Not even Ons Jabeur, winner of her last 11 including Madrid, could slow down Iga Swiatek. The World No. 1 dominated Jabeur rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 victory to successfully defend her Rome title.

Swiatek has now won her last 28 matches and she didn’t drop a set this week and overall has won 42 of her last 43 sets.

“At the beginning of the tournament, I didn’t know it would be possible to keep up the streak and with all the wins,” Swiatek said. “I’m pretty happy I did it really step by step and I just focused on the right things because I think it led to all the success this week.

It’s her fifth straight title and 8th consecutive final win, all without surrendering a set.

“It’s pretty hard to describe it ’cause all these tournaments that I’ve won seem pretty surreal right now,” Swiatek said. “I feel like just continuing the same things that I did before really was the key to that. It’s pretty weird because you may think every tournament, that it takes something more. But I’m pretty happy with my solid game. I was able to just play good and also improve during the tournament.”

She’ll now head to the French Open as the overwhelming favorite to lift another trophy.

“Honestly I’m going to do the same way I’ve done here, also on other tournaments,” Swiatek said. “For sure it’s going to be a little bit harder with all the breaks that we’re going to have between matches. I also like the rhythm that we have on Grand Slams. Again, I’m going to try to do step by step, just think of the next match as I did on these tournaments.

“If I’m going to treat it as any other tournament, I think it’s going to be fine and I’m going to be able to keep it that way.”

After fantastic lead-up, Jabeur will also be among the French favorites.

“Pretty happy with the level I played with,” Jabeur said. “I will just be positive with myself and try to recover in time for the French Open. It’s my main goal.

“It helps me a lot confidence-wise, expectation-wise,” she added. “It helps me be tougher with myself. I need to be in the second week. I need to go above the other results I did in Grand Slams.”

The French Open begins next Sunday.
