Daniil Medvedev Calls UK/Wimbledon Russian Ban Is Unfair
Speaking for the first time on the UK/Wimbledon ban on Russian and Belarussian players, Daniil Medvedev said the policy was “unfair”.
“On the one hand, I can understand it and, on the other, I find it unfair,” Medvedev told TASS.
“This is a delicate situation because it sets a precedent and puts other sports competitions in an uncomfortable position.
“For having discussed it with the ATP, we are, us tennis players, considered in terms of law as independent workers.
“But currently in the United Kingdom, self-employed Russians have the right to work. So, if I have the opportunity to play at Wimbledon, I would be delighted. If not, I would accept it.”
Medvedev has been off the tour since Miami following hernia surgery. The Russian returns today in Geneva where he’ll open his clay season against Richard Gasquet.
“I feel great. Managed to get around I would say two weeks of good practice and one week of full practice,” Medvedev said in Geneva. “[I] decided that it’s going to be good to prepare [for the] French Open, to get some matches here. Some matches, hopefully more than one.”
