 3 RG for a total of 13 Finals outside his best Slam and 5 titles.

Nadal has 5 Wimbledon finals, 3 USO and 3 AO with 5 titles: 2-2-1 respectively. 5 titles out of 11 finals.

Fed outside Wimbledon has 17 finals, 5 USO, 4 AO and 1 RG, 10 titles out of 17 finals.

One more win for Djoko outside AO and he will be second to Sampras 7 outside Wimbledon and Federer only.

Now what is missing is RG title and I hope he gets it next year or the next. Having won 6 of the last 6 Slams and 4 of the last 4 finals he sure is the man to beat in any of Slams.
Next year he could tie Federer with 5 Year End #1, surpass 200 weeks as #1 and if he wins WTF this year for his 5, tie Fed for 6 as well.

What a great last 52 weeks for him, currently holds 9 big titles: 3 Slams, 1 Slam final, WTF, 5 Masters, 2 Masters final. Only final of the big tourneys he played he doesn’t have is Shangai. And he can revert that pretty soon if he reaches Shangai finals in 1 month. Outstanding!!

Skeezer Says:

“Nole outclassed them all in the end. Such heart.”
Yeah he also outclassed himself with a crotch thrust celebration during the match. Class. Woo hoo. Gorilla move. Thats the way to win over the crowd.
Guess I am jaded after watching the ladies final.
Vinci! Class….

Daniel Says:

Sorry, …having won 4 of the last 6 Slams….

danica Says:

Ahfi,
not necessary indeed and would be stupid. Roger played beautifully and fought valiantly. I am glad Novak won but hey, I can just hope he has Roger’s results when he is 34. Roger is truly unique and nobody can take that from him.

Congrats Nole one more time, and congrats to all your fans worldwide. Too happy to say anything else now :).

Bob Lewis Says:

It’s fair to ask how many people in that crowd tonight are actually tennis fans? Do they play tennis? Not necessarily. They just show up for the final because it’s the hip thing to do. I doubt many of them care about the smaller tournaments.

danica Says:

Elina, do I know you? ;) ;)

Wog Boy Says:

We obviously have some sore loser here who can’t handle third lost GS in a row, tenth lost final altogether (plus one Wo), pity, I thought they are better than that.

Wog Boy Says:

^^ GS final

Daniel Says:

I will be very surprised if Djoko doesn’t win at least 2 Slams next year. HE is favorite in all he plays, Fed is getting older by the day (and if he can’t beat Djoko in Wimbledon nor USO) he won’t in AO or RG; Nadal haven’t reach even a semis after his RG 2014 win, Stan and Murray seems the ones who cud trouble Djoko more but Stan is vulnerable to other players.

Raonic Kei and Grigor went backwards. Cilic can’t beat Novak. Berdych and Ferrer seems on their last season as top 10.

The young ones are still too young, imager and with the stamina and fitness level required, nor the mental state also. So very few can beat Novak and even so will require a unique performance.

Wawa was the only one this year and he showed hands down the best performance of the year, on the biggest stage.

Next year depending on how Djoko perform plus Olympics he can make a serious move in GOAT debate, top 3, 4.

To me he already is better than Borg, 1 more win and he leaves no doubt. Laver was in transition phase so will be hard to compare, but even so, 1 more win and ties him at worst.

Suddenly the aim is 14. When / if he reaches there than he can evaluate if reaching Roger is feasible / possible.

As he said himself his target is winning Slams, putting himself in position for finals and give himself a chance. Now he is 10/18 for 56%, 2 more finals won and he is at 60%. Fed right now is at 63% with 17/27.

Tom Says:

Sneezer, the New York fans are bandwagonners and spoiled snobs. All the celebrities hang out with Roger and it’s not a surprise they root for him. Your boy may be a little concerned in 2-3 years when his 17 may be threatened. And I hope No1e keeps pounding his chest just to tick snobs like yourself off. Hahahhaha!!!!!

elina Says:

danica, do you? or don’t you. ;)

Congrats to your guy.

He has so much heart and class to beat Roger who is playing the best tennis of his career this fortnight incredibly and shutting down the classless fans in the crowd.

He has definitely entered the great G*** debate!

elina Says:

WB, I believe jaded is the term he prefers.

bojana anel Says:

Congrats to both players, and love for all Nole,s fans.

For S.A.B.R there is: N.A.R.S.A.

Bravo Nole.Samo napred…..

Ahfi Says:

Oh, people. Do not waste energy on fans. Let’s just thank God that there are people willing to buy these expensive tickets. Even though we can see these fans, its pretty much the same as people hiding behind their computers and spewing out venom from time to time. And also, Djoker has gone through this in NY before, right? Maybe, a couple of times in the past? He seemed very angry during the presentation interview or whatever. After winning this battle? I think that anger was probably about what could have been, because he did struggle too, and he knew that. He probably already had in his mind that the crowd was going to cost him the match and so he could not take that out of his head even after he won!! That’s my take. Relax and enjoy your win, Novak. Even Roger managed some smiles!!

jane Says:

thanks for the congrats peeps. really appreciated. :)

jalep Says:

Elina

Have a look at mat4’s link on the Federer vs Djokovic – who’s the pick thread. It’s interesting…seriously.

tennisfansince76 Says:

can’t believe i missed the match. the rain delay did me in. i had to go t the office before dark. and then my nephew showed up and i watched him. should have taken care of it yesterday. oh well i spared myself the disappointment. i followed the match on slamtracker and here. congratulations to all Nole fans. especially @Mat4. it sounds like the match stretched your nerves to the limit.
but to all those that are pencilling in Novak for 18 slams beware. the last slams are always the hardest.

jalep Says:

jane – he made it :D Congrats Novak Djokovic – we love you!!

