ATP Finals Groups: Novak Djokovic = Easy, Andy Murray = Not So Easy
The ATP has just released the groupings for the upcoming Finals event in London which begins on Sunday.
Here are the groups:
John McEnroe Group
Andy Murray
Stan Wawrinka
Kei Nishikori
Marin Cilic
Ivan Lendl Group
Novak Djokovic
Milos Raonic
Gael Monfils
Dominic Thiem
Murray is drawn with two US Open champions plus a US Open finalist. And the other three in his group have played the event before.
Meanwhile, 4-time defending champion Djokovic is the only Grand Slam winner in his group and the only player to have ever won a match at the event, with both Monfils and Theim making their debuts this year. Plus, Djokovic has a perfect record against all three opponents at 23-0 (7-0 v Raonic, 13-0 v Monfils, 3-0 v Thiem). And Raonic is ailing with a quad injury while Monfils is also coming off an injury.
Djokovic, the only player in the field to have reached the final at the event, is seeking a 5th straight ATP Finals titles, 6th overall.
A subplot to the event is the No. 1 race with the winner of the event if it’s either Djokovic or Murray likely taking the No. 1 ranking.
The opening day Sunday schedule features Djokovic-Thiem then in the evening Monfils-Raonic.
On Monday it’s Wawrinka-Nishikori then at night Murray-Cilic.
