Jannik Sinner has already been installed as the betting favorite to win the Monte Carlo Masters this upcoming week, that despite the fact the Italian has 13 career titles with just one on clay. And in 17 finals, just one has come on clay, that being his 2022 win over Carlos Alcaraz in Umag.

Sinner, though, has made strides on his least successful surface, making the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals last year and earlier reaching the quarters at the French Open and Rome.

Sinner was asked about his clay issues during his pre-event presser in Monte Carlo.

“I’m saying struggle because it’s not the the surface where I feel that comfortable in general because I feel more comfortable on hard court, which doesn’t mean that I that I’m not a good player on clay. I played my first Grand Slam quarterfinal on clay it was in Roland Garros. I made quarters in Rome. So let’s see.

“Talking about last year was not my best season on clay, hopefully I can change it this year, but you know I’m confident that I can be a good player also also on clay. It takes time for sure, because I used to practice a lot on clay when I was 14 to 20, but then after most of the tournament they go to hard court tournaments so you play a little bit less. But I’m very excited to be here. I think if you make the clay with a good friendship it can help.”

Like Novak Djokovic said, Sinner is also lowering his expectations for the week.

“It’s gonna be an amazing an amazing tournament. I love to play here. The expectations are are not that for this for this beginning of clay but the goal is to be ready for Roland Garros and then hopefully Olympics.

“We will take this week as a practice week,” he said. “It’s going to be interesting to see.”

The second-seeded Sinner will have a tough draw opener with either Sebastian Korda or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He has won 22 of his 23 matches this year.