And I agree with Ben Pronin again. NYC fans are definitely not intelligent tennis fans. They do however have money to spend – so that’s good for tennis that they fill up the place.

FO hasn’t been too nice for Rafa at times but it didn’t stop him from biting 9 trophies there. Nole has more US Open titles in him — if he wants them and goes for it.

Skeezer Says:

elina…. Whos jaded? Lol…From a fed stat promoter to a Novak lover. And you predicted Fed would win all along based on “stats”. Lol. Please… Its ok…you’ll get over it. And now It seems Rafa is your has been, no?

Seriously, congrats to Nole fans, 10 Slams. He now can truly contest his records against Rafa, and has claims to be a better all around player than Rafa. One day he may have a chance to claim an equal to Feds all time records. Maybe. One day.
He is the best defensive wall player to ever play the game.

Wog Boy Says:

#17 is not realistic, but few more, yes. I am more than happy with 10, just last year after he lost FO, quite a few of us concluded that “six” is a nice number and hey, we have “ten” now, am I right jane?

Ahfi Says:

Right now, seriously, it looks like it’s only Roger who is holding the fort (on one side), and Djoker on the other. Now, where is everybody else? Wawa and Murray show up occasionally. Can you all imagine if Fed had folded up and retired like people were literally instructing him to do about 3 years ago? Now, I am going to make the ‘Maria Sharapova’ desperate call when she called on the ladies (before she, Sharapova, retired at the beginning of the tournament – LOL), to try and stop Serena from reaching her goal of calendar slam. I am calling on all young(?) male prospective “grand-slammers” to get fit before they come back to the tour next year! It’s time to take the fight to Djoker ! You ‘young’ ones have been dormant for too long! Fed is tired of holding the fort! Let’s go – Raonic, Dmitrov etc. etc. What are the other names? Common! And please come back, Nadal..

Wog Boy Says:

BTW, why do I have a feeling that Mirka is expecting another set of twins, I saw her belly when she was jumping from her seat and it looks like ..well, pregnant women belly.

jalep Says:

Amen to that 11:58 pm post Ahfi!

jane Says:

yes, but i think it might be the generation after them (grigor et al) to really grab the mantle?

cheers, jalep. hope the champagne and all was very good and the party fun. i forgot to eat until after the match due to nerves. but i’ve just had 2 red truck ales as too late to open wine. :D

kriket Says:

No, you aren’t right Wog Boy, yet again.
Yes, 10 is a nice round number, but I didn’t hear Novak is planning on retiring anytime soon. So how do you figure he stays at #10? It’s not even realistic at this point. It’s more probable that he will win some more slams, than that he wouldn’t.

Therefore I don’t see how you can say that 10 is the number that you’re satisfied with? If he stayed at 10 slams, which is completely unrealistic all things considered, it would’ve meant that either he sustained some major injury, God forbid, or that he outright retired, OR that he quit playing tennis altogether.

None of that is even remotely likely. So no, you’re not right.

danica Says:

Elina, thanks ;)

You were always one of the Rafa fans that were respectful of Nole. Sincerely hope in Rafa’s comeback. He is there already, just a bit more…

kriket Says:

those two last “reasons” being essentially the same, sorry for that mistake, but there’s no reason he would stop at 10 slams.

What I meant to say if he somehow forgot how to play tennis, rather than if he quit…

Wog Boy Says:

kriket,
I didn’t say that “10” is final number, I said that I expect few more but “17” is not realistic to expect, though I wouldn’t mind if Nole proves me wrong;)
Check my post again.

Ahfi Says:

@Wog Boy, you are so funny.. you actually saw a visibly pregnant woman jump up? I hope the imaginary twins are fine!

mat4 Says:

@TF76:

It wasn’t the nerves, but the heart. It just does whatever it wants, and despite all the testing, doctors don’t know why yet.

I am happy that Novak won, but the direction of the conversation here makes me feel uneasy.

First, there was too much hype. Neither Fed, neither Novak were at their best. It’s a long season, and it isn’t easy to peak when you play week in, week out, deep in any of the tournament. This match is far from their WB final in 2014, when the 1st and the 3rd sets were absolutely outstanding.

Then, let’s also notice that they were both nervous like mad dogs biting their tails. Federer is usually able to get loose, but he played far below the level he showed in some previous matches. Novak’s serve was abysmal compared with his average of late. They played great points and made incomprehensible errors. The pressure on both of them was exceptional, and the stakes very high.

