2024 Beijing Day 5: Alcaraz, Gauff, Osaka Headline Middle Sunday In China
After Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev moved into the quarterfinals, Carlos Alcaraz will look to join them in the final eight of the China Open.
Alcaraz will meet Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor Sunday in the second round. Alcaraz has won all three meetings including a straight-set win at the Olympics.
While the men are at a 500 level, the women’s event is a 1000 96-draw. And Sunday will see action from Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Naomi Osaka.
Gauff will face a tough test against British No. 1 Katie Boulter. The two have split their two prior meetings.
US Open finalist Pegula faces No. 32 seed Veronika Kudermetova and former champion Noami Osaka takes on American Katie Volynets.
Saturday saw wins from Sinner in three over Roman Safiullin and Medvedev rolled past Andrian Mannarino.
“A tough match. He’s an incredible player and we always have tough battles,” said Sinner to the ATP. “This was our third encounter, so we know each other a bit. He returns very well, and he was serving well at important moments. So I tried to keep up mentally, which today was very tough.
“Especially on these kinds of days, when maybe you don’t feel at your 100 per cent, to find a way through means so much to me. He’s an incredible player, so I knew I had to raise my level when it counted.”
The women saw top seeds Aryna Sabalenka, Jasmine Paolina, Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva and Qinwen Zheng all advancing.
“I’m having a lot of great memories from the past,” Sabalenka said to the WTA. “I don’t even know how many tournaments I won in China. It’s always great to come back and feel the atmosphere, feel the vibe, knowing that I kind of gain my fan club here.
“It gives me more motivation to go there and compete and bring my best tennis and make sure I stay till the last stages of the tournament, so I can enjoy this atmosphere as much as possible.”
