The rain completely washed out all men’s play Friday at the Canadian Open in Montreal. So the top half of that men’s draw will have to play two matches today to get back on schedule.

Jannik Sinner will meet Alejandro Tabilo and then, if he wins, face later in the day either Andrey Rublev or Brandon Nakashima.

The bottom half of play will still see the big showdown between Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune.

Taylor Fritz still has to play Sebastian Korda in the second round and that winner will meet Casper Ruud also later.

Hubert Hurkacz also is looking at two matches, and he’s coming off knee surgery.

It seems every year the Canadian Open is good for one or two big rain outs.

In Toronto, the rains didn’t stay as long but for Coco Gauff she’d probably have wished for more. The American fell meekly to fellow 20-year-old Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-1. Gauff has now failed to make the quarters in her last three events.

“Sometimes I question like whether I should have played or not,” Gauff said, “but at the end of the day I wanted to test myself and see if I would be able to, how I would do being mentally tired a little bit and physically fatigued.

“I said going into the tournament I didn’t have high expectations, but I wish I could have competed better today, even if it resulted in a loss. I don’t think I competed well.”

But the Americans had a monster day and Saturday seeds a whopping five in the last eight. Emma Navarro takes on Taylor Townsend and Jessica Pegula meets Peyton Stearns.

Aryna Sabalenka will take on Amanda Anisimova and Shnaider faces 2023 finalist Samsonova.

Forecast calls for much better weather in both cities today.
