Del Potro v Raonic Tonight In Delray Beach; 18-Year-Old Casper Ruud Reaches Rio SFs
Juan Martin del Potro will collide with Milos Raonic tonight in the semifinals at Delray Beach. Yesterday in quarterfinal play, Del Potro posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Sam Querrey.
Raonic needed three sets to defeat Kyle Edmund 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“It’s going to be a big chance for me,” said del Potro. “He’s the favorite and is playing so good, but I want to see how my level is against the top players at this part of the year.”
Del Potro and Raonic have split two meetings, both back in 2013. Del Potro won in Tokyo while Raonic took the contest at his home event in Canada.
“I feel like I’m getting better each match,” said Raonic. “With this constant improvement, I’m feeling positive and like I have a good shot to win the matches ahead of me.”
Del Potro’s hasn’t played a Top 5 player since losing to Kei Nishikori in the Basel quarterfinals.
In the early semifinal, Jack Sock takes on Donald Young who had a Thursday walkover when Steve Darcis had to leave the tournament to tend to his daughter who was undergoing surgery.
In Rio, 18-year-old Casper Ruud advanced to his first ATP semifinal. The Norwegian will meet Pablo Carreno Busta. In the other semi it’s Albert Ramos Vinolas against Dominic Thiem.
Ruud, the son of former ATP star Christian Ruud, is trying to win his first match over a Top 70 player against the 24th-ranked Carreno Busta.
“It’s been an amazing week for me here in Rio and I’m just trying to stay humble. I have no pressure and I’m trying as hard as I can every point,” Ruud said. “It’s been kind of a breakthrough week. I just hope to do well in the following days of course, in following tournaments, just try to keep up my level.”
