Carlos Alcaraz came to bloom just as his Spanish hero Rafael Nadal began to fade. The 20-year-old has played just a handful of events with Nadal when both are Grand Slam winners, and of course they won’t be together this week at the Monte Carlo Masters as Nadal has already withdrawn.

“I didn’t see him too much around, we didn’t share too many tournaments,” Alcaraz said. “I really want to you see him around, playing the tournaments but if he’s not here it doesn’t change too much for me.

“But obviously talking as a fan of tennis, it’s a it’s a shame that Rafa is not playing in this tournament.”

Alcaraz still would love the chance to play doubles with Nadal at the Paris Olympics.

“Of course it would be a dream I have hope to to play doubles with him in the Olympic games,” he said. “But is four months from now so everything can can change or can happen so let’s see. For me it would be would be great.”

Alcaraz, who turns 21 next month, could face Djokovic in his Monte Carlo semifinals. He could face Felix Auger Aliassime in his opener.

Alison hodge Says:

It is a shame, but life and tennis go on

Alison hodge Says:

I have no desire to see another round of the vastly overrated Nadal / Djokovic rivalry, everything gets tiresome after a while, it’s time for a new one….

Wog Boy Says:

“… vastly overrated Nadal / Djokovic rivalry…”?!

When the hate towards one player makes you downgrade the player you cheer for.

Arguably the biggest rivalry in the history of tennis (for me the biggest) with 59 matches played and 28 were finals, all masters or above level and you say “vastly overrated Nadal / Djokovic rivalry” wtf?!

skeezer Says:

Old rivalry already talk already. Why live in the past? Fed doesn’t. The new rivalries are upon us. Enjoy.

Alison hodge Says:

Thank you Skeezer well said,,,
.

When a player has a monopoly in a rivalry, it’s only natural their fans want more and more, why wouldn’t they when their favourite holds all the cards….

chrisford1 Says:

1)Who has a monopoly on WHAT rivalry?

2)Is there a new Skeezer rule that dictates that fans of Legends still playing, including one that still ekes out weeks as #1?

3)Alison, when every tennis critic puts Navak-Rafa in the Top 5 rivalries, most now at #1 for closeness in matches, H2H, and blood&guts gladiator duels. It ain’t vastly overrated.
Many, inc. me, think some of the best tennis of the rivalries were Murray-Federer back in the 2007-2016 timespan and Career Novak-Federer for the high regular quality level.

Alison hodge Says:

If you say so….

Alison hodge Says:

Nadal / Federer if you want to go there

Alison hodge Says:

It’s the titles my favourite wins that I care about, not who they play to get them, personally I couldn’t care less which Tom, Dick or Harry they beat, get sick to death of hearing a player’s title is less worthy, or an asterisk should be given when certain players don’t beat other certain players
