Americans Stephens, Collins, Anisimova Lead WTA Tsurenko-Less Acapulco
There will be a heavy American flavor at the WTA event in Mexico this week. Three of the Top 5 seeds are Americans with top seed Sloane Stephens, No. 2 Danielle Collins and No. 5 Sofia Kenin.
Stephens won the title back in 2016 beating Dominika Cibulkova. She’ll open against Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier.
Collins, who stunned the tennis world reaching the Australian Open semifinals, faces off with former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the best first round match.
Teen sensation Amanda Anisimova is also in the field.
Last year, Lesia Tsurenko won her second straight Acapulco title beating Stefanie Voegele. After Fed Cup, Doha and then Dubai, 2-time winner Tsurenko opted to not defend her crown this year!
Projected quarterfinal match-ups: 1 Stephens v 6 Sakkari, 3 Vekic v 8 Konta, 7 Zheng v 4 Buzarnescu, 5 Kenin v 2 Collins.
