Sinner To Good For De Minaur, Wins First Masters Title Taking Toronto
Jannik Sinner is finally a Masters champion. The 22-year-old Italian collected the biggest title of his young career besting Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the Canadian Open Masters in Toronto.
“It feels amazing,” said Sinner. “Great result, one I can share with all my team, with the hard work we put in. With all the people that are close to me, even if they’re not here physically. So very happy about the whole tournament. And, yeah, as I said it’s a really good and great moment in my career.”
After a series of breaks in the opening set, Sinner broke the Australian top win the first. Then got another one at 2-1 and that was all he needed to win his 8th career title. And it’s even more sweet after coming up short in his two previous Masters finals, both in Miami.
“I think everything together today I was doing better than in the previous two finals in the Masters series,” he said. “I was very focused about my game. What I had to do and I felt like I was executing it in the right way. So I’m very happy.”
Sinner continues is mastery over De Minaur improving to 5-0 against the 24-year-old dropping just one set.
“I think it was a little bit windy so we had both to adjust a little bit,” Sinner added. “I felt like I was returning very well. He was changing the game very, very good, especially when he was playing with the wind. He is lightning fast, so sometimes you have to go in the same corner again.”
De Minaur was also seeking his 8th career title. This was the first time he’d been beyond the quarters at a Masters level event.
“Jannik is a hell of a player. He’s got some of the hardest ground strokes I’ve probably ever dealt to be honest. All these things I knew coming in. I knew what to expect,” said De Minaur.
“Ultimately, he kind of executed his game plan a little bit better than I was able to do mine.”
With the win, Sinner will vault into the next level of favorites at the bigger events, and seems ready for that next step.
“It’s a good confidence boost, no,” he said. “Especially going into the US Open. It’s going to be tough in Cinci because there’s not so much time to adjust but we will ask for a Wednesday start. Hopefully, I can get the Wednesday start so I have a couple of hits before the match, trying to be ready, yeah, for that tournament and then trying to prepare in the best possible way the US Open.”
