Serena Williams Is Back! Will Play Wimbledon Singles!
After a year off the tour and endless speculation over her future, Serena Williams announced today that she’s returning to the game, as early as next week.
“SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there. Let’s Go #renasarmy” Serena posted on Instagram.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion will play doubles with Ons Jabeur at Eastbourne next week and then Wimbledon where the club has already confirmed a wildcard for her.
Now 40, Serena hasn’t played since injuring her hamstring in her Wimbledon first round match a year ago. That was her last match.
The 7-time Wimbledon champion hasn’t won on the grass since her 2016 title, and her last Slam remains the 2017 Australian. She’s come up one match short four times in her bid to match Margaret Court’s 24 Slams.
Serena is also no longer with longtime coach Patrick Mouratoglou who is now with Simona Halep.
No update on sister Venus who turns 42 on Friday.
