Former Champ Murray Goes Down To Safiullin In Shanghai, Lajovic Defeats Wawrinka
On opening day at the Shanghai Masters, two future Hall of Famers lost in the first round.
Former champion Andy Murray fell to Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-2. The 36-year-old finishes his Asian swing just 1-3 dropping his last three matches.
Safiullin, who is enjoying a breakout season, was broken once while breaking Murray five times in the match.
Murray was just 9/29 on second serve points won and just 1-of-7 on break chances.
Dusan Lajovic sent out Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6(9-7). There were seven breaks in the match. Wawrinka never led.
Mackenzie McDonald got by (France’s Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-3. Zhang Zhizhen rolled 37-year-old Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2. Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-2).
Brandon Nakashima of the United States advanced past Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-1, 7-6(7-3). Thanasi Kokkinakis ousted Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4.