Novak’s performance on BP revealed once more that he is a great fighter, but to fend 19 of 23 BP — one also has to have luck. And he was lucky. He fought for that luck, he got it, but still, luck it was.

There was a lot of hype about this match, and now there is of reversed hype. Both times, a cooler head was needed. Federer didn’t play great in the previous rounds — he was virtually untested — and he didn’t deserve to be the favourite. Djokovic also didn’t play well, and his form was slowly slumping. The outcome was open from the beginning, the only thing playing in Novak’s favour being his age and, related to it, the best of 5 format.

On the other side, there isn’t enough hype about the long term meaning of that final. When a 34 years old player manages to challenge to that point one of the best ever to play this game — and for me, taking all in account, especially the stats that I posted twice on this thread, stats that show clearly that the weak era were the 90s when Sampras won his 14 slams, and not Federer’s best years — it consolidates Fed’s legacy as the best ever, and this win consolidates Novak’s legacy.

I also feel that all of you own me an apology: when I posted a few times that Federer was playing as well as ever, I was viciously attacked. Before that match, many of you wrote the same thing and paraphrased my words. Now, humbly recognize that I am the king of everything, that I am always right and you always wrong, touch the floor with your forehead in worship, etc. and perhaps I shall forgive you… or not.

Somebody asked why Federer didn’t made all those changes in his game when he was younger. It’s a process. He started it at the end of 2010, and lost a complete year because of his back. He should have started earlier, but it’s easy to be wise aftermath.

Wog Boy Says:

@Ahfi,
I guess the adrenaline kicked in, she didn’t jump in the next row, just up (her shirt came undone so belly was visible and I wasn’t perving, it was cameraman) and then she sat down, no big deal for possible babies;)

mat4 Says:

Finally:

jane, jalep, WB, kriket, Courbon, Danica, and all the other nolefans here: a lot of joy to share!

Ahfi Says:

LOL, Wog Boy. I understand.

kriket Says:

Come to think of it I don’t know any people who have two set of twins, apart from those who went through in-vitro fertilization.
Getting two sets of twins by natural way of impregnation is nothing short of a miracle.

And yet Wog Boy sees yet another pair! :)

Nirmal Kumar Says:

What a great champion Roger is. Proud to be a fan of such graceful fighter. His legs did not matchup to his Racquet skills. But still kept is as close as possible.

There is a reason why Roger is loved and respected by all. You can’t buy the crowd, you have to earn it. People criticize NY crowd, should also understand the reaction of Wimbledon crowd or pretty much anywhere Roger plays.

Ahfi Says:

@Mat4, let’s face it, some people will never see Fed’s greatness. I have always said, even if Fed ends up at #100 on the rankings, as long as he is still playing and showing passion for the game, I will support him. He is a rare breed. Most people would have retired and said I have enough already. To him, it is about challenging himself and being challenged. Why else would he be trying to improve at this point? He knows what could be facing him at the other side of the net. And yet, he believes. The other time, one of the commentators said one of Fed’s reasons for continuing to play for his kids to continue to see him play at his job. That is simply great. There is nothing to be embarrassed about at all with losses at this point.

Wog Boy Says:

mat4,
Thanks, and agree, it wasn’t highest quality match but it was a battle and better man prevailed.

mat4 Says:

@WB:

I like when Novak plays great tennis… but I also prefer when he wins, even when he plays bad… It was a battle, it’s the right word.

peter Says:

17 is a stretch, he needs to take one slam at a time. 14 is likely.

But I predict he will have a long time at no.1, with no real challengers in sight. 6,7 year end no.1s is quite probable, and with that breaking sampras’ years no.1 and rogers wks no.1 record. Will be arguably the goat even without surpassing fed in slam count.

sienna Says:

I must congratulate the poser. He knows how to win big matches. even against better players he knows ho to beat them.

As for Roger. He is getting closer and wont stop until he wins again.
2016 will be better.

atleast Murray is safely tucked away.

Margot Says:

At least I don’t have to congratulate sienna on her brilliant Mystic Meg abilities.

J-Kath Says:

“at least Murray is safely tucked away” – I’m glad you said that Sienna as every forecast you’ve made has been wrong.

calmdwonplease Says:

hehehe And this one shall be painfully wrong soon enough as well.
How lame was that final for goodness sakes?!
Mystic meg’s crystal ball is about to explode.

calmdwonplease Says:

`even against better players he knows ho to beat them..`

?!?

Novak is FAR better than Federer!
He’s better than everyone right now
How much evidence does a Fed Fan need to accept this fact?
Roger just doesn’t have it anymore and will go down with a negative H2H against both Nadal and Djokovic
Only Andy’s surgery has saved him there,
For now…

elina Says:

jalep, yes I’ve seen that chess rating applied to tennis before and saw a few days ago that Novak had edged our Roger ever so slightly. Yesterday’s colossal win will surely expand his lead over Roger.

But I do question any analysis that would put Nurray on the same level as Sampras and would put Laver at 20. Also, nine of the Top 30 are still active which makes me suspicious that it is skewed unfairly to today’s players.

It is interesting that Novak leads all the greats however!
