Fritz Rallies Past McDonald To Make Delray Beach Final, Will Face Kecmanovic
Top seed and American No. 1 Taylor Fritz moved into the Delray Beach final coming from 4-1 down in the second to defeat countryman Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 7-6(8-6).
The 25-year-old Fritz pounded pounded nine aces, won 34/41 (83%) first serve points to even his series with McDonald at 2-all.
“I feel really good. I said it after my last match: I’m just playing better and better each match since I’ve been here,” Fritz said to the ATP. “I love the moment, I love competing in finals, so I know I’ll play a good game tomorrow.”
Fritz jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match before McDonald worked his way back in.
“I just came out with a lot of energy. I was being really aggressive in the beginning. Any time I got some time for the ball to settle, I was ripping it,” he added. “And then it got a little closer, went down the break in the second. Maybe got away from that a little bit. In the end, just tried to get that back, continued being aggressive like I was in the beginning.”
Into his 10th career ATP final, Fritz will bid for a 5th title against 4th-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic who won a tight one over former champion Radu Albot of Moldova in three sets 7-6(10-8), 3-6, 6-2.
Kecmanovic makes his 3rd career final. He is seeking his 2nd career title. But Fritz has the head-to-head winning two of three meetings.
